Angela met Cecilia in the wide corridor of the palace, the space between them narrowing with every step. Sunlight streamed through the high, arched windows, casting long golden rectangles across the polished marble floor.
The two women approached from opposite ends of a three-way intersection, their footsteps echoing in perfect counterpoint, and came to a halt in the center, face to face.
Angela had changed clothes. Gone was the plain garment she had worn in the dungeon. In its place, she wore a gown of deep sapphire velvet, cut in the timeless silhouette that had been the height of fashion years ago, before her imprisonment.
The fabric draped her like it had missed her, rich and regal, and her dark hair had been brushed to a soft shine, threaded with pearls.
She finally looked like a proper princess once more.
But the first thing Cecilia said was, "No. No, I know you don’t have much time to choose a dress for today’s occasion, but this is insulting. Where’s my Gigi? Who are you?"
Angela’s dress was the one she had worn in the days before the dungeon. Beautiful, yes, but years out of date.
Angela took in Cecilia’s own ensemble with an arched brow.
She was dressed as Lady Sees, the Dragon Physician persona she had adopted not long ago, in a thin desert dress with a large fur pelt draped over her shoulders.
The pelt covered her entire body except her head, and a veil obscured everything except her red-painted lips.
"Seeing you dress like that also unnerves me," Angela said, though a small smile tugged at the corner of her mouth.
Despite the years, Angela’s dress was a timeless design. And if Angela was the one wearing it, it would be back in fashion by tomorrow. She was La Vixenette Princesse, after all. Cecilia was only teasing.
"I didn’t know you would endorse my decision this strongly," Angela said.
"I actually love this decision so very much, Angela. You truly have chosen the perfect empress." Cecilia nodded, her voice warm behind the veil. "The future of Iondora truly is safe in your and your brother’s hands."
Angela smiled. Receiving praise from the Saintess herself, and even now, from the woman who had ascended to something resembling a goddess, would always give her a good feeling.
Marrying a dragon and still bonding with two other beasts. Who else in the world could do such a thing?
"I was unsure before. But now I’m relieved that I made the right choice," Angela said. "Cece, I’m really glad you’re alive."
Cecilia smiled back. "I’m glad I’m alive and able to know someone like you, too."
They stopped before a grand set of double doors, and in that moment, both women shed their private selves and assumed the roles they carried.
The Criminal Princess of the Empire.
And the Mysterious Luna of the Black Wolf King.
The doors opened. Inside, a young woman rose from her seat to receive them.
The two women entered the guest reception room together, and the air inside seemed to shift.
It was not merely their beauty that commanded the space, though that alone would have been enough to silence a room, but the sheer weight of their presence.
The young woman waiting for them was neatly dressed in traveling clothes, her posture straight, her hands clasped before her.
There was a hint of fear in her face, but alongside it was an alert, intelligent aura. Bessa had seen enough of the world to know when she was in the presence of power, and this room was drowning in it.
Although this one didn’t feel grimy and dark like the world of power she knew.
Angela stopped before her, the sapphire gown settling around her. Her red lips curved into a smile that was both warm and unreadable.
Immediately, everyone in the room, not just the three women, but the servants standing at the edges, felt the blatant weight of the princess’ presence. It felt like thousands of eyes looking down at them.
"Alchemist Bessa, welcome to the Iondora Empire’s Capital Palace. I’m happy to finally invite you here."
Bessa curtsied carefully. Even with a prosthetic leg, her posture didn’t fail her, just as the device didn’t.
"Thank you, Princess. It’s... it’s an honor to finally meet with you again." Her eyes flickered to the woman beside Angela.
Bessa knew who she was. "Esteemed Dragon Lord’s Belove—"
"I’m Sees, the Luna of the Black Wolf King," Cecilia interjected smoothly. Her face betrayed nothing, but inside, she almost smothered Bessa’s mouth with telekinesis.
She hadn’t expected Bessa to recognize her.
When she had stayed with Oathran in the mountain aerie, she hadn’t worn a veil, hadn’t concealed her scent, and hadn’t altered the way she subtly moved.
But this woman had seen through a disguise that even beast lords couldn’t penetrate.
Could it be that all alchemists were like that? They were sensitive about the kind of people able to become fellow alchemists, after all.
The alchemist guilds recruited slaves and orphans with just a glance, plucking the gifted from the masses as though they could see the spark of potential burning in their very souls.
Was it all just aura?
"A-apologies. I must be mistaken!" Bessa bowed quickly, her cheeks flushing.
"You are not," Cecilia smiled, her voice warm despite the veil. "Just that in this place, I prefer to be known as the Luna of Arkai Dawnoro."
Bessa raised her face, dumbfounded.
What did that even mean?! The beloved mate of the Dragon Lord... and also the Luna of the Black Wolf King?! What in the world—
"Do you know why you’re summoned here today, Miss Bessa?" Cecilia asked.
"No, my Lady," Bessa answered, her voice carefully steady.
After her last meeting with Alchemist Dean, he had told her that she had been summoned straight to the Iondora Capital Palace. The order had come from Princess Angela herself.
Bessa had spent the journey here turning the possibilities over in her mind, and she still didn’t know what to expect.
Even though she had technically paid her one favor by helping Cecilia with the miracle and healing elixirs, in the end, Bessa felt that the favor had not been from her, but for her.
These two women standing before her had connected her with dragons.
Literal gods!
If they said it was a second favor... you know, if Princess Angela claimed she had merely granted a second blessing for her after she kidnapped Bessa away from the Alchemist Guild and hid her in a peaceful life as a farmer in the middle of nowhere, exactly as Bessa had wished, Bessa couldn’t argue.
After all, connecting with the Dragon Lord and his aides was an honor beyond measure. People would literally trade countries for that.
And more than that, it had led her to meet that person.
Lord Jenggala.
The one who had built her leg... The one who flew her across the world to see sea lavender and promised to show her sunflowers next... The one whose smile made her heart flutter even when she knew it shouldn’t.
Bessa couldn’t run away from Angela anymore. Not after everything.
Even with her life, she had to repay the princess somehow.
So she stood there, straight-backed and ready, waiting to hear what was being asked of her.
"Bessa, I am going to grant you a surname and a noble identity. From now on, you are Lady Bessa Sonder of the Iondora Empire," Angela said.
Bessa flinched as her eyes widened.
For a moment, there was only silence. Her lips parted, but no sound came out. Then, barely above a whisper, she asked, "...Pardon me?"
"This title is something you must accept regardless of everything. I do not accept any rejection," Angela said, calm and absolute.
"This is why I must be here, Miss Bessa." Cecilia stepped forward, her tone softening. "I know we told you that your debt of favor was paid once you helped me with the potions. But on this, I will negotiate and take that favor as my own debt to be paid, not the favor you owed the Princess."
Cecilia smiled. "I will grant any wish you have in the future. Anything."
"And with the favor still in my hand, thanks to this woman taking away its weight, I will ask you to take this title to pay for the favor I gave you years ago," Angela continued seamlessly.
"The favor of saving you from the Alchemist Guild. The favor of hiding you. The favor of giving you the peaceful life you always wanted."
Bessa still couldn’t fully process this. Her mind was racing, stumbling over itself, trying to grasp the shape of what was being offered.
A noble identity? A surname?
It was beyond anything she had ever imagined for herself. She was an alchemist, an orphan, a one-legged farmer from the middle of nowhere. And now they were handing her a name.
"That can’t be all there is, right?" she asked, her voice smaller than she intended.
Paying a favor by taking a noble title? Wouldn’t that also count as a blessing, not the settling of a debt?
Angela nodded. "Of course."
Bessa stiffened. The air around her grew heavier. Of course there was more.
With a title came the responsibility behind it. The expectations and the obligations. It might be a chain, tying her to a brand new life she never wanted again.
But nothing could’ve warned Bessa of what she heard next.
"Lady Bessa Sonder will be the candidate for the next Empress of Iondora Empire."
