A Name Worth Remembering
The drive back to her apartment was quiet.
Ophelia replayed every moment of the evening in her mind.
The Ashford estate was exactly what she had expected—wealthy, influential, and carefully guarded. Every smile had seemed rehearsed, every conversation measured.
Except Elena.
The elderly woman had welcomed her with such warmth that it almost felt... genuine.
That unsettled Ophelia the most.
She had learned long ago that not every member of a powerful family shared the same heart.
As she unlocked her apartment door, her expression changed.
The warmth vanished.
She was no longer Ethan's dinner guest.
She was an investigator.
She removed her heels and walked straight to the study.
A large corkboard covered one wall.
Photographs.
Newspaper clippings.
Maps.
Timelines.
Notes connected by thin red strings.
At the center was a single photograph of April.
"I'll find the truth," Ophelia whispered.
She picked up a marker and wrote a new heading.
ASHFORD FAMILY
Underneath, she listed the names she knew.
Elena Ashford – Grandmother.
Kind. Observant. Appears genuine.
Richard Ashford – Ethan's father.
Quiet. Difficult to read.
Celeste Harrison – Stepmother.
Always watching.
Always calculating.
Finally, she wrote:
Nathan Ashford
A name.
Nothing more.
No photograph.
No information.
Just a name Ethan had mentioned during dinner.
"My brother travels so much that it's difficult to keep track of him."
Ophelia stared at the name for several seconds.
"Where were you... when April died?"
The following morning...
Ethan called.
"Good morning."
She smiled despite herself.
"You sound unusually cheerful."
"I am."
"And why is that?"
"Because I was hoping you'd agree to have lunch with me."
She laughed softly.
"Is that a question or a carefully disguised demand?"
"A request."
"I suppose I can spare an hour."
"Perfect. I'll pick you up at one."
As the call ended, Ophelia caught herself smiling.
She quickly shook her head.
"Stay focused."
Feelings were dangerous.
They clouded judgment.
She knew that better than anyone.
At exactly one o'clock, Ethan arrived.
Instead of taking her to an expensive restaurant, he drove to a quiet café overlooking a botanical garden.
"You brought me here?" she asked.
He looked slightly embarrassed.
"I figured after last night's formal dinner, somewhere peaceful would be better."
She looked around.
Families laughed together.
Children chased butterflies.
An elderly couple shared tea beneath a flowering tree.
For a moment...
Life felt normal.
"You were right," she admitted.
"I like it here."
As they talked over lunch, Ethan asked, "Can I ask you something?"
"You just did."
He laughed.
"Fair enough. What's one thing people always misunderstand about you?"
Ophelia paused.
How could she answer that?
That she had spent years living under classified identities?
That she had buried friends whose names could never be spoken?
Instead, she simply said,
"They think I'm distant."
"And are they wrong?"
"I just take time to trust people."
Ethan nodded.
"I can wait."
The sincerity in his voice caught her off guard.
For the first time in a long while...
Someone wasn't trying to earn her trust.
He was willing to deserve it.
As they left the café, a black luxury sedan rolled slowly past.
Inside, a man wearing dark sunglasses glanced toward them.
His eyes lingered on Ophelia.
Then the car continued down the road.
He picked up his phone.
"I've found her."
The voice on the other end asked,
"Is she suspicious?"
"Not yet."
He looked through the rear window as Ethan opened the car door for Ophelia.
"But she's getting closer to the Ashfords."
The call ended.
Miles away, the man smiled faintly.
For the first time in over a year...
Someone had stepped onto the same path that April once walked.
And he intended to find out why.
