"Damn these 8 AM classes... ugh~"

Li Miao yawned, tossed his book onto the desk, and flopped onto his bed.

He seriously wondered if he had some strange illness that made him sleepy the moment class started. What’s more, it had started back in high school and still hadn’t gone away in college...

’Scary.’

He had planned to take a nap as soon as he got back to his dorm, but after a moment’s rest, Li Miao suddenly felt energized again.

With that thought, he rolled over, grabbed his virtual reality helmet, and put it on.

’Hehe, this is the life. I can rest and play games at the same time. So good...’

’Spirit Candle... activate!’

...

Light slowly bloomed in the darkness of his vision.

Just as Li Miao, who had reappeared before the Spirit Candle, was about to stand up, he suddenly saw Wax Oil rapidly spread from the Spirit Candle in front of him, coalescing into the tall figure of the Candlekeeper.

"...New Firelight, thank you for your recent efforts."

"You are now a qualified Candle Spirit Warrior."

"Now, I wish to ask a favor of you. I wonder if you have the time."

Luo Ge nodded slightly toward him and spoke in a deep voice.

As he spoke, he discreetly used Spirit Candle Power.

[Your approval rating with the Candlekeeper has increased slightly due to the large number of monsters you have recently eliminated. A special quest has been triggered.]

[You may choose to accept or decline this special quest.]

[Warning! This quest can only be triggered once per person!]

At first, Li Miao was a little confused, not knowing what the Candlekeeper was up to.

But when he saw the glaring system message—its font color was even different—his eyes went wide!

’A hidden quest!!!’

As a veteran gamer, Li Miao knew exactly how valuable this was!

"I do! I do! I absolutely have the time!"

"Just tell me what it is! I’ll give it everything I’ve got!"

Li Miao shouted excitedly, terrified that he might accidentally miss out on this hidden quest.

’This is a once-in-a-lifetime hidden quest!’

Seeing Li Miao’s reaction, Luo Ge couldn’t help but laugh to himself.

’This NPC identity sure is useful!’

Of course, he didn’t let it show on his face, which remained calm and world-weary. "Lately, the Poisonous Mist Birds on the island have been acting strangely. I hope you will eliminate as many of them as possible."

"If you can collect ten Long-winged Poison Feathers from Long-winged Poison Mist Birds along the way, bring them to me."

With that said, Luo Ge didn’t elaborate further. His figure gradually faded, turning back into Wax Oil and gathering back into the Spirit Candle, perfectly embodying the cool, aloof style of an NPC.

[Special Quest Accepted: Poisonous Mist Bird Disturbance.]

[Requirement 1 (Primary): Eliminate as many Poisonous Mist Birds as possible within three days.]

[Quest Reward: ?]

[Requirement 2 (Secondary): Collect ten Long-winged Poison Feathers (optional)]

[Quest Reward: ?]

Li Miao had never found two question marks to be so endearing!

He could almost see top-tier equipment and lavish rewards waving at him!

"Poisonous Mist Birds, huh?"

"Granddaddy’s fucking coming for ya!"

A boundless fighting spirit instantly erupted from Li Miao. With a roar, he charged out of the cave in a mad dash.

"..."

Inside the Spirit Candle, Luo Ge watched Li Miao, who was acting like he’d been shot full of adrenaline, and the corners of his mouth turned up slightly.

Before his Descent into this world, he had played his fair share of games. He had a pretty good idea of what players wanted.

In truth, this so-called "special quest" was secondary.

Luo Ge’s main goal was to use Li Miao to send a signal to the players: as long as they worked hard to kill monsters, they could raise their favorability with the Candlekeeper and receive hidden quests!

This way, a monster-killing trend would naturally emerge among the player base, and the amount of Wax Oil he obtained from them would rise accordingly...

Of course.

Luo Ge didn’t plan on getting something for nothing. If Li Miao did an outstanding job on this quest, he wouldn’t mind giving the kid a decent reward...

After all, the stronger the players, the more Wax Oil he would harvest...

...

Not long after Li Miao logged on.

Faraway logged on right after him. He, too, received the special quest from the Candlekeeper.

However, compared to Li Miao, Faraway appeared much calmer and less excited.

’So the Candlekeeper really does have a hidden favorability system...’

Faraway thought to himself.

His quest was the same as Li Miao’s: kill Poisonous Mist Birds and obtain ten Long-winged Poison Feathers from the Long-winged Poison Feather Birds.

And so, the two soon met up at the Poisonous Mist Birds’ gathering spot.

When Faraway arrived, Li Miao was being pecked by a flock of Poisonous Mist Birds, rolling around on the ground. He was covered in wounds and looked quite pathetic.

Without a word, Faraway summoned his Bone Fork. After a running start to build up power, the Bone Fork flew from his hand, leaving a sharp white streak in the air.

Bone Fork Throwing!

SWOOSH—

[You have slain a Poisonous Mist Bird]

[You have slain a Poisonous Mist Bird]

After accurately piercing one Poisonous Mist Bird, the Bone Fork continued on with undiminished force and skewered another.

Two birds with one fork!

"Faraway!" Li Miao, still rolling on the ground, was overjoyed to see the familiar figure.

"Brother Miao, same as always. You pull aggro."

Faraway said, getting straight to the point.

Then, he used his swift speed to quickly retrieve the Bone Fork.

Li Miao nodded emphatically. He then brandished his blade, rolling when he saw an opening and relying on his own tankiness to firmly hold the aggro of the flock of Poisonous Mist Birds.

The two had cooperated for a long time, so their teamwork and coordination were a given.

As for the Poisonous Mist Birds, it was unclear whether they were weakened by the Anchor Island or were just naturally weak. They were as fragile as paper, and their Attack Power wasn’t very high.

The only thing that gave the two of them trouble was the birds’ ability to fly.

Li Miao was clumsy and Faraway had a short attack range. Before, they would have had a really hard time dealing with this problem.

But the problem was solved handily after Faraway learned the Bone Fork Throwing Combat Skill, and his own accuracy was extremely high.

So, the only thing holding them back was the trouble of Faraway having to retrieve his Bone Fork...

In a short while, the two of them had completely wiped out a wave of Poisonous Mist Birds.

Faraway didn’t rush to kill the second wave. Instead, he called Li Miao over, and the two discussed the special quest.

"...Looks like this quest isn’t too rare after all. You can probably trigger it once your approval with the Candlekeeper reaches a certain level."

Faraway said.

Hearing this, Li Miao’s fiery excitement cooled a bit, but he was still very much looking forward to it. After all, they didn’t have any other quests to do at the moment.

"No idea when the new map will open up either..." At this, Li Miao couldn’t help but smack his lips. "Good thing we can still fish for fun, or else grinding monsters all day would get a little boring."

Faraway didn’t pay much mind to that, instead saying thoughtfully, "The Candlekeeper’s importance as an NPC is undeniable. It’s best we do this quest well and raise our favorability with him."

Li Miao completely agreed and was about to get up. "Alright, let’s get back to it!"

But Faraway stopped him. "Not so fast."

"Let’s make some preparations first."

"Otherwise, that Long-winged Poison Mist Bird might be difficult to handle."

As he spoke, Faraway pointed to the Fishman Bone Fork in his hand.

"Oh..." Li Miao wasn’t slow on the uptake. He immediately understood what Faraway meant and chuckled. "Looks like we have to go bully our Fish People buddies again..."
