The vines did not stay severed.
Every time Lian’s black blade cut through one of the pale, whip-like tendrils, the stump shuddered and began to regenerate almost immediately. Dark sap welled, thickened, and hardened into new growth within seconds. Elara’s lightning seared through others, leaving charred ends, yet even those burned stumps twitched and pushed out fresh green-white shoots that rapidly lengthened. The tree was not simply enduring their attacks. It was replacing everything they destroyed faster than they could clear a path.
There was no end to it.
The chamber became a storm of lashing vines. Thin ones struck like spears. Thicker ones swept in wide arcs meant to crush or entangle. The group’s formation collapsed under the relentless pressure. One of Ryzek’s attendants was caught around the waist by a coil as thick as a man’s thigh. Before anyone could reach him, the vine constricted with a wet, final crunch and hurled the broken body into the darkness above. A second attendant lasted only moments longer — a cluster of thinner vines pierced his barriers and dragged him screaming into the mass of moving wood.
Ryzek’s amber energy flared brighter as he carved a temporary clearing, but even his controlled power could not keep up with the regeneration. Lian’s black liquid formed and reformed along his arms in rapid succession, each blade lasting only long enough to cut before he had to reshape it. Elara’s lightning arcs grew tighter and more desperate, burning through vine after vine only to watch them regrow.
“The roots!” Lian shouted over the chaos. “Go for the roots! The regeneration has to be feeding from below!”
Elara’s eyes locked onto his. She understood instantly. Ryzek’s four amber eyes flicked toward the base of the massive pale trunk, where thick root structures disappeared into the cracked stone floor of the chamber. If anything controlled the endless recovery of the vines, it would be there.
They tried.
Lian and Elara pushed forward together, black liquid and crackling lightning clearing a narrow path toward the trunk. Ryzek covered their flank, his energy spears punching through the denser vines that tried to cut them off. For a few precious seconds it seemed they might reach the base.
Then the tree changed tactics.
From the upper darkness, new vines dropped — thicker, heavier, and gleaming with a dull golden sheen. These were nothing like the pale ones they had been fighting. The golden vines moved with greater force and far greater speed. One of them cracked through the air like a giant whip and slammed into Lian’s side before he could fully reinforce. The impact lifted him off his feet and hurled him across the chamber. He hit the far wall hard enough to drive the air from his lungs. Pain exploded through his ribs. The black liquid surged to keep him conscious.
Elara fared little better. A golden vine swept low, caught her legs, and flung her into a cluster of the lesser tendrils. She carved her way free with a burst of lightning, but not before several of the pale vines raked deep lines across her alloy plating and the flesh beneath. Dark blood mixed with the tree’s hissing sap on the stone floor.
Ryzek was driven back as well. Two golden vines struck in coordinated arcs, smashing through the energy barrier he raised and forcing him to give ground. The crystalline ridges along his arms cracked under the force. His remaining attendants were already gone. Only the three of them remained.
The golden vines did not regenerate as quickly as the pale ones, but they did not need to. Each one that entered the fight was simply stronger — denser wood, heavier impact, and a residual energy that disrupted Qi circulation where they struck. Every time Lian or Elara tried to push toward the roots again, a golden vine intercepted them and hurled them back with bone-jarring force.
The living gate had revealed its true defensive layer.
The pale vines were the endless swarm. The golden ones were the hammers meant to break anything that refused to die quickly.
Lian forced himself back to his feet, blood running from the corner of his mouth. The black liquid formed a denser blade along his right arm, the matter surface drinking in the dim light of the chamber. Elara’s lightning flared brighter despite her injuries, the arcs now edged with the sharper control. Ryzek’s four amber eyes burned with cold calculation as he reassessed the tree that had already claimed half his team.
