THAT EVENING
XAVIER
By sunset, I had finally convinced myself that everything was fine. Well not fine. But manageable. I had survived the morning, I had survived avoiding the Emperor, I had survived locking myself in the kitchen for most of the day. I could survive one more evening. Right?
"Ding!" The blue screen appeared in front of me again.
"Oh no..."I sighed.
The system cheerfully displayed another message.
"DAILY TASK AVAILABLE: Create one new dessert using beans. Reward: +50 Cooking EXP Reward: random rare ingredient. Penalty for ignoring: None."The system said.
"That’s it?"I blinked.
"Correct."The system said.
"No affection mission?"I asked.
"Not at this time."The system said.
"You’re being awfully nice."I narrowed my eyes suspiciously.
"I encourage healthy work-life balance."A system said.
"I don’t trust you."I sighed.
"Understandable."The system agreed.
It was probably fine. Beans? I could do beans. That was normal. I walked into my private kitchen inside the chef’s quarters and looked through the storage room. Red beans are perfect.
"Bean paste..." I smiled. "Sweet red bean buns... no..." I rubbed my chin. "What about a baked bean filled pastry?"
Fresh butter, sugar, a little honey, a soft flaky dough.
"I can make this work."I nodded.
Soon the room filled with the sweet aroma of simmering red beans.
"You’re behaving normally today."I stirred them slowly until they became smooth.
"I am always normal." A system said.
"Liar."The system said.
The system didn’t answer. For once everything was peaceful. I hummed quietly while shaping the pastries. Maybe today would actually end quietly. Click. The kitchen door opened.
"..."
I froze.
"Please don’t be-"I thought seconds before warm arms wrapped around my waist.
"Your Majesty..."I closed my eyes.
"Hm."He said and sighed.
Lang Li rested his chin lightly near my shoulder as though this was the most natural thing in the world.
"You found my kitchen."I said.
"I did."He said.
"How? I went to my personal one."I said.
"I asked."Lang Li added.
"That’s somehow worse."I sighed.
His arms remained around me. I looked helplessly toward the ceiling.
"Your Majesty..."I began.
"Hm?"He asked.
"I am holding hot pastry."I said.
"I know."He smirked as he leaned closer.
Then he hugged me a little tighter.
"Your Majesty."I gasped.
"Hm?"He looked at me.
"Are you secretly part octopus?"I asked.
"No."He said.
"Then why do you keep attaching yourself to me?"I asked.
"I like it."He said calmly.
My brain blue screened harder than the system ever could. Inside my head I heard familar
"Ding! Emperor affection increased 5% to 6%."The system said.
"I DIDN’T DO ANYTHING!"I nearly dropped the pastry.
"You allowed the hug."A system said.
"I failed to escape the hug!"I refused.
"Acceptance has been recorded."A system repeated again.
"THAT IS NOT ACCEPTANCE!"I tried again.
"Who are you talking to?"Lang Li looked down at me.
"Myself."I said.
"You seem loud."He said.
"I am having an argument."I sighed.
"Who is winning?"He asked.
"Not me."I shook my head.
"I noticed."He smiled.
"I like him."The system practically giggled.
"I didn’t ask!"I groaned.
"They smell good."Lang Li’s eyes drifted toward the cooling pastries.
"They are supposed to."I said.
"I want one."He nodded at it.
"Fine..."I sighed. I picked up the warmest pastry and handed it to him.
He didn’t take it. Instead, he leaned forward and took a bite while I was still holding it.
My CPU caught fire as I stared bewildered at his sudden action.
"Your Majesty..."I began.
"Hm?"He asked.
"You have hands."I explained.
"I do."He nodded.
"You could have used them."I said.
"I preferred this."He grinned.
"Host’s blood pressure has increased significantly. Assessment: Understandable."Behind the blue screen, the system silently displayed another notification as I sighed in frustration.
"I can not believe it."I huffed.
Lang Li hand suddenly moved from my stomach to my jaw, his thumb tilting my face upward so he could look at me. Emperor’s eyes were dark, the pupils blown wide, catching the dim light of the kitchen.
"I think you know exactly what I came here for." He said, his voice dropping to a dangerous low level.
His body pressed harder against mine, grounding me against the marble counter. The kitchen was silent except for the heavy, uneven rhythm of his breathing.
"Your maj-" I gasped in surprise as I felt a lump pressing against my uniform. "My lord, what you-." Bites his lip as feels his hips thrust upwards again.
The thrust of his hips was more insistent now, a steady, driving pressure that left little room for denial.
"You are a beta." He whispered against my mouth, almost a question, but more like a justification. "Which means you don’t have to worry about the noise. No heats to manage. No pheromones to betray you."
His fingers tangled in the hair at the base of my neck, pulling my head back just enough to expose the line of my throat. He trailed his lips down that line, his tongue darting out to taste the salt of his skin. His hips drove upward again, firmer this time, pinning me more securely against the edge of the marble counter. The cold stone against her front contrasted sharply with the heat radiating from his chest behind me.
"What a good, chef."Emperor’s voice got lower with lust.
His grip on my shoulders suddenly loosened. For a heartbeat, neither of us moved. Then I heard a knock.
"Your Majesty?" Shen’s voice came from the doorway. "I have the reports you requested-"
The door slid open. Shen took one step inside and he froze. I froze.
"..."I started.
The Emperor slowly turned his head toward his captain of the guard. The kitchen became so quiet I could hear the soup simmering and Shen’s usually unreadable expression cracked for exactly half a second.
"I see."He said.
Lang Li immediately stepped back, creating several feet of distance between us as if nothing unusual had happened. His face was completely calm, too calm.
"I was inspecting the kitchen."He said.
"Of course, Your Majesty." Shen replied without changing his expression.
I was fairly certain he didn’t believe a single word. My knees finally chose that exact moment to stop cooperating.
"W-whoa-" I stumbled backward.
My foot caught the leg of a stool. The next thing I knew I landed on the floor.
"Ow." I sat there for a second, breathing hard and trying to convince my heart to slow down.
Lang Li looked down at me. For the briefest moment, genuine concern crossed his face.
"Wei."He said.
I looked up. He opened his mouth as if to say something, nothing came out. Instead, he silently turned around.
"Return to your duties." He said to Shen.
"Yes, Your Majesty."Shen nodded.
Without another word, Lang Li walked out of the kitchen. The door slid shut behind him. I remained sitting on the floor.
"What... just happened?"I stared down.
Shen stood there for another long moment before letting out an almost inaudible sigh.
"I will pretend." He said calmly. "That I saw nothing."
"I would appreciate that."I smiled.
"I imagine His Majesty would as well."Shen said.
He gave me a respectful bow and left. The instant the door closed, I flopped onto my back and covered my face with both hands.
"What did just happened?"I whispered to myself.
I looked down, and light lump in my uniform pants told me that my straight body reacted to him no matter what.
"I am straight, am I?"I asked the air, and thankfully nobody answered me back.
