Lian turned back again.
The ridge behind him was empty.
He slowed, then stopped completely, boots steady on the black stone. The silver-armored beast that had been closing the distance with such relentless speed was gone. No heavy impacts echoed through the fissures. No scraping of bone plates against rock. No low, grinding breaths.
Nothing.
Lian stood still and swept the surrounding terrain with his eyes. The broken ridges, the narrow cuts, the deeper fissures — all of it looked the same as before. Loose stones lay where they had been dislodged during the chase. A few fresh scrapes marked the steeper faces where the creature had climbed. But the beast itself was nowhere in sight.
He extended his perception carefully.
The planet’s pressure made fine detection harder than usual, yet he still should have been able to pick up a Star 3 life signature at this range. He pushed further, filtering out the background noise of wind and distant movement. There was nothing. No residual trail. No fading presence. It was as if the creature had simply ceased to exist the moment he looked away.
Lian’s eyes narrowed.
He turned in a slow circle, checking the higher slopes and the shadowed overhangs. The silver beast was large — far too large to hide easily in this terrain. Even if it had dropped into a fissure, the sound of its bulk moving through stone should have carried. Yet the eastern lines remained quiet except for the constant wind.
He took a few steps back along his previous path, searching for tracks. The deep impressions left by the creature’s hands and feet ended abruptly near a cluster of tilted slabs. Beyond that point, the stone was undisturbed. No continuation. No sign of a leap or a climb.
It had vanished.
Lian stood there for several long breaths, mind working through the possibilities. Camouflage of some kind. A burrowing ability. A short-range displacement. Or simply an intelligence high enough to break line of sight and wait. The limited cunning it had shown while herding him earlier made the last option feel plausible.
He was still turning the question over when the world slammed into him from above.
There was almost no warning.
A massive weight crashed down from a higher ridge, driving him off his feet and crushing him against the black stone hard enough to crack it. Pain exploded through his back and ribs. The air left his lungs in a single harsh burst. Silver bone plates filled his vision — smooth, cold, and impossibly close.
The creature had not disappeared.
It had climbed higher and waited.
Lian barely managed to get one arm up before a heavy, bone-armored hand smashed down toward his head. He twisted hard. The blow caught his shoulder instead and drove him deeper into the cracked stone. Something in his upper chest gave way with a sharp, internal sound. Fresh blood filled his mouth.
The beast pressed down with its full weight, pinning him. Its pale silver eyes stared into his without sound or roar, only a focused, crushing intent. The bone plates covering its body left few gaps. When Lian forced a short, dense blade into being and stabbed upward, the edge scraped uselessly across the silver armor, leaving only a shallow white mark.
It was stronger than him.
Much stronger.
A Star 3 body enhanced by natural bone plating and raw physical power was not something a Star 1 cultivator could meet head-on. Every attempt Lian made to create space was shut down immediately. The creature shifted its weight, drove a knee into his legs, and slammed him sideways into a jutting slab of rock. The impact rang through his bones. His vision narrowed for a moment.
He tried to use the terrain, rolling toward a drop-off to force the beast to adjust. It followed without hesitation, one massive hand closing around his torso and lifting him clear of the ground before smashing him back down. Stone shattered under the force. Lian’s breath came in short, wet pulls. The difference in raw power was absolute.
The silver-armored creature did not rush to finish him.
It simply kept him pinned and broken against the rock, pale eyes watching, as if confirming that the threat had been neutralized before deciding on the final blow.
Lian’s fingers scraped against the stone.
He was not winning this fight.
He was surviving it — barely — and only for as long as the beast chose to prolong the moment.
