Valerian left the principal’s office with even more questions than he had before, but he couldn’t exactly force Sylas to reveal more. So he had to begrudgingly leave.
As he exited the room, he was met with a large hallway with ceilings so high he couldn’t see an end; after seeing the window in the office, he wasn’t sure if the ceiling had an end in the first place.
Ignoring the endless ceiling, he walked down the hallway. Unlike the simple office, this hallway was decorated with all kinds of paintings, weapons, and even some golden armor pieces on armor stands.
It was the complete opposite of the minimalistic office the strongest person had, almost like the office existed in an entirely different space than the rest of the academy.
As he walked along the corridor, a very important thought reached Valerian’s brain, and slight panic settled in.
’Where exactly are the dorms?’
He had currently no idea where he was, as the teleportation gate had taken him directly into the office. To make matters worse, the entire academy was built using spatial distortions so that there was enough space for the millions of students.
Unfortunately, these spatial distortions messed with his spatial awareness, making it impossible to sense anything past them.
So in short, he was lost.
’Wonderful. First that guy tells me just how much I suck for hours, and then I get lost. And it’s just the first day...’
As Valerian walked down the corridor, he could see a counter in the distance. Not wanting to walk any further, space folded around him and brought his body directly in front of the woman sitting behind the counter.
But when his body reached its destination, a burning pain shot through him. The pain followed the same pathway his mana took to initiate the teleport. Valerian clutched his chest in pain, as a theory about the cause already took shape in his mind.
’I strained my soul too much with the spatial severance. Now it hurts like shit when I manipulate space.’
The woman behind the counter looked at the clearly pained Valerian with a concerned expression.
"Are you alright? Do you want me to call someone to take you to the medical wing?"
Valerian looked up at the woman and just shook his head with a strained expression.
"I’m fine. Can you please tell me how I can reach the dorms?"
Not fully convinced, the woman looked at him for a moment before sighing and pointing down one of the hallways to her side.
"If you take the first right, you will reach the teleportation chamber. Just tell the person operating the gate your destination, and they will send you there."
Nodding in acknowledgment, Valerian moved away from the counter and in the direction the woman had pointed.
When he reached the teleportation chamber, he told one of the operators that he wanted to go to the first-year dorms, and a portal quickly opened.
Not wanting to waste more time, Valerian entered the portal quickly. After a short transition, he left the building the office was in and stood outside.
In front of him were six ginormous towers, divided into two groups of three.
Students were walking into the towers to reach their rooms. He noticed that only female students were walking to the three towers on the right, and only male students to the ones on the left.
He just followed the other male students toward the left towers; over the entrance to each tower was a number.
Without hesitation, he entered the tower that had the number 1 on it for the first-years. The inside of the tower was extremely luxurious, with marble floors and shining ornaments. At the end of the lobby was a long counter with twenty workers.
In front of each worker was a long line of new students. When Valerian saw the long line, clear annoyance built up in him. He was extremely exhausted, and even more irritated by the half-answers the principal had given him.
So waiting in line for an hour just to get to his room was the last thing he wanted to do right now, and he decided to take a more drastic approach.
Picking the line that had the least amount of students, he walked right past them and headed directly for the front.
The students standing in line wanted to object to him cutting in, but when they saw who it was, they didn’t dare utter any complaint, remembering the finale of the tournament.
When he finally reached the front, a tall elf with dark-grey-colored skin and black hair was talking to the receptionist.
Valerian walked up to him and pulled him away by the back collar of the elf’s shirt.
The dark elf was shocked as he was suddenly dragged away from the reception. He tried to break the hold on his shirt, but even exhausted, Valerian’s physical strength was too much for him, and he couldn’t free himself.
Valerian let go of the student and walked up to the counter. The receptionist was a middle-aged man with visible wrinkles, and even though he was slightly shocked at what had just happened, he didn’t let it break his professionalism.
"Valerian von Astrea. I want to know where my room is."
The man typed on a keyboard made out of light mana. After a short moment, a gold ring appeared on the counter; it had a silver line running through it, following the design philosophy of everything else in the academy.
"With this ring, you can enter your room through the teleportation gate in the back. It will take you directly there. Only you and people you personally grant permission to can enter your room. To give them permission, you and the other person have to channel your mana into the ring to allow their mana signature to be registered."
Valerian put the ring on his right middle finger and turned away. Normally he would be more interested in the ring and the whole mechanism behind it, but not now and not today—he just wanted to lay down.
As he walked away from the counter, the dark elf he had pulled aside grabbed his shoulder in anger.
"Who do you think you are, just pushing me away?!"
The boy was clearly furious with Valerian, but unfortunately for him, Valerian’s patience was already paper-thin.
He broke the boy’s hold on his shoulder effortlessly as a dark dot formed beneath the student. The gravity around that point increased suddenly, and the boy was pulled to the ground, hitting the marble with his face.
The boy writhed in pain as he tried to stand up, but the gravity around him didn’t decrease, keeping him pinned to the floor. Valerian ignored him and the stares of the students around him as he walked toward the gate the receptionist had pointed him to.
When he reached the gate, he walked through it, and the ring on his finger lit up as it took him to his room.
The space he arrived in was, at first glance, massive. He was currently standing in what looked like a living room, and even this living room was bigger than his bedroom back at the castle.
He sent out his spatial perception to map out his dorm. While his senses couldn’t reach beyond the suite due to the spatial distortion, he could clearly feel the scale of the place he would be living in for the next three years.
It was utterly insane: it had a dozen rooms, each with a large bed that could easily sleep three people, just as many bathrooms, and even a swimming pool. It was far more space than a single person could ever need.
Among these bedrooms, he located the largest one. Not wasting any more time, he made his way through the hallway and reached his quarters.
It was the same size as the living room, with a bed that was ten meters wide. It had its own sofa and fireplace, as well as a kitchenette off to the side and a door leading to an en-suite bathroom.
On the massive bed rested a single spatial ring.
Valerian walked up to the ring, slipped it on, and probed what was stored inside. Within the space were only two items: his uniform and a book.
As the apex of the first-years, he had a unique uniform that set him apart from the rest. The color palette was even tailored to his own physical features and preferences.
Deciding to examine the uniform later, he pulled out the book. A neat, black volume materialized in his hand, and on the cover, Valerian read:
"Rules of the Starlight Academy."
’Haaa, just a rulebook. First, I need a bath.’
Valerian walked into the bathroom attached to his bedroom. Like everything else, it was absurdly large, featuring an expansive sunken bathtub set into the floor and a massive walk-in shower.
He approached the tub and twisted the knob, letting hot water rush out. The basin filled remarkably fast, quickly turning into a steaming pool of water.
Sending a faint pulse of mana to Twilight, Valerian’s clothes vanished, leaving him standing bare in his new bathroom.
On the outside, his physique was the epitome of lean perfection, devoid of wasted bulk while carrying dense, tightly coiled muscle across his frame. His long, silver-white hair cascaded loosely down his back as he lowered himself into the steaming water.
Making himself comfortable and feeling the heat soothe some of the deep exhaustion weighing on his soul, Valerian picked up the academy’s rulebook and began to read.
