“You’re in the pod, right?” I said to my phone. “Can you open the door for me?”

There was silence, until she said, “Yeah, my phone can unlock the door. Take your time. There’s no emergency. I’m surviving…” The words were quiet and nauseous. “It’ll just be a bit disgusting. And you’ll have to carry me to the bathr—” Her words cut off, and the microphone stopped picking up noise.

“I’m almost there!” I pushed past the crowd, taking the final corner before slipping to the street of Veyra’s apartment, where I quickly ran the rest of the way. I clicked the buzzer. “You got that?”

Yeah…” The door opened. Inside, an elderly lady on a wheelchair was waiting for the elevator with her assistant. I greeted them before rushing to the stairs, two steps at a time to her apartment on the third floor. “I’m here,” I said and rang the doorbell.

The lock clicked open. I ended the call and entered.

No catastrophes met me at the door. Everything seemed perfectly calm. I could see Veyra in her game pod, distorted by the tempered glass. I took off my shoes and headed over, opening the door.

“Hey…” Veyra said.

I wasn’t sure what I’d been expecting. The chaotic emotions made me believe I’d witness some sort of life-altering disaster, or something vile straight from a horror movie. Now that I was here, though, I just found Veyra in her game pod. She wore sweatpants and a casual black shirt. As for what she found disgusting, her shirt had a few wet stains near the collar, and that seemed to be it. She hadn’t eaten enough to make much of a mess at all.

The stomach ache looked very much real from her face, though. She winced.

“To the bathroom?” I asked.

“Yeah…” she said weakly, as if speaking irritated her stomach. “Take my shirt off first. And maybe wipe my mouth…”

I did both, starting by grabbing a napkin to wipe her mouth. Taking her shirt off was a bit more awkward with her back pressed against the game pod, but I managed.

Her hand shook enough for me to feel it as I lifted her up. “The shower seat,” she said weakly. I brought her there and helped place her puke bucket on her lap.

“Thanks... That’s all. You can wait outside.”

She was visibly shivering. She had told me not to offer help if she didn't ask for it, but there was no way sitting alone, in her bra, could be comfortable.

“I’ll grab a blanket,” I said.

I took one from her couch and carried a seat next to her. I placed the blanket over her back and sat with her.

“I’ll leave if you want me to,” I said. “But I’ll stay if you let me.”

She said nothing, face buried in her bucket, hand still shaking.

That continued. She tried to keep a strong face, but the pain was clearly the worst part. She gagged without puking anything, yet her stomach still believed it needed to dispose of some poison inside her. The bucket had more spit and tears than anything from her stomach.

I wasn’t sure if I should have said anything. Just sitting there felt right, so that’s what I did, silently letting her lean on my shoulder, as if to tell her I was here, and I wasn’t going anywhere. I couldn’t make pain disappear, but I hoped I offered strength to fight through it.

That lasted for around thirty minutes, until the worst of it seemed to be ending. Veyra’s constant gag reflexes calmed to what seemed like just nausea. She took calm breaths.

After a few minutes she was the first to speak.

“Do you still love me?”

The way she said that made me chuckle a bit. “I love you, Veyra.” I held her hand tighter. “I’m not going anywhere.”

She stared at her puke bucket, clearly still nauseous. “I love you too…”

I let her lean on my shoulder, as we stayed there to make sure it had all calmed down. Eventually, she said, “It's getting better. Thanks.”

I smiled. “I should clean your game pod, right?”

“Sure… And give me my toothbrush.”

Her face was pale, far from smiling, but it looked like the stomach ache was finally over. Something resembling relief showed on her face. I smiled at that and checked her game pod. It had stayed clean, as her shirt had caught everything. I threw that to the washing machine.

With that, it looked like everything was fine. I wrapped the blanket fully around Veyra, gave her a little kiss on the forehead, and carried her to the couch. I sat next to her.

“Can I still help somehow?” I asked.

She kept staring at her empty television, not moving. “That's a weekly occurrence on average, just so you know.”

“It happens,” I said. “I’m happy you’re feeling better.”

“Mhm.” She paused, hardly moving, until she said, “Sorry if I’m still acting weird. I need to stay in place so it doesn’t get worse again.”

“Sick people are exempt from social norms.”

That made her snort, a slight smile appearing. “I think my ex traumatized me with this. I wasn’t planning on ever inviting you over.”

“You’ve had an ex?” I asked.

“Yeah…” Veyra said. “We dated for like a month. He met me in real life… and he broke up the very same day. I guess some of it was because I got banned, but he definitely didn’t want to date a cripple either. He was just excited about dating a top mage player who lived nearby, I guess.”

“I’m not bothered about it,” I said. “I’ve thought about it a lot. No matter how I see it, I don’t mind you being paralyzed.”

“And what about my vomiting disorder?”

“I mean… It sucks, obviously. I’ll pray that it’s cured. But I’d never leave you over it. I’ve thought about what I want for the future, and I decided I want to spend my life with you.”

“Mm. Okay. Good to know.”

She stayed still in silence for a long pause, staring at the television screen. “Sorry, my head is a mess right now. It’s like I just learned Santa is actually real.”

I laughed. “We can talk about serious stuff later.”

“Yeah… thanks.”

“Do you still need something?” I asked.

“No,” Veyra said. “I usually go to sleep when it calms down. Or back to VR if it’s not late.”

“Alright,” I said. “Should I bring you to bed?”

She thought about it. “What about you? Are you leaving?”

“If you don’t kick me out, I’m not going anywhere,” I said. “I can stay the night.”

She looked like she wanted to ask something, but hesitated. Something that took a moment to gather courage. “And... What if I ask you to sleep with me?”

I raised my eyebrows. “In the same bed?”

Her head flicked to me, now speaking louder. “Nothing weird, just to sleep and cuddle! I know I’m not as hot in real life after that, but—”

“You’re gorgeous, Veyra,” I said. “I’ll absolutely sleep with you.”

Her mouth got frozen as she looked into my eyes.

“Should I carry you there? Right now?”

Some light still shone in through the blinds. I didn’t have a change of clothes here, and all of my stuff was still unprotected in my hotel room. It probably wasn’t a good idea to leave a ten thousand dollar VR headset there. But if Veyra wanted me in her bed, just about nothing would make me leave.

“Yeah?” she said with a nervous nod.

Her bed clearly wasn’t meant for two. We’d be forced to be shoulder-to-shoulder, or sleep in a spoon, if we wanted to fit in the same bed. Regardless, I lifted her in. She lay sideways near the edge, and I snuck in, under her blanket.

I stayed sideways, facing her. Neither of us closed our eyes. Her face was getting red instead of pale, too nervous to smile.

This wasn’t the first time I’d been so close to her, but I it was the first time without her make-up on. At Worlds, a subtle amount of eyeliner had highlighted the cute shape of her face. Without it, her features were softer. More innocent.

“I still can’t believe how cute you are,” I said.

Her eyes shied away, and she blocked her face with her hand.

“Sorry.” I turned to my back at the very edge of the bed, where I had just enough space to not touch while we slept.

Veyra slid closer, her hair touching my shoulder. “I'll only let you flirt with me if you mean it. How can I know you’re not lying to me?”

I breathed in, trying to calm my heart. “Veyra… I’m about to fail the promise right now.”

“What promise?”

“To not do anything weird in bed.”

She pressed closer, until my hands touched her bra. I felt my face getting hot.

“Well, what do you want to do?” she asked in a soft tone that didn't help at all. “I won't let you escape now, after you said all that.”

I gave up fighting, and found my face against hers. She flinched, but our tongues met, and she leaned into it. It tasted like strong minty toothpaste. Maybe not the best time for a kiss.

By the time it ended, her pupils were growing wider, staring at me, just like they had earlier today in Movie Night Simulator.

“Are you really feeling better now?” I whispered. “Maybe we should rest first.”

She breathed heavily against my face. “Can I… touch you for a bit?”

“Always.”

Slowly, she slid her hand down, between my crotch. There was a flash in her eyes when she touched it through my pants. “Oh,” she said.

Her eyes wandered from place to place. “Uh… I mean… With a condom, maybe?”

Oh my god. Was this actually happening?

“Do you mean that?” I asked. “Like, are you fully serious?”

Her eyes were spinning. “Yeah? I’m serious?”

I pulled out my wallet from my pocket. From the coin department, I pulled out a little protective case, because apparently keeping condoms directly in a wallet could be bad. I opened it and showed the "just in case"reserves to Veyra.

Her mouth hung open. “You’re actually keeping that around? For who?”

I pressed it against her forehead.

“I told you no penetration, though!”

“Yeah, and I’ll respect that,” I said. “These are just in case you change your mind.”

She grabbed the condom and faced it in disbelief.

“I won’t take advantage of you if your head isn’t clear right now,” I said. “Maybe we should do it later.”

“No,” Veyra said, sliding closer, nearly pushing me off of the bed. “Take off my pants.”
