’What was that?’
The voice echoed in his head. It wasn’t a voice he recognized, but it sounded familiar. But there was a person he had in mind that would know.
’The principal is even weirder than I thought.’
Indeed, there was one person where it would make some sense that they would know about him, the same person Azuriel, the ancient sovereign phoenix, told him about.
In front of Valerian, his next opponent materialized, cutting off his thoughts.
’I will try to somehow talk to him. Maybe if I get rank 1, I can get time with him.’
Being the rank 1 of a year must surely give him the right to have a 1-on-1 talk with the principal, so that became his next goal: be rank 1.
The opponent that appeared in front of Valerian was a girl with long red hair and red eyes that burned like a wildfire, but there were also features that made Valerian perk up.
The girl had red horns and red scales on her body. That, paired with her slitted eyes, made Valerian realize what she was.
’A dragon. From the looks of it, she is a fire dragon.’
There existed dragons on Eldoria, and while they had no clear kingdom or nation, they were regarded as one of the strongest races for their high compatibility with mana.
The dragon girl looked at Valerian with a frown.
"You are a dragon, right? But I have never seen a dragon with white hair and purple eyes. What kind are you anyway?"
’Hmm? There are no dragons with white hair and purple eyes?’
Valerian was slightly confused. Hair and eye color were very important for dragons. Unlike the other races, hair and eye color weren’t something that was individual to a person, but instead directly tied to the sub-race of dragon someone was.
So there was no green-haired fire dragon or red-eyed water dragon.
’White hair and purple eyes must be something special to cosmic dragons.’
It would make sense why someone on Eldoria didn’t know about the cosmic dragons, as they had long left behind their terrestrial counterparts to venture into the great cosmos.
"You’re not going to answer? Then so be it. I guess I have to beat it out of you."
A wicked grin appeared on the girl’s face as she prepared herself to attack Valerian once the round started.
’But shouldn’t my [Primordial Celestial Dragon] bloodline be above her or something?’
The light projection appeared in the air and began to count down.
’Maybe I shouldn’t end this one too quickly. And she seems to be talented. B+ Rank, that’s pretty good.’
For someone that wasn’t Valerian or Arthur, who each had their own reasons for being so strong, or Seraphine, who could be described as the greatest talent native to Eldoria, reaching B+ at 16 was very impressive.
’Now let’s see, how do I do that?’
While the timer was ticking down, Valerian immersed himself into the deepest parts of his soul to reach his unawakened bloodline.
In the beginning, Valerian found it weird that his bloodline, which was awakened before, turned unawakened after the merge of his races.
But after thinking about it for a bit and using the note at the end of his physique as reference, he could deduce that he was simply too young and too weak to hold the full power of his bloodline.
When he grew older and stronger, his physique would mature, and with it the perfect vessel for his bloodline would form. But since he wasn’t there yet, it sealed itself to protect him.
Now Valerian tried to call upon his sleeping bloodline to see if it would have an effect on another dragon.
The timer reached 0, and instead of the thing that had been happening for the past 17 fights, Valerian’s opponent didn’t get enveloped by the protective barrier.
Instead, her body was engulfed by orange and red flames, catapulting her towards the still-standing Valerian.
"You’re just gonna keep your eyes closed?! Then take this, bastard!"
The fire behind her rose higher, forming a tsunami of flames ready to swallow Valerian’s form whole.
Inside her hand, a greatsword made from orange flames with a red core formed. As she swung the sword down, the fire followed behind, racing towards Valerian.
While the sword was mid-swing, Valerian opened his eyes, and they locked with the dragon girl’s.
His radiant cosmic purple met her burning red, and she froze.
Her breath hitched, her heart began to beat wildly, and something inside her screamed at her to bow her head.
’W-what?’
She couldn’t think clearly. The dragon blood inside her veins was boiling, something a fire dragon like her normally wouldn’t mind. But this was a different kind of boiling. Instead of heat, it was the primordial pressure that the cosmic dragons had over the other dragons.
Her mana faltered. The fire that followed behind her like a loyal servant began to retreat on its own, like a scared puppy.
She fell to her knees as breathing became difficult and sweat covered her whole body.
"That’s neat."
Valerian’s relaxed voice echoed across the pocket space. The fire fully retreated, and even the heat backed away, leaving them alone.
"Wh-what i-is hap-happening??"
The dragon girl asked between heavy breaths. With every word, her blood screamed at her to stay quiet and just bow before him.
Valerian walked up to her. The sound of his footsteps felt like the boots of an executioner nearing her to cut off her head.
His steps stopped once he stood directly above her. Her heart was beating even faster than before and was nearing a heart attack.
Her condition became worse by the second, and she wasn’t sure how much longer she could hold under the pressure. But suddenly, the pressure disappeared, and she could breathe again.
"Ahhh... Ahhhh."
She gasped for air as the pressure surrounding her body finally disappeared.
"You are talented."
Valerian’s relaxed voice cut through her panting. She could barely recognize the words he was saying.
"This might come out weird, but do you want to be friends?"
Now everything was spinning inside her head. Even though she could barely think, his voice cut through her gasps like her body itself was telling her that whatever he was saying was more important than her breathing.
After Valerian asked the question, silence took over the dimension, and it became really awkward for Valerian.
’Damn! Why was this so easy with Arthur?! And why isn’t she saying anything? If the silence lasts for 10 more seconds, I have to defeat her just to stop the silence.’
But luckily for Valerian, he didn’t need to spend another second in this weird silence as the dragon girl regained her breath.
"Haaa... Haaa... I don’t know who you are, but... okay, I will be your friend."
’Let’s go! This whole friend thing is easier than I thought!’
Inwardly, Valerian was celebrating like a child, but outwardly he kept his cool and only had a small smile on his face.
"That’s great to hear. My name is Valerian von Astrea, by the way. What’s yours?"
He held out his hand and helped her stand back up.
"I’m Clara Vermillion."
Valerian nodded with a smile.
"Well then, Clara, it’s nice making your acquaintance. But I’m sorry, I have to be rank 1."
"Wha-"
Before she could finish her sentence, her body was enveloped by the barrier, and with Valerian waving in front of her, she was sent away.
The second Clara disappeared, the dimension around Valerian began to disintegrate, revealing the colosseum outside.
’That must have been the last fight from the block phase. Now it’s time for the semifinals.’
If Valerian had to describe the colosseum outside with one word, it would be: loud. The other students were screaming their lungs out. And there were even mana missiles flying into the air; once they reached high into the sky, they exploded into a beautiful display of colors.
"Everyone! The block phase has ended, and we have our semifinalists! Everyone, make some noise for them!"
Against common sense, the stadium got even louder as Selene hyped them up.
’God, I hate this noise.’
Valerian’s ears had gotten very sensitive after gaining his physique, so such a loud place was the last thing he wanted to be in right now. But unfortunately, it was the only way he could get to the principal, so he had to power through this eardrum-bursting noise.
"The contestants that reached the semifinals are: Lucian Frost!"
A tall boy with short light blue hair and clear blue eyes scoffed at the cheers from the others, his handsome face not moving a muscle.
"The underdog, Arthur von Pendragon!"
The cheers got even louder than the ones Lucian got, as Arthur’s strength and fights that didn’t end instantly made him very popular with the older classmates. Unlike Valerian, Arthur didn’t just one-shot his opponents, but instead played with them to show his superiority.
"The elven prodigy, Seraphine Luna Verdantia!"
The cheers erupted once again to celebrate Seraphine. But she didn’t even bat an eye at them, because she was glued to the figure of the last person that reached the semifinals.
"And the last one, the one that finished his fights faster than anyone in the history of the academy! Valerian von Astrea!!"
The viewers cheered, but they weren’t as enthusiastic as they were with the others. Not because they didn’t like him or anything, but because the last fight was still fresh in their minds.
The way his last opponent, a dragon, just crumbled in front of his feet like a lawn chair. They didn’t feel awe or excitement; they felt fear.
But Valerian didn’t care, as his eyes were focused high above the clouds, to a place no other student could see.
His gaze penetrated straight through the spatial distortion that kept the lounge hidden and locked with golden eyes that had a rotating silver string.
The owner of these eyes looked back at Valerian with a wide grin.
