Beyond Reality : the beginning of the end : Ethan path
Chapter 8 - The WeaponAt ten o'clock in the morning, Ethan in his office.
He couldn't get anything done.
The files open before him no longer mattered. Since Blackwood had left, all he could think about was Trevor's offer.
A group of humans with superhuman abilities.
Absolute freedom.
Non-human beings living in the same world.
And weapons he knew nothing about.
It was more like a secret society than an ordinary organization. No government, no institution, no clear rules.
And that was precisely what worried him.
If they had this power, what was stopping any of them from doing whatever they wanted?
And most importantly...
What were the requirements for joining?
Was ability alone enough?
Or was there something Trevor hadn't told him?
Ethan rehearsed his thoughts for the tenth time, then leaned back in his chair.
At that moment, he felt a hand on his shoulder.
"Good morning."
Ethan jumped and fell off his chair. — Damn it!
Trevor stood beside him, looking at him in surprise.
— Are you okay?
Ethan stood up and returned the chair to its place.
— Don't come in like that again.
— I came in through the door.
— I didn't hear you.

— I was thinking.
Trevor sat down at the desk as if nothing had happened.
— About what?
Ethan sat down again.
— About you.
— That's to be expected.
— You're a group without clear rules. No one protects you, no one holds you accountable, and yet you possess abilities that can make some of you more dangerous than any ordinary person.
He paused.
— So I assumed there was a requirement for joining besides simply having a talent.
Trevor didn't answer immediately.
He seemed to weigh up how much he should say.
Then he took out a black card and placed it on the desk.
— There are indeed requirements.
Ethan held up the card.
It only had a small code he didn't recognize.
"What's this?"
"A financial account."
"How much is in it?"
"There's no limit."
Ethan looked up at him.
"Are you serious?"
"Money isn't something we care about much."
"You guys seem to have a very different definition of 'money'."
Trevor took out a small device and placed it next to the card.
"You'll need this too."
Ethan turned it over in his hands.
"What does it do?"
"It emits a special light that can knock someone unconscious."
Trevor pressed a small button, and a faint light appeared for a second and then disappeared.
"And it can be set to affect memory."
Ethan put the device back on the desk.
"Why would I need something like this?"
"Because you'll be going into places where an ordinary person can't safely enter."
Ethan didn't like the answer, but he didn't argue.
"You said there are conditions."
Trevor nodded.
— Right.
He took his pocket watch from his coat and placed it on the table.
Ethan recognized it immediately.
It was the watch he used to stop time.
— Each of us needs a special weapon.
— A weapon?
— Not just any weapon.
Trevor opened the watch.
— This is part of my ability.
He closed it.
— And Clark has his scythe.
Ethan remembered the scene in front of the hotel.
The black scythe.
The owner who vanished right in front of him.
— The harvest scythe.
— Yes.
Ethan asked:
— And how does someone get a weapon like that?
— Some weapons are taken by force. Their previous owner might be a mythical creature, a guardian, or something else that simply can't be named.
— And some?
— Contracts.
Ethan understood.
— Magical contracts.
— Exactly. An agreement between the owner of the talent and another entity, each with their own terms.
Ethan remained silent for a moment.
—And me?
—I'm not sending you to search for a mythical creature.
Trevor took out a small piece of paper and placed it in front of him.
—There's an auction in the coming days.
Ethan read what was on it.
He found no title, just a set of symbols and a specific time.
—What will be sold there?
—Weapons.
—Humans?
—No.
Ethan looked up.
—Elf-made.
This time, Trevor didn't hide his smile.
—Some of them are very powerful. And you might find something that suits you.
—And maybe?
—A weapon doesn't care who pays the most.
Ethan understood that this wasn't going to be just an ordinary auction.
He put the paper back on the table.
—And what about my identity?
—What about it?
—If you go into a place full of the creatures you talked about, they'll know I'm human.
Trevor took the black card again, then handed it back to him.
—Not with this card.
Ethan flipped it over.
—What does it do?
—It hides your human scent.
Ethan remained silent.
—Their scent can detect humans?
—Some can. Some rely on their senses, some on magic, and some have other methods.
He pointed to the card.
—This prevents most of them from easily recognizing you.
—“Most of them?”
—Nothing is completely guaranteed in our world.
Ethan kept the card in his pocket.
Then he returned to the question that had been on his mind since yesterday.
—Trevor.
—Yes?
—Why me?
Trevor didn't answer directly.
He walked toward the door, then stopped.
—Because your ability isn't ordinary.
He turned to face him.
—And most importantly, you haven't yet discovered how far this can go.
Then he left.
Ethan was left alone.
He looked at the card in his hand.
Then at the paper with the auction information.
He realized that the case he'd started by observing a homeless man was now leading him into a whole world he never knew existed.
And for the first time since he'd begun the investigation...
Ethan wasn't the one chasing the truth.
The truth was beginning to come closer to him.
