Beyond Reality : the beginning of the end : Ethan path
Chapter 20 - The First MissionEthan was standing beside the hospital bed while Lian prepared to return home.
Trevor stood in front of him, watching him for a few moments before speaking.
“Could I have some attention? There’s something you need to know.”
Ethan looked at him with little interest.
“What?”
Trevor said:
“I’m one of the leaders of this organization.”
Ethan gave him a cold look.
“And?”
Trevor continued.
“One of the leaders. The organization isn’t owned by a single person, and there isn’t one president who makes every decision.”
He pointed toward the door.
“We have several branches, each with its own duties and members. There are also other groups of gifted individuals working with us.”
Then he looked directly at Ethan.
“But your group is different.”
Ethan didn’t seem particularly interested.
“Technically speaking, your powers have no clearly defined limits. That makes your group different from most other gifted individuals.”
Trevor studied his reaction.
“But the strangest thing is how casually you treat all of this.”
His eyes remained on Ethan.
“You’re some of the most dismissive people when it comes to this whole situation.”
Ethan asked:
“Is that a problem?”
“Not necessarily.”
Trevor sighed.
“But when a person is confronted with the true reality of this world, most people don’t react the way you do.”
His voice became more serious.
“Most candidates who tried to obtain special weapons of their own died while searching for them.”

He looked toward Lian before continuing.
“That’s why there isn’t another complete team of candidates like yours. You’re lucky to have found your place among them.”
That sentence was supposed to matter.
But Ethan wasn’t listening to all of it.
His attention was on Lian.
She was getting ready to leave.
“Are you ready?”
Trevor looked at him.
For a few seconds, he said nothing.
It was obvious Ethan hadn’t given him the attention he had expected.
“Forget it.”
Ethan looked back at him.
“What?”
“Nothing.”
Before either of them could continue, the door opened.
Adrian walked in.
He was wearing ridiculously tight clothes, and his pose was even more exaggerated.
He raised his arm in front of his face.
“Don’t worry, the hero has arrived!”
Ethan looked him up and down.
“What are you wearing?”
Adrian placed a hand on his chest.
“A superhero costume.”
A voice came from behind him.
“You look more like a long, skinny sausage.”
Adrian turned around.
Clark was standing there with a mocking smile.
“At least I’m trying to be a hero.”
Clark smirked.
“A superhero, huh? A hero who steals and lies to his friends.”
Before the two could start arguing, a chicken landed on Trevor’s head.
Everyone froze.
Trevor slowly looked upward.
“Is... that a chicken?”
The chicken looked around.
Then its body began to change.
Its feathers gradually disappeared, and its shape transformed before their eyes until it became a girl.
Trevor lost his balance and fell to the floor.
The girl looked at him.
“Oh.”
Ethan stared at the scene.
“I told you she would turn into a chicken.”
Trevor lifted his head from the floor.
“I know.”
He quickly stood up and looked at everyone.
“Shut up.”
Ethan said:
“Do you understand how I feel now?”
Trevor gave him a narrow look.
“This isn’t about that.”
The girl returned to her normal form and stood beside them as if Trevor’s fall had never happened.
It turned out that this girl was Alex, the chicken who had eaten the chicken soup.
Trevor addressed the two of them.
“I have a mission for you.”
Ethan finally paid attention.
“Surveillance, wiretapping, espionage, and information gathering.”
He looked between Ethan and Alex.
“I want you two to work as a team.”
Ethan stopped.
His first thought was to refuse.
Then he looked at Alex.
He didn’t want to reject the idea in front of her in a way that might make her feel insulted.
“Alright, I can—”
“No.”
Ethan stared at her.
“What?”
Alex answered calmly:
“I refuse.”
“You refuse to work with me?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
She looked at him for a moment.
“Because you’re too impulsive.”
Ethan said nothing.
“Surveillance and investigation require someone who can wait, observe details, and avoid acting on the first feeling that comes to mind.”
Ethan lowered his eyes slightly.
Memories from the past few days began running through his mind.
The auction.
Adrian.
The test.
Clark.
Lian.
He had to admit that she wasn’t entirely wrong.
Trevor added:
“Put up with him for a while. Maybe he’ll grow up.”
Ethan looked at him in disbelief.
“Even you?”
Trevor offered no response.
Ethan remained silent for a moment before asking:
“Fine... when does the mission start?”
“Soon.”
“And who are we watching?”
Trevor’s expression changed.
“We’re kidnapping a dwarf.”
Ethan raised his head.
“A dwarf?”
“Yes.”
Trevor continued:
“He’s a lieutenant close to one of the big heads on the side we’re monitoring. If we want to reach that person, this dwarf may be the right path. Alex will take his form and get us inside.”
Ethan asked:
“What do we need to know about him?”
“Not much.”
Trevor looked at him.
“We know he’s a hybrid.”
“A hybrid of what?”
“Half deer.”
Ethan raised an eyebrow.
“And half shapeshifter.”
Trevor made sure Ethan was listening.
“I want you to understand the difference between the two.”
He continued:
“Shapeshifters are human-like creatures capable of transforming into massive beasts. The closest example would be werewolves. But a shapeshifter doesn’t necessarily have to be a wolf. There are different breeds and forms.”
Trevor turned toward Lian.
“As for hybrids, they are creatures who are naturally half-breeds, like Lian.”
Ethan looked at Lian.
Then he turned back to Trevor.
“So this person is both?”
“Exactly.”
“Do we know how strong he is?”
“No.”
“Great.”
Ethan looked at Alex.
She was still watching him with an unconvinced expression.
“So my first mission is to kidnap a dwarf in order to track a half-deer, half-shapeshifter, alongside a girl who doesn’t want to work with me.”
Alex answered:
“That’s an accurate description.”
Ethan sighed.
“I’m starting to understand why there isn’t a single leader in this organization.”
Clark laughed from behind them.
Trevor remained silent for a moment before saying:
“That’s what keeps things interesting.”
Ethan looked at everyone.
Then he muttered:
“That’s what worries me.”
