The Missing Page

The birthday celebration lingered in Ophelia's mind long after she returned home.

Elena's warmth.

Ethan's quiet smiles.

Nathan's watchful eyes.

And the young boy in the old family portrait.

She had learned something important during her years in the Agency.

Every family had a story.

The Ashfords were no exception.

The next morning, Ophelia unlocked the small fireproof box beneath her bookshelf.

Inside were the pieces of April's life.

The diary.

The sketch.

The photographs.

The anonymous note.

She carefully opened the diary again.

This time, she wasn't looking for hidden compartments.

She was looking for patterns.

As she slowly turned each page, something caught her attention.

The page numbers.

Twenty-six...

Twenty-seven...

Twenty-eight...

Then...

Thirty.

She stopped.

Page twenty-nine was gone.

Not torn accidentally.

Removed with precision.

Whoever had taken it had used a sharp blade, leaving only a thin strip near the binding.

Ophelia traced the edge with her fingertip.

"It was removed on purpose."

She immediately called Anonymous.

"You found something."

"A missing page."

Silence.

Then...

"Which one?"

"Twenty-nine."

Anonymous didn't speak for several seconds.

When he finally did, his voice was calm.

"Don't try to guess what was on it."

"I'm not."

"I'm going to find out."

A faint chuckle came through the phone.

"I expected nothing less."

Later that afternoon...

Ophelia returned to the university library.

The elderly librarian smiled as she approached.

"Back again?"

"I'm afraid so."

"I need one more favor."

"If I can help, I will."

"I'm looking for student publications from the year April was enrolled."

The librarian adjusted her glasses.

"We have them in the basement archives."

"It may take a while."

"I'll wait."

An hour later...

Stacks of old student magazines covered the reading table.

Most were filled with campus news and club activities.

Then one issue caught her eye.

The cover featured the headline:

SPRING ARTS FESTIVAL – A RECORD YEAR

She flipped through the pages.

Photographs.

Award winners.

Volunteers.

Then...

A group photo.

April stood in the front row.

Smiling.

Happy.

Ophelia's heart tightened.

It was one of the few pictures where her sister looked truly carefree.

She smiled sadly.

"You were trying so hard..."

As she turned the page, a handwritten note slipped from between the magazine sheets.

It wasn't part of the publication.

Someone had tucked it inside years ago.

The faded handwriting read:

"Meet me at the Annex after rehearsal. Come alone."

No name.

No signature.

Just those words.

Ophelia carefully placed the note into an evidence sleeve.

Another clue.

Another unanswered question.

Across campus...

Nathan stepped out of his car after attending a meeting with the university board.

As he crossed the courtyard, he paused.

For reasons he couldn't explain...

His eyes drifted toward the abandoned Fine Arts Annex in the distance.

A strange feeling settled over him.

He had been there before.

He was certain of it.

But he couldn't remember why.

That evening...

Anonymous sat in a dimly lit room, studying a digital scan of the engraved pen.

His computer finally produced a result.

Limited Edition.

Commissioned twelve years ago.

Twenty-five pieces produced.

He leaned closer.

Then his expression changed.

One of the registered buyers...

Carried a surname he knew all too well.

Ashford.

Anonymous slowly leaned back in his chair.

"So..."

"The Ashford family really is connected."

But connected...

Didn't necessarily mean guilty.

He reached for his encrypted phone.

Then stopped.

"No."

"Not yet."

Some truths...

Were more dangerous when discovered too soon.
