Night on Veythara’s Grave passed without rest.
Even inside Ryzek’s reinforced shelter, the planet’s pressure never fully released its grip. Lian circulated his Qi in the tighter, denser loops he had learned, letting the black liquid settle into a slow supporting rhythm. Elara sat nearby with her eyes closed, lightning occasionally flickering across her fingertips as she stabilized her Peak Core Condensation foundation under the constant drain. Neither of them slept deeply. The knowledge of what waited at first light kept both of them sharp.
Ryzek’s attendants moved quietly through the shelter in the pre-dawn hours, checking equipment and sealing ration packs. The Veyrani cultivator himself stood near the entrance for a long time, four amber eyes fixed on the dark canyon beyond the barrier formations. Whatever thoughts occupied him, he kept them private.
When the blood-colored sky began to lighten, Ryzek turned.
“It is time.”
They left the shelter in a tight group. Ryzek took the lead, two of his attendants flanking the sides, while Lian and Elara followed close behind. Flight was used sparingly. The dense atmosphere made prolonged airborne movement costly, and the open sky left them too exposed to aerial predators and energy storms. Instead they moved in controlled bursts — short flights between ridges, rapid ground coverage through narrower cuts, and constant scanning of the terrain ahead.
The landscape of Veythara’s Grave did not grow kinder with familiarity.
Jagged black spires rose like broken teeth. Deep fissures glowed faintly with unstable energy far below. The wind carried the ever-present grit and the occasional distant roar of something large moving through the mountain ranges. Twice the group was forced to change course when Ryzek detected the residual signatures of Phase Stalkers. Once they waited in complete silence beneath an overhang while a pack of black-plated ravagers passed along a parallel ridge, their heavy limbs cracking stone with every step.
Lian’s perception remained stretched. The black liquid inside him stayed close to the surface, ready to form a blade at the first sign of ambush. Elara’s thunder blade rested in her grip, small arcs of lightning occasionally jumping along its edge when her focus tightened. The fundamentals Ryzek had forced into them over the previous days were already proving their worth. Their Qi burned slower. Their movements under pressure were cleaner. Flight, when required, cost less than it had on the first day.
After several hours of hard travel, Ryzek raised a hand.
They stopped on a high ridge overlooking a wide, sunken basin.
Below them, partially buried in the black stone and half-swallowed by centuries of dust and pressure, stood the outer structure of the tomb.
It was larger than Lian had expected.
Massive slabs of dark mineral formed a stepped pyramid-like entrance, its surfaces covered in eroded carvings that time and the planet’s storms had nearly erased. Faint residual energy still clung to the structure — old, dense, and layered with formations that had partially collapsed under the long-term strain of Veythara’s Grave. The entrance itself was a tall, rectangular aperture sealed by a cracked barrier that flickered weakly in places. Around the base of the structure, the ground was littered with the remains of previous explorers: shattered armor, broken weapons, and bones that had long since been stripped clean by the environment and its scavengers.
Ryzek’s voice was low.
“The outer seals are unstable but still active in sections. We will not force the main entrance. There is a secondary access point on the eastern face where the formations have degraded further. That is our entry.”
He looked at Lian and Elara in turn.
“Once we are inside, you follow my signals. If I mark a path as unstable, you do not test it. If something forces a retreat, you do not argue. Tombs of this age and residual strength are not places for pride. They are places for calculated greed and rapid withdrawal when the cost becomes too high.”
Lian met the four amber eyes and gave a single nod. Elara did the same.
They descended into the basin.
The closer they moved to the tomb, the heavier the residual energy became. It pressed against their senses like a second atmosphere — old, watchful, and unwilling to yield its secrets easily. The carvings on the outer walls, though eroded, still carried fragments of power that made the black liquid inside Lian stir restlessly.
Ryzek led them along the eastern face until they reached a section where the stone had split under centuries of pressure. A narrow fissure, just wide enough for a person to pass sideways, cut into the structure. Faint cold air drifted out of the darkness beyond.
Ryzek activated a low-light crystal and stepped forward first.
“Stay close,” he said.
One by one, they entered the tomb of the unknown powerhouse.
