Avoiding Death in an Otome Game

Chapter 39 -- 39: Flying Class & Sky Steps

Chapter 39: Chapter- 39: Flying Class & Sky Steps

One Month Later

In the Academy’s Cafeteria

"Today is our first Flying Class, I am really eager for it"

Elena said while looking in a small notebook in which all the class schedules are written including special classes.

"I am also very eager. There are not many attributes based classes because only few students can attend them"

’Flying Class’ as the name suggests is to learn flying magic and other techniques related to flying, so it’s a wind attribute specific class.

Although I have already mastered most of the basic and intermediate wind magics, I really want to see how good other students are, especially the seniors.

Elena is also very good at flying magic. She has been practicing it since I taught her that several years ago.

"Good for you, but there is no other class so I don’t know what to do in the free period. I just hope they don’t give us some writing assignment"

Ian said with an anxious look. He really does not like to sit still in class, well I don’t like that either.

"Don’t worry, I do not think that will happen. Since the flight class is scheduled for the last period, they might just let you leave earlier"

"Then I can go to the nursery to look after my plant"

Lily added happily. The academy has a nursery for mainly conducting the alchemy class. The students can also research over plants there.

"Can I accompany you?"

"Ah- yes. If you would like to"

Lily seems flustered as she replied to Ian’s question.

There is definitely something going on between these two. Are they already secretly dating? Nah, that is unlikely.

*That reminds me....*

I peeked towards Elena who just finished eating her lunch.

The other day after we came back from the battle arena, I suddenly had a thought after talking with Elena. I also asked for Ian’s opinion and he also affirmed that Elena probably has romantic feelings for me.

At first I thought that might just be my over thinking but as we spend more time together everyday, I started to think more and more about that, especially after what happened in the library that day.

[Author: my characters are just like me, f*cking overthinkers]

....

Last Period; Flying Class

"Good afternoon sir Kai, and also to Lady Elena"

"Good afternoon your highness, nice to see you here"

As soon as Elena and I reached the academy’s training ground, we were greeted by princess Kajol who arrived just before us.

The Karnis family of Keshan are known as the world’s best wind magic users, and as a member of the Karnis family, she also has a wind attribute.

I realized that Elena suddenly moved closer to me when the princess arrived and I also noticed her pouting as she watched my and the princess’s interaction.

*Is she perhaps feeling jealous?*

I don’t know how to take it but she looks kind of cute like this.

"I am eager to see how good you are at flying magic, I have high expectations"

The princess said to me as she headed back to her friend Lisa. Honestly her approaches are disturbing as I don’t know her motive.

There are also students from other classes as well as from second and third year.

All these are the students who have either wind attributes or some ability that allows them to fly.

"Oh teacher is here!"

I heard a certain senior student say that as all the fellow students followed his line of sight and we saw a person flying towards us. It is a middle aged lady in her late forties.

"Welcome new students, I am Janet Cupin"

She is the wife of principal Alfred and also the vice principal of this academy. I had heard from my mother that she has been teaching in this academy since even my parents were just students.

"I will take your special class today, older students are already familiar with it. For the new students, I will briefly explain to you about the class..."

"Alright, I hope you understand everything I just said. So for the start of the class let’s divide it into those who can already fly and those who can’t. The students who can’t use any kind of flying skill yet raise their hands"

A few students nervously raised their hands, most of them are first year students. It also includes that Mason guy from the entrance test and Kajol’s friend Lisa.

Well Lisa’s situation is different since she doesn’t even have a wind attribute, though she might be able to fly after some practice with her unique power.

"All of you come forward, and tell me about your respective problem regarding the flying magic. Meanwhile all the other students, make a round of academy campus while flying. Jasmine, you lead them"

The student council president Jasmine Curzon is also here. She is also one of those who can fly without the wind attribute.

"Everyone, follow me"

Jasmine said as she cast magic, her feet left the ground but there aren’t high wind movements that you usually see in flying magic because it’s not a flying magic of the wind attribute but a ’Levitation’ magic of Gravity attribute.

Yes, Gravity is the attribute of the Curzon family. It’s an attribute comparable to a higher element.

Jasmine flies in the direction of one of the teaching buildings and the other students are naturally followed after her by their own abilities.

Most of them are naturally wind magic users like us, but some of them have to use their magic staff to use the magic. Of course, Elena and I don’t need that, we just cast the magic normally and fly after her.

We overtook other students, including a student with bird type beast magic and soon reached close to Jasmine. We did not increase our speed further, because it’s better not to offend the council president.

Another person also just followed behind us and reached beside us, it is the princess Kajol.

Halfway through, Jasmine increases her speed so do we as our group get further ahead of other students. There was also another third year male student who kept up with us.

...

After completing a round of the whole campus, we returned to the academy ground.

Our group which includes me, Elena, Kajol, Jasmine and another third year student, is naturally the first to arrive.

And as we just arrived there, we saw a unique spectacle. A big bird, a little bigger than an average human in size is coming out from a magic circle like thing.

"What is going on here!?"

One of the students following behind us exclaimed on seeing a big bird, bigger than an average human in size coming out from a magic circle like thing.

It’s the summoning magic and the one casting it is Lisa.

Her attribute is summoning but unlike those summoning powers in anime or manga, summoners here aren’t really summoning any real creatures from another dimension but just a copy of a magic beast of this world.

Which means that those aren’t actual living beings but magically created entities. Most summoners also have restrictions on the type of their summoning creatures.

For example, Lisa can only summon bird type magic beasts.

It doesn’t matter what element or what kind, as long as she has seen it before and can match its magic capacity, she can summon their copy.

"Not bad. I can definitely teach you how to ride it but I am warning you beforehand that it can be very dangerous"

We heard miss Janet say that to Lisa, as we landed on the ground not far from them.

Then miss Janet looked at us and nodded with a satisfied smile.

"New students this year don’t look bad. All of you are very talented, it will be a worthwhile class"

"Teacher, you are making it sound like we were not good students"

The third year male student said in a joking tone.

"Well Antonio, they are faster than you were in your first year"

Miss Janet replied with a gentle smile. This teacher seems like an easy going one.

"Alright, now let’s seriously start the class! Jasmine, Antonio, you two help these students in learning the basic flying"

Miss Janet entrusted the students who can’t fly, to the two seniors as she guides us who can fly to the next lesson.

"So, your first lesson is to learn ’Eight Sky Step’. Old students already know about it and many of you new students might know about it as well. For those who don’t, I will demonstrate it, so look closely"

Miss Janet said as she cast flying magic but she didn’t immediately fly, instead she used another technique.

Condensing wind below her feet, she kicked it with force as the reverse force boosts her flying speed, she flies for a few meters and again did the same technique as her speed further increased.

She did the same thing six more times at a rapid pace and by the end, her speed was so fast that students had trouble following her with their eyes.

We didn’t even realize when she already came back to the ground in front of us.

Reaching the speed of wind in eight steps, that’s the ’Eight Sky Steps’. Of course, it’s impossible for these students to learn it completely, because only a grand mage can do it.

But learning the first few steps is possible, even if someone can reach up to six steps before becoming a grand mage, then they can be called a prodigy.

After demonstrating it once, Miss Janet called upon the students who could already perform the first few steps.

Most students could only do up to two steps, while there were few seniors who could barely do three steps.

Elena easily performed three steps which surprised the seniors who could barely do it.

But what surprised everyone even more was the princess who not only easily did three steps, but also tried to reach the fourth but unfortunately failed to do so.

Now it is my turn.

I also started using basic flying magic like everyone else. With the "thud" sound I kicked the wind and took the first step.

First....second.....third....fourth.

"F-...Fourth! He did the four steps!"

By the fourth kick, I was already much above the height of the academy building so I couldn’t hear what the students were saying but they seemed surprised.

Actually, I can perform up to the fifth step without any problem but that would be too much to show in front of the class.

So I just stopped at the fourth step and went to the ground at my accelerated speed. I can land without any trouble because I am used to this kind of speed.

Honestly I want to try the sixth step also but that will be too risky, as the last three steps put a lot of impact on the body, and my body isn’t strong enough to endure that yet.

"That was amazing! Even Antonio can’t do it that easily!"

One of the students exclaimed in surprise, he is also probably a third year student.

Other students were also looking at me with surprised expressions, fortunately I stopped at the fourth step otherwise they might have been completely shocked if I had gone for the fifth.
