The second the fight started, pale blue flames gathered along Lucian’s spear, crawling up the shaft and converging at the tip of the blade.
The fire gathered at a small point in front of the spear; the air around it turned even colder, and the dust froze in the air.
Enhancing his body with mana, he thrust his spear forward, sending a beam of freezing blue flames at Valerian.
The pale blue fire froze everything in its path as spikes of ice appeared on the edge of the tightly bundled frostfire beam.
Valerian saw the fire approaching, but he didn’t move away. Instead, he raised his right hand.
The ice from [Absolute Zero] formed a layer of ice around his hand, and in front of him a massive wall of clear blue ice appeared in the path of the frostfire.
The two ice attacks met in a clash of pure ice and freezing flames. The surrounding arena turned into a frigid tundra as the frostfire dispersed into the surroundings.
Seeing that his opening attack was blocked by the ice wall, a frown appeared on Lucian’s face, but he didn’t offer Valerian any words and readied his spear again.
He swung his ice spear in a wide arc as the pale blue fire covered the tip. Following the path of the spear, a wave of Frostfire left the blade and hurled towards Valerian.
From the ground in front of Valerian, ice began to emerge and formed a shield, completely blocking the fire again.
After the frostfire died down, the ice wall collapsed, and Valerian walked through the falling shards of the wall; yet before they could hit him, they disappeared and turned back into mana.
Valerian walked forward with a relaxed stride; the frost on his hands gently fell to the ground, creating a small patch of ice.
He raised his right hand, and with a casual snap of his fingers, dozens of icicles appeared behind him. Each was 2 meters long and half a meter thick, rotating at high speeds.
All of their tips were aimed at Lucian.
But Lucian didn’t stand still; he channeled his mana through his limbs, enhancing them to their breaking point. He knew that he was weaker, but that didn’t mean that he wouldn’t fight.
With his limbs enhanced by his mana, he kicked off the ground at the same time the icicles hovering around Valerian were fired.
They were fast, so fast that Lucian, who wasn’t close to breaking through yet, thought there was no way he would be able to dodge them.
He weaved through the bombardment of ice with light feet. The pale blue flame burned around him like a suit of armor.
Valerian watched as Lucian dodged all the icicles he threw at him, and to Valerian’s surprise, he was actually getting faster with each step.
Valerian had a light smile on his face as he stomped his foot on the stone floor. From the place his foot impacted, the ground turned into ice, moving rapidly towards Lucian.
When it was almost on him, ice spikes emerged from the frozen ground and aimed directly for his heart.
As the spikes neared his heart, the blue fire around his feet began to burn brighter, and an ice pillar emerged from the ground. Kicking off the pillar, Lucian avoided the spikes and landed a few meters to the side.
But Valerian didn’t stop; he cast one ice spell after the other: ice spikes, ice lances, and incredibly fast ice swords.
Lucian pushed his mana core and body to the absolute limit to avoid as many of the attacks as he could.
The crowd was speechless; Lucian Frost was a name that many of them knew. He was, after all, the heir to the strongest duke of one of the most powerful nations.
The frostflame was something that was known across Eldoria as the pinnacle of ice magic. But now they saw this prodigy of cold flame getting pushed back by the same element his family had dominion over.
"What a turn! That Valerian von Astrea would be more skilled in ice magic than Lucian Frost was not something I had expected!"
Serene was commentating on the fight, and all of the viewers couldn’t agree more. They had seen how Valerian took out all his opponents without moving a muscle, and the one time he did move, they didn’t even know how he brought the dragon to her knees.
And now, faced with the sight of Lucian losing so badly in a contest of ice, it was a sobering sight.
A large explosion of ice brought everyone’s attention back into the ring.
Inside, Valerian continued to throw all kinds of ice spells at Lucian, who desperately tried to dodge and close the distance.
Lucian was an excellent spearman, and with his Frostfire he was very confident in his close-range prowess. Seeing as Valerian rather stayed back to throw spells, Lucian thought that he must be more on the caster side and not a particularly strong close-range fighter.
But Valerian had absolute control over the battlefield; he froze the ground under Lucian, and he created ice spikes out of chunks of ice that fell after an ice wall was destroyed.
Injuries began to appear on Lucian’s body; it wasn’t anything life-threatening, but the cuts from the ice shards, the bruises when an ice hammer hit him in the chest, and many more began to pile up on his body.
His once pristine white and light blue robes were shredded and soaked in his blood, but he didn’t give up. Whenever he was thrown to the side, he stood back up. Whenever he received another injury, he would freeze the wound so it wouldn’t bleed and continue to fight.
And he could feel it; deep inside his body, his mana core was humming with power. He felt himself clearly on the edge of breaking through.
’Just a bit more...’
Lucian gritted his teeth and locked onto Valerian’s figure at the end of the stadium.
Hands by the side of his body, a relaxed smile on his face, and the element that Lucian thought belonged to him hugged his figure.
’If I can’t win... I will at least injure you, you bastard.’
Not wanting to go down without a fight, Lucian stood back up and flooded his legs with his remaining mana.
’One good attack, just one...’
The crystal-like spear in his hands was humming in recognition as his mana flowed into it. The familiar pale blue fire covered his body from head to toe and crawled up the shaft of the spear.
To others, being covered in frostfire would be unbearable, as the cold from it wasn’t ordinary. But to Lucian, someone who had the pure blood of the founder of the Frost clan and creator of the frostfire, it felt comforting. Like the coldness of the fire was hugging him and telling him it would always be there.
And so, covered in the familiar coldness, he charged forward.
Valerian felt the huge amount of mana that was compressed inside these flames, and the determined look inside Lucian’s clear blue eyes shone like the polar lights.
’You want to end this with one attack... alright.’
Acknowledging the unwavering determination and will to fight, Valerian too prepared himself for this last clash.
[Absolute Zero] formed an armor around his body; the clear blue ice was almost transparent, but the density was beyond anything normal ice could muster.
A spear that resembled the crystal spear Lucian had formed in his hand, but even though it was formed through his superior affinity, the spear he had looked of lesser quality than the one Lucian had.
Valerian lowered his body, and with mana pumping through his body, he kicked off the ground, shattering the stone floor and all the ice that converged around him.
Behind him, a trail of ice marked the ground, and ice crept up on his spear.
The fire around Lucian burned even brighter. He pushed more mana into it than he ever had, pushed it further than he thought possible. All to injure Valerian on this single exchange.
Their bodies closed in on each other, the pale blue fire on one side and the clear blue ice on the other.
Right as the impact was about to happen, the wall that had blocked Lucian for the last months broke down. Mana began to flush through his veins as the newfound power increased his strength rapidly.
He didn’t waste a single second and poured all this new and improved mana into the fire around him to gain an edge.
Valerian felt the spike in mana and realized instantly that Lucian broke through to A- Rank. But he didn’t go easy on him, or let him bask in the euphoria of his new rank.
Their attacks collided, and a massive explosion of frostfire and ice swallowed the fighting grounds.
The temperature in the colosseum dropped drastically. The students watching the fight could see their breath and feel chills crawl up their spines.
The arena was swallowed by the cold, and a large cloud of crushed ice and snow covered their sight.
Everyone was sitting at the edge of their seats, desperately wanting to know how the match ended.
The cloud began to settle, and a massive wave of ice covered a large amount of the arena. And standing like an ant in front of the ice wall, with the spear made from ice, was the uninjured Valerian.
