Bizarre Voyage: Summoning The Fourth Crisis
Chapter 28: Mysterious Sea MonsterAs a veteran angler, Brother Yu was naturally very interested in heading out to sea.
Brimming with motivation, he tore through the Sand Worms for days, slaughtering several Sand Worm Kings. He then bought a raft in full and excitedly set out to sea with the Fine Meat Bait he’d saved up.
Brother Yu’s route on his Spirit Fire Raft was slightly different from Guagua’s.
He still encountered some strange, aggressive little monsters along the way, but they were no trouble for Brother Yu.
After sailing for a while, he found a stretch of sea he quite liked and began to fish, full of anticipation, hoping to reel in a big one.
At first, things were relatively normal.
The few fish he caught were a little on the small side, but Brother Yu was still quite happy.
That is, until he suddenly came up empty several times in a row, the Fine Meat Bait on his hook vanishing without a trace.
This made Brother Yu’s anger flare, and he swore he would find the culprit who was mooching his bait.
’Who does this guy think he is, stealing my bait?!’
’If you’re going to eat my bait, at least give me a proper bite!’
’You think you can just take it for free? I’ll send you flying!’
And so, by focusing all his attention, Brother Yu finally hooked the shameless "thief."
However, the thief didn’t seem to plan on surrendering without a fight. It even began to struggle.
Burning with rage, Brother Yu gave it his all, fighting to reel it in.
And then his rod snapped.
But that wasn’t the end of it. After the rod snapped, not only did the "thief" not flee, but it charged straight at Brother Yu, smashing his Spirit Fire Raft to pieces with a single sweep of its tail.
Without the protection of his Spirit Fire Raft, even with his superb combat skills, Brother Yu was powerless to turn the tide.
And so, he could only watch helplessly as the fish in his basket sank into the sea...
"That damn thing!"
Brother Yu gritted his teeth.
’If my rod had just snapped, that would have been one thing. It would just mean it wasn’t my time to land that big catch.’
’But what the hell was the point of knocking over my damn fish basket too?’
’This is intolerable, especially for an angler!’
’Revenge. I must get revenge!’
"..."
Seeing him burning with rage, Faraway and Li Miao exchanged a look.
"Did you get a good look at that thing?"
Faraway asked.
The quality of fishing rods made from Spirit Candles was already quite good. Anything that could snap one was definitely no ordinary creature; it could very well be some kind of wild boss.
What’s more, according to Brother Yu’s description, the thing had shattered a Spirit Fire Raft with its tail. It was terrifyingly strong.
Hearing Faraway’s question, Brother Yu calmed down a bit and recalled, "...Didn’t see it clearly. It was a black mass, seemed to have octopus-like tentacles and a big tail."
Brother Yu had died almost as soon as he hit the water, so he hadn’t gotten a very clear look.
’Black, octopus tentacles, a big tail...’
Li Miao’s eyelid twitched as he tried to piece these elements together in his mind.
’Forget it,’ he thought. He really couldn’t imagine what the creature actually looked like.
"Come with us, then," Li Miao said. "Let’s get your stuff back first."
Brother Yu nodded. The only reason he hadn’t immediately gone back for revenge was that his Spirit Fire Raft was also gone. He needed to buy a new one, but he was still a bit short on Wax Oil...
The three of them set out together, and with Brother Yu leading the way, they soon arrived at the spot where he’d wiped.
"The Wax Ash is over there."
Li Miao was sharp-eyed and spotted Brother Yu’s Wax Ash floating on the sea at a glance.
"I’ll take Brother Yu over. Faraway, you cover us," Li Miao said, drawing his Candlefire Scimitar.
Faraway nodded slightly, took out his Rapid Short Bow and a Poison Feather Arrow, and stood ready.
Li Miao’s Spirit Fire Raft carried Brother Yu slowly toward the Wax Ash...
Both of them were on high alert, constantly watching the surrounding water for any movement.
The Wax Ash drew closer and closer.
Just as Brother Yu was about to touch his Wax Ash...
A patch of inky blackness silently stained the water behind them.
BANG!
WHOOSH—
In an instant! The sound of the sea exploding and an arrow slicing through the air rang out almost simultaneously.
With a wet thud, the Poison Feather Arrow shot straight into the mysterious monster’s inky black tentacle.
The black tentacle reeled in pain, struggled violently for a moment, and then swiftly retracted, disappearing into the sea in the blink of an eye...
Li Miao reacted quickly as well, spinning around to slash with his scimitar, but he only hit empty air.
SLOSH—
The Spirit Fire Raft, still rocking on the ripples, was proof that what had just happened was no illusion.
"Damn it!"
Brother Yu had reacted faster than Li Miao, but he had only seen the tentacle struggle for a moment. Plus, he was unarmed, so he could only watch helplessly as the mysterious monster escaped.
After Brother Yu retrieved his weapons, Li Miao suddenly realized Faraway was gone!
"Faraway?!"
Li Miao’s heart skipped a beat. ’Don’t tell me Faraway got taken out just now without anyone noticing?’
’If even Faraway wiped, could this Sea Monster really be that ferocious?!’
Li Miao found it hard to believe.
But soon, Faraway’s figure surfaced in the water next to his own Spirit Fire Raft.
He vaulted onto his Spirit Fire Raft and shook his head slightly at the other two. "That thing fled to deeper waters."
Faraway hadn’t been dragged into the sea, of course; he had jumped in himself.
When his first strike failed to finish it, he had decisively dived into the water to prevent his Spirit Fire Raft from creating a blind spot.
However, the mysterious Sea Monster seemed extremely cautious, fleeing immediately after being injured.
This struck Faraway as unusual.
The monsters on Candle Island were all the extremely aggressive, almost mindless type.
The concept of "fleeing" didn’t exist in their minds; only killing the enemy or dying would end the fight.
But this mysterious Sea Monster had decisively chosen to flee after being wounded, making it completely different from the other monsters...
"So cunning."
Li Miao had realized this as well. It seemed this thing really was a boss.
"It runs to deeper water the second it gets hurt. How are we supposed to kill it? We can’t even find it. Sounds like a real pain-in-the-ass boss."
Li Miao said with a shake of his head after the three of them regrouped.
The protective range of their Spirit Fire Rafts wasn’t very large, which meant their combat effectiveness in the sea was severely limited.
Although the raft’s protection mitigated the effects of the water, it was still nowhere near as convenient as fighting on land.
Therefore, his past gaming experience told Li Miao that this was most likely an annoying, mechanics-heavy boss designed to frustrate players.
"It’s not like there’s no way to find it..."
Faraway said, looking thoughtfully at Brother Yu.
"What are you looking at me for?" Brother Yu was puzzled for a moment, but then an idea flashed in his mind. "You mean... the Fine Meat Bait?"
Li Miao smacked a fist into his palm. "That’s right! Wasn’t the Fine Meat Bait how Brother Yu ran into this thing in the first place? We can use it as bait for an ambush!"
"Let’s not rush," Faraway said, putting away his Rapid Short Bow. "The limitations of fighting at sea are too great, and we don’t have enough attack options. For now, let’s just mark this location and come back to it later."
"Let’s go scout the nearby waters first."
Faraway was perfectly calm.
This clearly wasn’t a monster they could easily deal with at their current stage.
If they failed and died at sea, even retrieving their Wax Ash would be a huge hassle.
"I guess that’s the only way for now." Although Brother Yu was frustrated, he had to agree. He had, however, already seared the memory of this creature into his mind...
