Chapter 89: 89: HE KNOWS.

"I never thought you’d make it here," Simon said. "I thought you never cared to attend activities like this at all."

"With June here, it’s impossible not to," Nyx replied, holding onto June firmly enough that June found himself somewhat confused. "So you don’t have to worry about him at all. I’m here."

Several students had their eyes on the scene, drinking and gossiping while watching to see what would happen.

Simon, however, had no intention of making a scene. He casually nodded with a smile as he looked at June. "I guess I’ll leave you two be, since you’re official partners."

"See you around, then. You can keep the suit for as long as you want," he added.

Nyx furrowed his brows and glanced at the suit draped around June. Clearly displeased, he removed it from June and handed it back to Simon.

"Here. Take it. You don’t have to worry." He practically shoved it into Simon’s hands before pulling out his own suit and wrapping it around June instead. "He’ll make sure of mine."

"..."

Simon stared at the scene, speechless. He clearly didn’t think highly of Nyx, but he kept his composure as he held onto his suit.

Forcing a smile, Simon said, "Okay. I’ll be off, then." He glanced at June. "See you around at home."

As he walked away, Nyx’s cold eyes remained fixed on him. He didn’t seem happy to see Simon there at all, especially with him being around June.

"You should stay away from him," June said, turning to Nyx. "Especially him. Don’t meet him if you can help it. He definitely doesn’t have good intentions."

June smiled at the jealous Nyx, unable to stop himself from finding the sight cute. "Are you jealous or something?"

"I’m just..." Nyx trailed off, unable to find the right words.

June casually smiled and reached out, patting him gently on the hair. "Cute."

He was simply happy to finally see Nyx again.

But as he looked at him more closely, June noticed a bruise around Nyx’s wrist. It didn’t look old. The mark was fresh enough for June to immediately suspect it had happened recently.

His smile slowly faded.

June quietly reached into Nyx’s energy and immediately sensed the instability within it.

Nyx appeared calm on the outside, but his emotional energy told a completely different story. Beneath that composed expression was a turbulent mess, his energy fluctuating between stability and chaos.

It was a deeply depressing emotional state, and June didn’t need a shaman to tell him why.

"Those jerky parents..." he muttered, fury lacing his voice.

"Huh? What did you say?" Nyx asked, raising an eyebrow.

June stared at him for a moment before forcing a smile. "Nothing..."

He figured Nyx would appreciate it if he pretended not to notice. Nyx had probably hidden it carefully, and June suspected he would be disappointed if he realized June had seen through him.

The thought alone shattered June’s heart.

Nyx didn’t deserve this.

Nyx ran a hand over June’s clothes. "What happened to you? Why the stain?"

June shook his head. "Nothing." He smiled. "I accidentally poured it all over myself. Silly me. I should’ve been more careful."

Nyx stared at him. June could tell he was skeptical of the answer, but Nyx eventually brushed it aside.

"It doesn’t matter," June said, glancing around the hall. "Since you’re already here, what would you like to do? Dance?"

June knew he would have to work on stabilizing Nyx’s energy, at least for tonight. More importantly, he wanted to put a genuine smile on Nyx’s face.

Nyx looked around at the dancers before turning back to him. "If you really want to dance... then maybe we could."

June immediately realized Nyx wasn’t in the mood to stay here.

He smiled. "Come to think of it, this place is boring. Let’s go somewhere fun."

Nyx stared at him. "Somewhere fun? Like where?"

June smiled and took Nyx by the hand.

Nyx stiffened, his heart fluttering at the warmth of June’s fingers wrapped firmly around his own.

He stared into June’s bright smile.

"Let’s go," June said. "Follow me."

And with that, he led Nyx out of the hall, hand in hand.

---

Silence engulfed the two of them in the washroom.

Kael stood there, staring at Ryan in complete shock and confusion. He questioned himself several times, wondering if he had heard correctly.

Did Ryan really say what he thought he heard?

"What... rubbish are you talking about?"

Ryan smiled as he turned toward the mirror. "You know exactly what ’rubbish’ I’m talking about."

He paused before adding, "So, for the sake of keeping that rubbish a secret, learn to keep your nasty personality to yourself."

Kael clenched his fist and slowly approached him.

"What do you know?"

He had a feeling this young brat knew far more than he should, and the thought suddenly frightened him.

Ryan smiled at him. "Why? Suddenly scared that I know more than you’d want anyone to know?"

Kael panicked but struggled to maintain his composure.

"Are you just bluffing to scare me?"

Ryan smiled. "I wish I were. Unfortunately, I know too much."

He sighed before continuing, "What a strange illness that is. An illness that makes someone’s energy so unpredictably unstable that they can fall from C-rank all the way to F-rank if they aren’t careful."

He tilted his head with a knowing smile.

"A strange illness that causes ranks and energy abilities to fluctuate. One that can supposedly be stabilized internally through intimacy and physical contact..."

His smile widened.

"Surely, I understand your need to sleep around with Guides to keep your energy fresh, nourished, and stabilized."

Ryan sighed as he washed and cleaned his hands in the sink before him.

"With such an illness, who am I to blame you? I can only sympathize with you."

A mischievous smile lingered on Ryan’s face, both tender and devious at once.

And for some reason, that very smile sent a shiver down Kael’s spine.
