Chapter 2546: Chapter 2538: Annihilation (Part 1)
The incursion of two high-level swarms drew intense attention from the military.
However, with battlefields everywhere, the forces the military could mobilize were limited. Even a few warships that had just entered port for rest were dispatched to intercept.
Unfortunately, the swarm’s incursion this time was extremely determined. General Level insects cruised outside the main swarm, densely packed, forming an effective shield—this was also a tactic of the insects, usually indicating that they would descend at any cost.
Otherwise, General Level insects would never be used as cannon fodder.
"Damn, it’s heading for Zuo Jing!" Very quickly, the military determined the swarm’s trajectory. The General Level insects were blasted into pieces, severed limbs falling toward Xingzheng Star like raindrops, but the swarm still drove toward the planet with rapid, unwavering force.
Zuo Jing City received the alert in an instant, but there wasn’t much they could do; they could only state that they would resist resolutely.
The military formally notified them, "Don’t hold back anymore. This may be your final line of defense."
"We just prepared a batch of Spirit Stones," the Zuo Jing side was actually confident, "If we fall before the Spirit Stones are used up, we hope the fleet will launch a saturation attack on us."
The Space Fleet could only guard the outer layer of Outer Space. Once the Insect Race entered the atmosphere, they could no longer launch effective attacks, as that might cause friendly fire on the Human Race. So only after Zuo Jing was completely overrun would the Space Fleet attack Human Race zones.
"You have Spirit Stones?" The Space Fleet considered this good news. "Then use them as much as possible. We believe that before you burn through the Spirit Stones, you won’t need our saturation attack... huh?"
The descent speed of the Insect Race was terrifying, but when the two swarms rushed into two masses of white fog, they actually failed to emerge for a time. "What’s with this white fog... what is it?"
Encountering some clouds and mist after entering the atmosphere was perfectly normal, but something that could slow the swarm was clearly not ordinary fog.
"Could it be... that same kind of white fog from Hesheng?" Someone thought of the anomaly at the production base yesterday.
"But... there are so many Commander Level insects," many still found it hard to accept. "Can that bit of fog really swallow them all?"
"Whatever it is, it’s a good sign," people in Zuo Jing also noticed the anomaly. "Turns out it’s really not far from Hesheng."
The reason they said "not far" was because the swarm’s landing accuracy was a bit off. That might be because they wanted to regroup after landing and then attack, but more likely it was because the rain cloud was too large, making precision positioning impossible for the insects.
The next instant, however, someone cried out, "Bad news! The swarm is out!"
Cries rose one after another, "Whoa, there are way fewer insects. Looks like that white fog is seriously lethal."
"Am I the only one who noticed that all the Commander Level insects are gone?"
Ren Tu and Ban Yu, who had secretly made their move, had never planned to wipe out the swarm in one go. Their main target was the Nascent Soul of the Insect Race. As long as they captured all the Nascent Souls, the remaining Golden Core Insects truly couldn’t escape Yi Jue’s Divine Skills.
Anyway, the big prize had already gone to those two; they couldn’t just let Yi Jue work for nothing, could they?
After the two swarms burst out of the white fog, together they numbered less than a hundred Golden Core insects, but they did not hesitate in the slightest and rammed straight into the rain cloud!
"I fucking love this white fog!" In Zuo Jing’s military intelligence room, someone smashed the table hard and roared.
"Damn, we finally don’t have to go all out," someone let out a long breath. "I really thought I was going to die in battle today."
"Even without the white fog, we could still hold. We’ve got enough Spirit Stones—it’s just a question of casualties," someone responded very rationally, but in the end still voiced a doubt. "That mysterious force... how did they pull this off?"
"I suggest we ask Commander Muller. Figuring this out is of huge significance for the defense of the whole star system."
Facing the landing Golden Core Insects, Yi Jue very decisively used Si Ganlin twice. "We’re going to be picking up insect corpses again. How about I go?"
"No, you stay and oversee things," Feng Jun objected. "Using Divine Skills drains you more, so leave the legwork to me... Good thing you insisted on guarding here, otherwise I would’ve already made a huge mistake."
"You just failed to think of it for a moment," Yi Jue comforted him. "Anyway, it’s only one night left. Tough it out and it’ll be over."
While Feng Jun was collecting corpses, the channels of Hesheng Base and Yuan Shu’s convoy blew up. Everyone was talking about how over thirty Commander Level insects had simply vanished above the base.
At this point, no one doubted the capabilities of the force backing Porsche anymore, but to wipe out that many insects in one swoop—wasn’t that a bit too brutal?
And it was easy to imagine that those General Level insects that managed to land wouldn’t be able to escape the killing intent hidden in that fine rain either.
Commander Muller was still at the base, but when he saw this scene, no matter how highly he regarded himself, he didn’t have the guts to provoke the other side. In response to the military’s demand, he could only give a wry smile and say, "I’d like to get a clear understanding too, but they refuse to make contact."
"I don’t want to hear excuses!" This was the advantage of being a superior—just issue orders. "No matter what means or methods you use, I only care about the result... execute the order!"
The chief of staff hasn’t made contact with them either, and now you’re ordering me? Muller was frantically complaining in his heart, but he could only reply respectfully, "The entire perimeter of the production base is covered in white fog right now... the kind everyone’s been talking about. I have no way to make contact with them."
"Then think of a way to make contact," the superior’s attitude was very clear. "Before nightfall, I want an answer."
"That’s impossible," Commander Muller had no choice but to state it plainly. "At dawn today, two scouts, eager to earn merit, charged into the white fog, and then... they disappeared."
Hearing this, the superior finally lost his composure. "So that means... they actually dared to lay hands on Federation soldiers?"
"This isn’t about daring or not," Commander Muller let out a faint sigh. "They warned us of the danger, but our people didn’t take it seriously. The locator devices on them also lost signal. They should have... already fallen."
The superior was silent for a while, then spoke in a deep voice, "Are you defying orders?"
"This isn’t defiance. Under these circumstances, it’s impossible for me to send soldiers over," Muller replied in a low voice. "So I can only go myself. If I disappear, just say I was killed by a stray bullet... I hope it won’t affect our cooperation with them."
"Stop right there!" the superior barked sharply. "Do you think I can’t bear the responsibility for a commander’s death?"
"I don’t think that," Muller answered in a deep voice. "I simply believe I shouldn’t issue this kind of order to my men, because... we really have already tried. As their commanding officer, I can’t let my own soldiers down."
The superior fell silent, then after a while finally spoke. "Then wait until the white fog disperses. You must make contact with them at the first possible moment."
"I guarantee the mission will be completed!" Muller replied very crisply, thinking to himself that he’d never send his own men to their deaths. Then he turned to He Runxian. "Lao He, up for a game of cards?"
It didn’t take Feng Jun long to finish collecting the corpses. When he came back, Yi Jue informed him of what she’d heard. "...These people actually still want to forcibly demand the secret method. Truly, ignorance makes one fearless."
Feng Jun, however, didn’t seem to care. "Cultivators aren’t much better than they are. In the end, strength is all that matters."
Yi Jue gave a cold snort. "I think we should just maintain the white fog until tomorrow morning and leave. If we don’t meet them, we don’t owe them anything."
Feng Jun thought for a moment, then still shook his head. "I think we should urge the Rain Prayer Array a bit more and make the rain heavier. Condensing that white fog must be quite a drain on your Spiritual Energy, right?"
Yi Jue shook her head. "It’s not a big deal. It’s just some manipulation of the rules of rainwater."
"That’s still a loss," Feng Jun nodded and said very straightforwardly, "Since that’s the case, let’s just use Spirit Stones to solve it. After all, this is a campaign in the Otherworld. For any problem Spirit Stones can solve, we should try to conserve our Spiritual Energy as much as possible."
Hearing this, Yi Jue simply inclined her head slightly and didn’t say anything more.
In the afternoon, the rain began to pour harder. Even the convoys transporting energy stones were complaining nonstop—poor visibility obviously affected their speed. Although electronic navigation was very capable, if it really worked perfectly, why would vehicles still need drivers?
The people of Zuo Jing City also noticed something was off, but they didn’t understand what this was supposed to mean, so they had no choice but to go to He Runxian again. "Director He, is this supposed to be rain or white fog?"
"You ask me, who am I supposed to ask?" He Runxian replied very bluntly, then stated in advance, "Let me tell you, I absolutely won’t be going out again in this kind of weather. They showed me respect by transporting so many supplies. I have no intention of becoming someone who repays kindness with ingratitude."
Faced with his refusal, the military in Zuo Jing really couldn’t get angry. In the end, civilians and soldiers are different. Some missions that are practically certain death can be forced on soldiers, but you can’t issue that kind of order to regular people.
So Commander Muller could only take a step back. "Then at least calling out to them through the rain and fog shouldn’t be a problem, right?"
"No," He Runxian shook his head and continued to refuse. "I have a bit of a rapport with them, but I can’t waste it on this... Since it’s shouting from a distance, you all can do that yourselves."
"We’d like to call out, but the moment the other side opens their mouth, it’s just ’Get lost,’" Muller said in frustration. He really was helpless...
However, by nighttime, He Runxian finally did come out to shout across, because there was an important issue. "Mr. Porsche, tomorrow during the day, could you make it rain in Zuo Jing City for the whole day?"
Just as he expected, there was not the slightest response from the other side. Clearly, they disdained to answer this question.
He Runxian waited for a while, then could only brace himself and continue explaining, "A lot of energy stones have been transported back, but when they’re allocated to other places, our transport capacity isn’t enough, and it’s not safe either. I ask that, for the sake of us all belonging to the Human Race, you lend us a hand."
After a while, a cold snort came from within the rain. "If I could make it rain every day, you wouldn’t even need to defend this place. You think there’s such a bargain in this world?"
