Lian’s jaw tightened. He had not agreed to this. He had wanted to observe, gather information, and leave. Being forced into a public fight — even in an underground arena — carried risks. Someone might recognize him from the bounty notice. Someone might report the fight.
But Lirien’s logic was sound. And she had already completed the registration.
Before he could argue further, the current match ended. The holographic display above the pit shifted.
Next Match: Challenger vs. Vornak the Ironfist
A name appeared beside the challenger slot — a temporary alias Lirien had used. The odds displayed immediately. The local favorite, a heavily built Korrak with reinforced bone plating and a reputation for crushing opponents, was heavily favored.
Lian exhaled slowly.
“Fine,” he said. “But this is the only one.”
Lirien did not answer. She simply watched him with those calm violet eyes.
The barriers around the pit flared to life as Lian stepped onto the fighting floor.
The crowd’s noise washed over him — shouts, laughter, the clink of betting tokens. Vornak the Ironfist was already waiting on the opposite side. The Korrak was tall and broad, his green scales thick and scarred, his fists wrapped in heavy kinetic gauntlets. He grinned, showing sharp teeth.
“Another soft-skinned challenger,” Vornak rumbled. “Try not to die too quickly.”
Lian said nothing. He dropped into a ready stance, bare-handed as Lirien had instructed him to train. The black liquid stirred faintly inside him, cold and responsive, but he did not call on it yet. This fight was about foundation. About surviving without relying on shortcuts.
The signal flared.
Vornak charged immediately, closing the distance with surprising speed for his size. A heavy fist swung toward Lian’s head. Lian barely managed to slip aside, the wind of the punch brushing his cheek. He countered with a sharp strike to the Korrak’s ribs, but the thick scales absorbed most of the impact.
The fight was brutal from the start.
Vornak pressed hard, using his superior strength and reach to keep Lian on the defensive. Each punch carried enough force to shatter bone. Lian’s earlier training with the representative had prepared him for overwhelming pressure, but this was different. This opponent was alive. Unpredictable. The Korrak adapted, feinted, and punished every small mistake.
A glancing blow caught Lian across the shoulder, sending pain lancing down his arm. Another strike slipped past his guard and slammed into his side. He tasted blood. His breathing grew ragged. The crowd roared with every successful hit Vornak landed.
Lian’s vision narrowed.
He stopped trying to match strength with strength. Instead, he focused on the lessons Lirien had forced into him through repeated death — timing, positioning, the smallest openings. When Vornak overextended on a heavy downward strike, Lian stepped inside the guard and drove his fist into the soft joint beneath the Korrak’s arm. The impact landed cleanly. Vornak grunted, his rhythm breaking for the first time.
Lian did not waste the opening.
He pressed forward with a series of precise, controlled strikes, targeting joints and exposed gaps in the scales. The black liquid stirred more strongly now, reinforcing his bones and muscles just enough to keep him standing. Vornak’s attacks grew heavier, more desperate. One final exchange left both of them bloodied and breathing hard.
Then Lian found the gap.
A sharp, upward strike to the throat.
Vornak staggered. The kinetic gauntlets slipped from his hands. He dropped to one knee, then collapsed fully as the barriers registered the knockout.
Silence held for a moment.
Then the arena erupted.
Lian stood in the center of the pit, chest heaving, blood dripping from a cut above his eye. His body ached in a dozen places. But he was still standing.
He had won.
Narrowly.
Back in the upper walkway, Lirien waited for him with the same calm expression.
“You survived,” she said. “That is enough for now.”
Lian wiped blood from his face with the back of his hand. Elara looked relieved but still tense.
Lirien continued, “We will stay. You will continue fighting in this arena. Each match will force your foundation to adapt under real pressure. When you can win cleanly against opponents at your level, we will move on.”
Lian stared at her for a long moment. Part of him wanted to refuse. Another part — the colder, more practical part — recognized the value in her decision.
He gave a single nod.
“Fine,” he said. “We stay.”
The underground arena had become their new training ground.
And the real work was only beginning.
