Ascension of the Primalist [A Tamer Class, LitRPG]
B3 - Chapter 34: RetreatSeth cast Intermediate Identify on one of each type of beast.
Seth's gaze swept over the contracted beasts. How the hell do they have so many of them? And why didn't they use any before?!
Morsh had possesed one, but this was different. Were they saving them for some element of surprise?
Henry wasted no time calling out orders, and his voice boomed over the thundering sound of the charging beasts. "Load the cannons! Prepare to retreat through the routes if they break the line!"
Around Seth and the squad leader, the stronghold became a frantic hive of movement. Elementalists gathered aether in their palms to summon their spells while archers nocked arrows, their eyes focused on the approaching stampede.
Eddin reached for his pouch, but he froze as he realized the distortion field rendered the artifact useless. He glanced back at Seth with a grim expression. "Move back and get ready to guide the men through the escape routes!"
Ahead, Selena and the remaining Rogues scrambled past the sharpened pikes of the cheval-de-frise. The moment they cleared the kill zone, Henry roared, "Fire!"
Two thunderous bangs erupted from the stronghold's artillery. The shells hissed through the air, searing the foliage with trails of aether while being followed by a coordinated volley of arrows, fireballs, and lightning bolts. The distortion field vanished for a fraction of a second, and almost simultaneously a shimmering barrier manifested in front of the beast horde to meet the barrage.
Shit. Seth's hand moved to his Endless Pouch, yet before he could grab anything, the distortion field rippled over all of them once more.
Ahead, the cannon shells exploded against the translucent wall, along with the incoming spells, causing the barrier to groan under the force before shattering into thousands of aetheric fragments.
"Again!" Henry shouted.
The beasts closed the distance with terrifying speed, their charge barely slowed by the first volley. Seconds later, the cannons roared again, the deafening blasts shaking the entire stronghold.
This time, Seth was ready.
The instant the aether around the battlefield stopped vibrating—before the Empire could deploy another barrier scroll—he reached into his Endless Pouch and tore out Morsh's Distortion Rod. Without wasting any time, he flooded it with aether.
A counter-field rippled outward from his position, twisting the air across the battlefield. The Empire's next protective wall never had the chance to form; the cannonballs struck true.
Explosions tore through the charging front line. One of the rhinos collapsed, half its armored skull blown apart, while two of the rock-plated bears were hurled sideways in sprays of shattered stone and blood. Several soldiers disappeared beneath the blasts as well, and their formation wavered.
The charge slowed. Fear flickered across imperial faces.
Then a voice thundered from the rear:
"KEEP MOVING!"
The hesitation vanished.
The surviving beasts slammed into the cheval-de-frise with overwhelming force. Wooden stakes snapped like brittle branches beneath the rhinos and bears, opening gaps in the defenses as Kastal's first line met them with braced shields and desperate spear thrusts. Panthers and tigers leapt through the chaos and crashed directly into the soldiers behind the barricades.
"Get your Instant-Spell scrolls ready!" Seth shouted over the roar of battle. "And be prepared to trigger your Protecting Belts!"
Henry glanced back at Seth before refocusing on the massive Mountain-Bear in front of him, so he could engage the beast alongside another soldier.
"Now!" Seth shouted.
He deactivated the Distortion Rod, and the suppression lifted. Aether flared white and blue across the stronghold as soldiers activated their belts and tore open Instant-Spell scrolls. A chaotic storm of flame, ice, lightning, and raw aetheric blasts crashed into the front line of the beast horde. Several creatures were killed instantly, their bodies torn apart or hurled backward, and the assault faltered.

The imperial soldiers behind them hesitated, caught off guard by the perfectly timed counterattack. A few immediately reached for their own belts and defensive scrolls, trying to shield the advance—yet Seth was faster.
He reactivated the Distortion Rod, sending the vibrating wave rippling outward once more. The Empire's defensive artifacts sputtered and died before they could activate.
"Hell yeah!" a nearby soldier yelled.
For a brief moment, Seth's intervention gave the Kastal line room to breathe. The unexpected barrage had staggered the first wave and disrupted the Empire's momentum.
Of course, that respite didn't last.
Imperial soldiers surged through the chaos, weaving between the wounded and dying beasts with terrifying speed. Polished armor flashed beneath the canopy as they crashed into Kastal defenders. Their higher Ranks and better gear quickly gave them back the upper hand.
The stronghold turned into chaos.
Seth watched a Kastal spearman drive his weapon through an Imperial soldier's chest—only for a Mountain Bear to crash into him a heartbeat later and crush the man into the blood-soaked earth. Screams and steel rang through the place while the smell of iron thickened the air.
Henry fought like a possessed man. He deflected the horn of a charging rhino with his two-handed blade, twisted aside, then cut down the enemy soldier advancing beside the beast in one fluid motion. Nearby, Eddin roared as he unleashed a relentless flurry of spear strikes, holding back an entire cluster of swordsmen while Selena darted through them like a shadow, her new daggers flashing in lethal arcs as she exploited every weakness in the enemy formation.
At the rear, Seth remained beside the two Priests as they worked frantically to stabilize the wounded dragged from the front lines. The arcane cannons thundered again and again, their blasts shaking the barricades—yet even that overwhelming firepower wasn't enough to stop the Empire's advance.
'Should I come out?' Colossus asked through Link, unease shaking through his voice.
Seth hesitated. If he summoned the scorpion now, the Empire could activate their own distortion field and trap Colossus outside the necklace if they were forced to flee.
Before he could make a decision, Henry’s voice sounded across the battlefield:
“Retreat! Fall back to the escape routes!”
Seth’s head snapped toward the squad leader. He immediately deactivated the Distortion Rod and tore two Shrinking Scrolls from his Endless Pouch. Pouring a sharp burst of aether into the parchments, he activated them both. The massive Arcane Cannons shrank instantly, allowing two nearby soldiers to grab them and shove them into their own pouches.
But before Seth could reactivate the rod, the Empire beat him to it. A nauseating field rippled across the stronghold from somewhere within the forest.
"Shit," Seth muttered. Not wasting time on something he couldn't control, he waved the nearby soldiers from Kastal's squad toward the path leading deeper in the woods.
"This way! Follow me!"
Seth moved with sharp focus, directing the retreating soldiers through the chaos.
“Stay left of the tall grass!” he shouted, guiding them past the traps and hidden kill zones he had helped prepare earlier. Panicked allies rushed by him, stumbling through churned mud while imperial soldiers' screams echoed from behind the collapsing barricades.
Relief loosened the tension in Seth’s chest when Henry, Eddin, and Selena finally burst through the haze of smoke and flame. All three were stained with soot and blood, armor cracked and torn—but they were alive.
“Seth, move!” Henry roared. He glanced frantically toward the forest behind them. “Run to the next stronghold! We’ll cover the retreat!”
Seth’s eyes widened as he looked past Henry’s shoulder; a massive volley of elemental spells was tearing from between the trees toward them. Fireballs, jagged spears of ice, arcs of compressed force. Enough power to wipe out the squad leader, Eddin, and Selena.
Instinct took over.
Seth activated Shadow Step and his body dissolved into gray mist before reforming directly in the center of the group. Upon arrival, he switched the bond of Share from Shadow Step to Sandstorm Dome.
Golden winds erupted outward.
The barrier formed in a heartbeat—a swirling hemisphere of grit that met the Empire's incoming barrage and made the spells explode in a deafening explosion of aether. Fire splashed across the dome and ice shattered into glittering fragments, while shockwaves blasted dirt and ash into the air hard enough to blind everyone nearby.
The dome groaned violently under the pressure and then shattered.
Golden sands burst outward and vanished into the smoke. Seth remained standing at the center of the clearing, boots dug into the ruined earth as dust slowly settled around him. He looked at Henry, Selena, and Eddin, his face set in a hard, uncompromising line.
“Get to the escape route with the others,” he ordered. “Go.”
“No, Seth—” Henry started as he reached toward Seth.
“I’ll be fine!” Seth snapped, interrupting him. “Just go!”
The three exchanged a glance before spinning on their heels to sprint toward safety.
Seth turned to face the encroaching tide of imperial soldiers and the snarling beasts leading the charge.
'Cast Desert Aegis on me,' he said to Colossus through the Link.
'I can't let you fight them alone!' the scorpion argued, his voice vibrating through the bond. 'You're injured!'
'Trust me, buddy, I'll be alright.' Seth's eyes locked onto the center of the enemy formation. 'I'll just grab their attention.'
Colossus complied and funneled a dense wave of aether into the protective spell as he had done when he had still been inside his egg. Seth took a deep breath and turned his focus inward on his Legacy's core. The ancient power inside rushed outward, overwhelming him with an urge to run and flee. The thing's instinct didn't believe he could face so many beasts and Wielders—that staying here meant death.
Seth smiled and looked at the soldiers charging toward him.
It was time to stop letting himself be dictated by that thing.
He grasped the mysterious, chained energy linked to his core—the same one that had helped him improve his spells—and bent its flow, feeding it directly into his muscles. The primal instinct to survive twisted into something colder. More dominant.
Every beast and imperial soldier rushing toward him became an affront to his presence; they were mere insects daring to step into territory that belonged to him.
Aether flooded the grooves of Huntbound Rush. Seth forced the spell far beyond its intended limits, driving power through his body until his muscles felt like they were on the verge of tearing apart. They could now sustain the full intent of his hunt.
"Kill him!" someone shouted from the Imperial front line.
Seth dashed forward in a blur and wove through a lethal volley of arrows and elemental spells. Flame spears and rock shards hissed past his head. Vines burst from the forest floor, twisting upward to snare his ankles, but Seth caught the subtle stir in the earth before they fully emerged and easily leapt over the immobilizing spell.
The battlefield felt like his domain. Time seemed to slow as he read every movement, every attack, before it happened. A panther pounced from the brush on the left, so Seth pivoted, casting Dusk Scythes along his good arm. The shadow blade flashed once and carved through the beast’s neck, killing it before it even hit the ground.
The sudden motion sent surprisingly little pain through his injured shoulder, the arm of which was still strapped tightly against his abdomen.
Shouts erupted from the imperial ranks as Seth tore through the vanguard, dancing between attacks and cutting down anything reckless enough to approach him. Once he felt that Kastal soldiers had gained enough distance from the fight, he unleashed Night Veil.
The dark fog spread outward and swallowed the nearby woods.
"Use a Wind Blast scroll!" an officer roared.
Seth smiled and dismissed Dusk Scythes.
The moment the Empire’s distortion field vanished, he plunged his hand into his pouch and ripped out two bombs. With a sharp flick of his wrist, he tossed them into the center of the confused imperial formation before immediately activating his own Distortion Rod.
Yet one of the soldiers had reacted just in time.
An Instant-Spell scroll ignited in a burst of light, and a violent gust of wind tore through the battlefield. The dark fog of Night Veil was ripped apart in less than a second.
One of the soldiers spotted the metal orbs rolling at their boots. His eyes widened in horror.
“Bombs!” he screamed.
Too late.
The explosions detonated almost concurrently. Fire and force erupted outward, tearing through the formation and hurling soldiers into the air. Bodies slammed into trees while others crashed into the churned mud.
Seth glanced once more toward the forest path. Henry, Eddin, and Selena were already gone from sight.
Good, he thought.
Without waiting any longer, Seth spun and dashed deeper into the forest, lingering aether from Huntbound Rush still feeding his legs.
A stray arrow struck him between the shoulder blades, but the combination of his high Toughness, Desert Aegis, and Morsh’s armor provided a staggering defense. Wouldn't be surprised if it only left a scratch.
“Groups one through three, hunt down that Primalist!” some roared behind. “Everyone else, go after the others!”
Seth didn't look back. He could only hope that Henry and the rest of the squad could handle the rest with ambushes. He had won them some time to prepare and had even drawn some of the heat.
It was the best he could do for now.
