The chamber floor turned into a slaughter.

More of the six-legged hunters poured through the entrance in a continuous, snarling wave. Their four-eyed heads swung wildly as they tried to process the sudden shift from open chase to enclosed killing ground. The living gate did not give them time. Pale vines dropped in thick curtains, coiling around legs, throats, and spines with ruthless speed. Some hunters were lifted clear off the floor and slammed into the walls. Others were dragged toward the main trunk, where thicker vines constricted until bone and hide gave way. Dark blood and the tree’s hissing sap spread across the ancient stone.

Elara remained pressed flat against the upper wall, breathing in controlled, shallow pulls. Beside her, Ryzek was equally still, four amber eyes tracking every major movement below. Neither of them shifted so much as a finger. The vines had already proven they could strike with precision. Any noticeable motion on the walls might draw the tree’s attention upward before the chaos reached its peak.

The noise kept growing.

Heavier impacts echoed from the corridor. Something large was forcing its way through the narrower sections, scraping stone and driving smaller creatures ahead of it in panic. A moment later the magma-plated beast Ryzek had drawn shouldered its way into the chamber with a ground-shaking roar. Crimson veins along its body flared bright as it swung its massive head and immediately came under attack from multiple vines at once. The tree recognized the greater threat. Golden vines — thicker, heavier, and faster than the pale ones — dropped from the upper darkness and lashed toward the Star 7 creature with focused intent.

The magma beast answered with raw power. It caught one golden vine in its jaws and bit clean through, spraying dark fluid. Another vine wrapped its forelimb; the beast simply drove that limb into the floor hard enough to crack the stone and pin the vine in place before ripping free. The exchange sent shockwaves through the chamber. Smaller hunters caught in the middle were crushed or thrown aside without either of the larger combatants seeming to notice.

Phase Stalker distortions flickered at the edges of the fight, taking opportunistic cuts at both the tree and the magma beast whenever an opening appeared. The entire floor had become a layered melee of competing predators and the living gate that refused to yield its chamber.

Still no clear sign of Lian.

Elara’s eyes moved briefly toward the entrance corridor between the surges of movement. The flow of new creatures continued, but she could not isolate his presence among the noise and overlapping signatures. She forced the concern down and kept her body locked in place. Breaking stillness now would waste the opening they were waiting for.

Below, the tree committed more of its golden vines to the magma beast. The pale ones continued harvesting the six-legged pack and anything else small enough to coil around. For the first time since they had entered the tomb, the living gate’s attention was fully occupied by the sheer volume of targets on the floor.

Ryzek’s head turned a fraction toward Elara.

She met his gaze and gave the slightest nod.

The chaos had reached the level they needed.

Elara adjusted her weight against the wall by the smallest degree, preparing to drop the moment a clear lane opened toward the base of the trunk.
