Jimmy didn’t know if he was still on Earth. He couldn’t be. These lands were too magical, too odd, but it was as beautiful as planet Earth.
He couldn’t get enough of the land. He loved looking at them as he beamed through the sky above.
There were soft hints, patterns within the land, that told unwritten stories.
Every hill, every stream, every breathing being was like a pillar of a deeper story. He pictured men fighting over the hills, armies seizing land, or merchants alike.
Nothing was conclusive, but there were so many possibilities. The stories could be sweet, and sour, there was no way of knowing for sure, but it helped Jimmy experience some sweet emotions for once.
Regardless if he was here or not, life continued across the lands. He was aware of this now, more than ever.
It made him feel a little bit less sad of being dealt a bad hand in life, twice. Other than the fact that he transmigrated as a crow, which he found to be a great, cruel disadvantage, he didn’t have a great life as a human either.
The fact that the lands, and perhaps the universe didn’t care about his bad luck, was somehow relieving. He felt better.
Anyway, as they flew further Eastwards, the lands changed once more. The descending hills only stretched a bit less than two-hundred kilometers, stashed between the ’new’ lands, and the meadows.
The descending hills shifted into a mostly flat land, covered with hundreds of lakes and ponds.
There were bodies of water as far as the eye could see, and more beyond that point. It was absolutely beautiful, but having been a human himself, Jimmy knew that it was a nightmare to navigate these lands, topographically called Lakeland, if one walked through its slithering patches of dry land on foot.
There were barely any trees in the Lakelands, which was to say that the lack of wood was a Grade-A crutch to any human who wanted to build a settlement here.
This was one of the first few thoughts that went through Jimmy’s head as he observed the Lakelands, but he was gravely mistaken. Well, he was okay, he was safe, but there were a lot more settlements here than he could’ve ever expected.
"How?" He cocked his head back, "Are those wooden houses? The hell did they get the wood from?"
Jimmy looked back on the hills they left behind, and re-confirmed that there were barely any forested patches there. The settlements across the Lakelands ahead, couldn’t have possibly imported their woods from the hills alone.
Even from his limited point of view, he managed to spot fifteen villages. They were small, they were villages, but it still meant that someone had bothered to settle here.
"There are plenty of lakes," He said, "Maybe they risked it for all the fish they could catch?"
That was the only thing that made sense, it was human, they tended to build their life near water, but he was tempted to have a better look at how they lived their lives.
Jimmy didn’t see any towns yet, and he wasn’t sure why. These villagers obviously defied all odds and got wood they can work with, and build with, so they could’ve built a one big town instead of being scattered hundreds of feet within each other.
"They’re either as dumb as cavemen, or there’s a pattern here that I’m not seeing." He said, "They obviously have no shortage of food, but... did that cripple them?"
Curiosity killed the cat, or at least, it was going to give its best shot to kill a crow, because under the pretext of resting, Jimmy had the team land close by to one of the many villages.
They’ve been flying for hours anyway, and it was nearly dark now, so it was a good time to stop, eat, and then sleep.
’The villages are too small,’ He thought, ’They could’ve made a stone city if they wanted to, but they didn’t. I have a hunch that they focused on magic instead. I hope they did, I want to see what cool shit I can steal from them. Fireballs can only get me so far.’
The system could get him far too, in terms of magic, but any other sub-branch that wasn’t related to elemental magic, was too expensive for him to start practicing properly. He’d have to massacre a village of humans to get a head-start, or he’d have to kill a massive beast, and he didn’t think he could do either of those things, be it from the risks involved, or from the guilt he’d feel afterwards.
"Can you guys scope the place, and see if you can get us some food?" He asked, "I’d hunt if I could, but I’m a big boy, my stomach is basically eating itself right now. I can’t afford to move around right now."
Vorin nodded, and flew away from the tree they landed on. He didn’t care how tired he was, and was eager to serve his brother for once.
The lady crows followed Vorin, as if they didn’t trust his ability to provide.
As for Virena, she began to hunt as well, but she stuck close to Jimmy, pouncing on bugs that had the utter bad luck to fly past her.
"Eat," She said, and tossed a couple of dragonflies towards him.
"Thank you," He said, and swallowed the bugs in one gulp, "My stomach’s so hot that I was worried it was going to boil me alive."
The bugs he ate helped tame the stomach acid, at least a little bit. He could focus again, and for a mind as curious as his, this opened up pathways to greater means.
Jimmy opened the Evolution Tree, and browsed the fifth branch, offering miscellaneous purchases. This was a branch that he didn’t frequent as often as he wanted to.
It took little searching to find the thing he was looking for, a purchase that he had ignored in his earlier days of this odd life, because it seemed a little bit expensive, and mostly useless.
The Human Communicator.
Jimmy specifically avoided this, because back in the home city, there was no benefit to communicating with humans. They were far too violent there, and he figured that a talking crow would get the humans riled up, and get him killed.
Now, he had another idea in mind. He wanted to talk to the humans, for the sake of reaping whatever secret they may be holding across the villages, and he was hoping that they were less violent than the humans back in the home city.

Jimmy expected to faint. Over the weeks, he has gotten a good, intuitive feel of what sort of pain certain purchases caused him, and the Human Communicator, which was solely targeted to his brain, should overload his brain. He figured that human languages were far more complicated to the thirty million insect languages that he learned in a flash.
"Hehehe free IQ upgrade," He muttered to himself.
[Complete]
[-1,000 system points]
[Remaining points: 6,555]
Excited as he was, he waited for the system to notify him of the IQ upgrade. He didn’t know why the upgrade was implemented so quickly, and pain free, but he was enthusiastic about the matter nonetheless.
Jimmy waited for a few seconds, but still, nothing.
Desperate, he asked, ’What just happened, system? Learning every human language out there doesn’t constitute an IQ upgrade?’
[You haven’t fully read the description of the Human Communicator purchase.]
[The highlighted 100x mark should’ve been your clue, but basically, it’s not possible for me to stash every human language into your brain. They’re far more complicated than the 30 million bug languages you purchased, and learned weeks ago.]
’What was that about the 100x?’ He asked, and was too sleepy to open, and read the tab to the Evolution Tree once more. ’Are we just throwing numbers around now?’
[Not at all.]
[With the Human Communicator, you can learn human languages 100 times faster, at least compared to how long it would’ve taken you to learn them without this purchase.]
Jimmy was sleepy, initially, but the system got him so aggravated that he was fully awake again. He couldn’t believe what he was hearing, well, he could believe it, he was just angry that he couldn’t indulge in his fresh obsessions right off the bat.
’Sounds useless,’ He sighed, ’Humans aren’t exactly friendly, and helpful to random animals. What am I supposed to do, pop up in their windows and ask them to teach me their language?’
[A safer alternative would be to sit near humans, and listen to them talk. With the Human Communicator, you’ll be able to pick up on the pattern of their language 100 times faster than you would have, without the purchase. Crows are already known to pick up on such patterns, and in your case, you’ll simply have a significant helping hand.]
’My God, this’ll be an annoying experiment,’ He grunted.
