Cecilia glanced at Angela from behind her veil. The fine silk obscured the movement of her eyes, but she didn’t want Angela to miss the look, so she clicked her tongue against her cheek and let the corner of her mouth curl upward, signalling her.
She knew that Angela, her best friend, would’ve caught it immediately even if her look was obscured with the veil. They were that close. The curl on her lips made Angela’s own smile bloom like a flower in the sun. "Ehehe."
"Did you do it?!" Cecilia burst into laughter.
"I did it!" Angela burst into laughter too, her voice tangling with Cecilia’s in a giddy harmony.
The two squealed in pure, childish joy.
"AaaaaAAaaaAAhhAAHaAH!"
The sound echoed off the marble pillars and drifted into the carefully manicured hedges, startling a pair of doves from their perch.
Ah, such was the kind of sound the palace walls rarely heard, completely unbecoming of a princess and a mystery woman in a veil.
Angela’s servants exchanged wide-eyed glances from their posts along the colonnade. They had served the princess for years, had seen her charm and scheme and seduce her way through the deadliest courts in the empire, but they had never seen her like this.
All because they didn’t know that the veiled woman laughing with her was Cecilia Araceli, the former Saintess, now walking the world as Lady Sees, Luna of the Black Wolf King.
CLAP!
Angela and Cecilia high-fived with enough force to sting their palms, then collapsed back into their chairs at the tea party table, still giggling and giddy, their mood incandescent.
"I think it’s thanks to you, truly," Angela said, catching her breath. "He had still been stubborn until you first visited me in the dungeon."
"Really?! I didn’t mean that!" Cecilia straightened, genuinely surprised.
So the change in Stevan’s heart had come from her arrival? That couldn’t be right.
"That can’t be," Cecilia shook her head. "It should still be because of you!"
"I swear it’s not," Angela said. "Girl, do you remember how he let me out when we found out your husband’s bones would have been forged into weapons? He let me out because of you."
Cecilia looked at Angela through the veil, her blue-green-grey eyes soft and thoughtful. She remembered that day, the terror and the fury still embedded in her own bones. The way Angela had moved out of the dungeon, breaking her own rules to just hold her in her embrace...
But still—no.
The seed of change had not been planted by Cecilia. She was sure it had already been there, waiting and buried in the hard earth of Stevan’s devotion.
"I think it’s not me," Cecilia said gently, reaching across the table to take Angela’s hand. "It’s because you truly worried about me. That’s what moved him."
Angela’s eyes widened.
"You showed genuine, sincere worry for someone else. Perhaps it made him realize that you’re human, too." Cecilia smiled, and even through the veil, the warmth of her eyes reached Angela like sunlight.
Angela scoffed, but her eyes were wet. "And all the sincerity I showed him didn’t matter?!"
Cecilia burst into laughter again. "Men are like that. Sometimes they don’t respect or clearly see the feelings offered to them, and they need to be reminded through someone else that those feelings exist."
"What?!" Angela spat, half-laughing, half-affronted.
"I have three husbands. Trust me," Cecilia said, rolling her eyes beneath the veil.
Angela’s return from the dungeon this time carried enormous significance.
Even though nothing had been formally confirmed between her and Stevan, no confessions and no declarations, Cecilia could see that their relationship had shifted. It was no longer just lust, power, and control.
If it hadn’t changed, Angela would still be down there in the dark, too stubborn to leave.
"I told him everything about what I did and why when I found out you ’died.’ I cried in front of him," Angela said, her voice quieter now. She looked up at the sky, her expression faraway, and sighed. "I truly thought you had died, you little bitch..."
"I’m sorry, Gigi..." Cecilia truly regretted that Angela had to go through that. At the time, this woman would have been the only one who sincerely grieved her the most, left to mourn alone in a cage.
The thought of it... Angela, trapped in that cold, dark dungeon, hearing the news of Cecilia’s death and being unable to do anything but weep against the stone, made Cecilia’s chest ache.
"I’ll start clearing my name now. And as you know, my brother brought me out using the special reason that only I can catch our father’s killer," Angela said, her tone shifting from playful to serious.
Cecilia nodded. "You have made your choice."
She didn’t need to ask who they were planning to blame for the Emperor’s death. But she did wonder, if the people they chose now were different from the ones chosen in the world before Ruby’s regression, would Ruby become suspicious?
Ruby had already suspected Damon in the first place. But Cecilia was certain that even in that past life, it hadn’t been Damon who had done it. It must have still been Ivy.
Ivy had wanted to replace Ruby with Lilyca. That goal must have existed even in the past life. Killing the Emperor and placing Damon on the throne would have helped immensely, regardless of how their relationship had looked in that world.
Cecilia couldn’t guess what kind of relationship Ivy and Damon had in that timeline, but she knew those two held deep affection for each other, no matter the shape. Love like that didn’t simply vanish between worlds.
Well, even if Ruby was suspicious of the differences now compared to her past life, the fact that she still thought it was Damon meant she hadn’t looked closely enough in the past life anyway. Ruby wasn’t that smart.
Cecilia finally set the worry down.
"When are you planning to make things clear with Stevan?" Cecilia asked, steering the conversation toward lighter, if only slightly lighter, waters.
Angela smiled, but it was a strange, sad smile. "Do I even have a say in this? I’m the one who loves more. He holds power over me."
"The one who loves more holds more power," Cecilia said, her voice sharpening beneath the veil. "You dared to love more, so you’re the stronger one." She glared, and even through the silk, the force of it made Angela blink. "Never forget that."
"Goddamnit, you always make me feel good," Angela hissed, shaking her head, and Cecilia chuckled at the flustered reaction. "Don’t worry about me. Worry about my stupid brother instead."
Cecilia looked at her and saw that Angela truly was worried about her brother.
"Did you know Ivy Cassia visited him last night?" Angela asked.
Cecilia gasped, her veil fluttering. "No fucking way!"
The two leaned in, and just like that, the tea party dissolved into pure gossip.
Giggles and sharp, short laughs, accompanied by dramatic gasps colored the snow-filled garden, drifting up into the pale winter sky like smoke.
The servants, still hovering at the edges, exchanged another round of bewildered glances.
But neither woman noticed. They were too deep in the time-honored tradition of women everywhere, dissecting the romantic disasters of the men they loved, one scandalized whisper at a time.
