The opponent was stronger than the previous ones.
Lian knew it the moment the man stepped onto the fighting floor. He was human, tall and lean, with short black hair and cold gray eyes. No heavy augs. No flashy weapons. Just a simple pair of reinforced gauntlets and a calm, measured stance that spoke of real combat experience. The holographic display listed him as a late Core Condensation cultivator with a record of victories in the outer rim conflicts. The odds were against Lian.
The barriers flared to life.
The signal came.
The man moved first.
He was fast — faster than anyone Lian had faced in the arena so far. A straight punch snapped toward Lian’s head with clean, efficient power. Lian barely managed to slip aside, the wind of the strike brushing his cheek. He countered immediately, driving a fist toward the man’s ribs, but his opponent twisted and deflected the blow with a sharp forearm. The impact sent a jolt up Lian’s arm.
The fight settled into a brutal rhythm.
The man did not waste movement. Every strike was precise, every step calculated. He tested Lian’s guard, probed for openings, and punished every small mistake. Lian’s earlier matches had been chaotic and physical. This one was different. It was controlled. Methodical. The man fought like someone who had survived real battlefields, not just arena spectacles.
Lian’s foundation held at first. The black liquid reinforced his bones and muscles, letting him absorb impacts that would have broken him weeks earlier. He landed a solid counter to the man’s shoulder, forcing a half-step back. For a brief moment, hope flickered.
Then the tide turned.
The man adjusted. His next combination was faster, sharper. A low kick swept Lian’s lead leg, disrupting his balance. A follow-up elbow slammed into his ribs with bone-jarring force. Lian staggered. Before he could recover, a heavy gauntleted fist crashed into his side. Something inside him gave way with a sickening crack.
Pain exploded through his torso.
He tried to create distance, but the man pressed forward without mercy. Another strike slipped past Lian’s guard and slammed into his already damaged ribs. The air left his lungs in a harsh gasp. His vision blurred at the edges. The black liquid surged in response, trying to stabilize the injury, but the damage was already done.
Lian’s movements slowed.
The man saw it.
A precise, devastating punch drove into Lian’s solar plexus. The force lifted him off his feet and sent him crashing to the reinforced floor. He rolled, trying to rise, but a boot came down hard on his chest, pinning him. The pressure was crushing. Ribs ground together. Blood filled his mouth.
The barrier system registered the critical injury.
The match ended.
The crowd’s noise washed over him in a distant roar as medical drones moved in. Lian lay on the floor, staring up at the dim red lights of the arena ceiling. His breathing was shallow and wet. Every inhale sent fresh waves of pain through his broken ribs. The taste of blood was thick on his tongue.
He had lost.
Lirien was waiting when the medical staff finished the emergency stabilization.
Lian sat on the edge of a recovery bench in the private side chamber, his torso wrapped in temporary binding gel. The worst of the internal damage had been sealed, but the pain remained sharp and constant. Elara stood nearby, her expression tight with worry. She had watched the entire match from the upper walkway.
“You pushed too hard,” Elara said quietly.
Lian did not look at her. “I know.”
Lirien stepped closer, her small face calm as always.
“The opponent’s combat experience was significantly higher than yours,” she said. “Your foundation has improved, but it is still incomplete. Against someone who has survived real war, the gap remains clear. This loss is useful. It shows exactly where you are weak.”
Lian’s jaw tightened. The shame of the defeat sat heavy in his chest, mixing with the physical pain. He had grown stronger in the arena. He had won matches that would have been impossible a month earlier. But the moment he faced a truly experienced fighter, he had been broken.
“We continue,” Lirien said. “When your injuries stabilize, you will fight again. Each loss will force adaptation. Each victory will reinforce the foundation. This is the process.”
Lian closed his eyes for a moment, breathing carefully through the pain.
He nodded once.
The underground arena had given him progress.
