Chapter 477: Chapter 238: Massive Merit

The Wang Family’s forbidden area.

Hauling Wang Xiongying, Wang Xuanjiu entered the courtyard. He cut straight through the corridors to the deepest part of the yard, arriving before a cliff face near the Short Mountain.

He paused briefly before a giant boulder and pressed a protrusion on its surface. The boulder rotated with a low hum.

The stone wall behind the boulder slowly moved, revealing a passage about ten feet high.

Instantly, an overpowering stench of blood poured out from the passage.

As Wang Xuanjiu smelled the bloody air, a fanatical look crossed his face.

He strode into the passage and casually activated the mechanism. The stone wall moved again, sealing the entrance.

Anyone looking from the outside would only see a bare stone wall, with no way of discovering the passage.

As the passage closed, the light vanished. A faint, blood-red glimmer emanated from the far end of the tunnel.

Wang Xuanjiu did not light a lamp, simply continuing his slow walk forward. The stench of blood grew stronger the deeper he went.

After about a few dozen yards, the passage came to an end. Wang Xuanjiu turned right and stepped onto a stone staircase.

He followed the stairs spiraling downward for about ten minutes, heading deep underground into the heart of the mountain.

Before him lay a stone chamber, several dozen yards wide. Bonfires burned around the room, casting a shimmering, emerald-green light.

The fuel for the fires was, shockingly, piles of human bones.

In the middle of the chamber was a raised platform, upon which lay several figures dressed in the uniforms of Hospital Martial Artists.

They were none other than the Wang Family’s Bone Forging Realm Hospital Martial Artists who had gone with Wang Xiongying on the demon-slaying mission.

Their breathing was shallow and their eyes were glazed over. A small cut had been sliced into each of their wrists.

Crimson blood trickled out, dripping into the porcelain jars below with a soft, steady patter.

Wang Xuanjiu channeled his energy and gave a sharp jolt. Every bone in Wang Xiongying’s body shattered with a series of sickening CRACKS. The sheer agony shocked him awake, and he let out a piercing scream.

Wang Xuanjiu ignored him, casually tossing him onto the platform before turning to retrieve a porcelain jar from beside the wall.

The excruciating, bone-deep agony actually shocked Wang Xiongying back to a moment of clarity.

"Ancestor..."

Wang Xiongying tried to call out, but the sound died in his throat, turning into a series of choked whimpers.

Wang Xuanjiu had already shattered his jaw. His earlier scream was an involuntary reaction, his muscles contracting from the pain and forcing his broken jaw open.

But actually forming words was now impossible.

Horror washed over Wang Xiongying. His eyes widened, a storm of fear, confusion, and disbelief raging in his mind.

Then Wang Xuanjiu gently sliced open his wrist, collected some of his blood, and drank it down in one gulp right before his eyes. All those emotions curdled into the blackest despair.

...

「Several days later.」

Linji City Inner City, Demon Suppression Department.

The Merit Exchange on the second floor of the Demon Suppression Tower was packed with Purple-clothed Guards, all there to redeem their Merits.

During the recent demon scourge, nearly every Purple-clothed Guard had left the city with a Demon-slaying Team and earned a considerable amount of Merit.

While out on the mission, dedicated personnel had recorded each Purple-clothed Guard’s contributions, but those were only rough estimates.

Assessing the grade of various Demon Beast Materials, calculating their exact Merit value, and determining how to distribute the rewards all took a great deal of time to tally and verify.

The final tallies had just been posted, and every Purple-clothed Guard had rushed over at the first possible moment.

In the words of the assembled Guards: "When it comes to claiming Merits and cashing them in for rewards, the sooner the better!"

Leaving the city to slay demons was, of course, an extremely dangerous business, and casualties were inevitable.

This campaign was no exception. In fact, the casualties were far higher than in previous operations.

Even Vice Director Liu Hong, a master at the peak of the Bone Marrow Cleansing Realm, had fallen in the Great Wilderness Mountain Range.

Furthermore, a Chief Level Purple-clothed Guard, Wang Xiongba, had gone missing during the campaign, his whereabouts still unknown.

Other Golden Pattern and Ordinary Purple-clothed Guards had also been killed or wounded.

Many of the Purple-clothed Guards who had come to claim their Merits were still nursing injuries.

But that clearly did nothing to dampen their excitement about collecting their rewards!

They had all arrived early, gathering in twos and threes to chat excitedly, compare notes, boast, and show off!

"Brother Zhang, how much Merit did you rake in this time?" a Purple-clothed Guard with his left arm in a thick bandage asked his crutch-leaning colleague.

The Purple-clothed Guard named Zhang chuckled. "Of course, we won’t know the exact amount for a little while."

"But, I was with Young Master Jiang’s squad this time, and we killed a ton of Demon Beasts. I’ve got to have over a thousand Merits, maybe even two thousand!"

"Whoa! Two thousand Merits? You could trade that for four Low Grade Muscle Strengthening Pills, couldn’t you?" the bandaged guard exclaimed.

"It’s decent," Guard Zhang said lightly, unconsciously puffing out his chest. He then asked,

"Right, you were with the Shen Family’s Demon-slaying Team, weren’t you? How’d you make out?"

"I don’t know the exact number, but it should be around two or three thousand," the bandaged guard said with a grin.

"Two... two or three thousand?" Guard Zhang’s eyes suddenly shot wide open.

The bandaged guard chuckled. "Heh, I just got lucky, didn’t I? I was following the ’Sun-Shooting Divine Arrow,’ Elder Liu Yongzhen, and we slayed a bunch of Demon Beasts."

"Then Patriarch Shen and Vice Director Xue showed up, and we killed hundreds of Demon Beasts just by following in their wake."

"Even though I was mostly just running support and only got a few to a dozen Merits per kill, we took down so many Demon Beasts that it just added up!"

"That’s true," Guard Zhang nodded, then shook his head and sighed softly.

"A shame. Our team killed a lot of Demon Beasts too, but we had too many people, so everyone’s individual share of Merits was much smaller than yours."

"I probably didn’t get *that* much more than you. A thousand extra Merits at most," the bandaged guard said with a cheerful laugh.
