Chapter 28: 28. A jealous kisses from emperor?

A FEW HOURS LATER

XAVIER

The banquet went far better than I expected. Every dish returned empty. The spicy fish, crystal dumplings, roasted duck, and lotus soup disappeared almost as soon as they reached the tables. When the servants finally brought out dessert, the hall was filled with satisfied smiles.

"Chef Wei."Hua Jin set down her spoon and looked directly at me.

"Yes, Miss Hua?"I asked.

"I have made my decision."She smiled brightly.

I suddenly had a bad feeling.

"I would like to invite you to our kingdom."She said cheerfully.

The hall became quiet.

"Our royal palace would gladly welcome a chef of your talent. You will have the finest kitchen, the best ingredients, and anything you desire."She contunied.

"Thank you for the generous offer..."I forced an awkward smile.

Before I could finish a chair scraped across the floor. Everyone turned as Lang Li had stood up. He walked straight toward me without saying a word.

"Your Majesty?" My heartbeat sped up.

He stopped beside me, then, in front of the entire banquet hall, he reached out and firmly took my hand. Not painfully, but with unmistakable determination.

"He is not leaving."His golden eyes met Hua Jin’s.

The hall fell completely silent, even Hua Jin looked surprised. The Empress Dowager hid a smile behind her teacup. Lang Li didn’t let go.

"He is my palace’s chef." His grip tightened ever so slightly. "And he is staying here."

I looked down at our joined hands. My brain had completely stopped working.

"Ding."The system appeared.

I didn’t even have the energy to complain.

"Protective behavior detected. Current Emperor Lang Li affection: 13%."The system said.

I wanted to disappear into the floor. I wanted to go home and hide. I should have known, one hand in front of the entire banquet hall. By sunrise, the entire palace had lost its collective mind. As I walked through the corridors carrying baskets of vegetables, whispers followed me everywhere.

"Did you hear?"A first one asked.

"His Majesty stood up himself."A second one added.

"He grabbed Chef Wei’s hand!"A lady smiled. "He refused to let the envoy take him."

"I heard he looked ready to declare war."A fourth one right behind me smirked.

"Nonsense."A man said, surprised.

"I saw it with my own eyes!"She repeated again.

I lowered my head. Please, just let me buy vegetables in peace.

"The Emperor has never done something like that before."A group of palace maids passed me, giggling.

"They say Miss Hua Jin nearly fainted."A second one said.

"I heard Chef Wei didn’t even realize what happened."A third one added.

"That part is true." I muttered.

That evening, after the envoy’s delegation finally departed, I had just finished cleaning the kitchen. I was exhausted, but seconds later, a servant hurried inside.

"Chef Wei."A servant said.

"Yes?"I asked.

"His Majesty requests tonight’s meal be delivered personally."A servant said.

"Personally?"I asked.

"Yes."A servant nodded.

Why did those words always sound dangerous? A few minutes later, I stood outside the Emperor’s private chambers with a tray in my hands. I took a deep breath and knocked.

"Enter."A voice said.

I stepped inside, the room was quiet. Lang Li sat by the window, the moonlight falling across his hair. I carefully placed the tray on the table.

"Your Majesty’s dinner."I said.

I turned to leave.

"Wait."I heard his voice.

"Yes?"I froze.

Footsteps slow and steady, they stopped directly behind me. Before I could react a hand caught my wrist. My breath hitched. In one smooth movement, Lang Li pulled me backward. My back met the wall with a soft thud. The tray rattled on the nearby table as I looked up.

He stood far too close. One arm rested against the wall beside my head, blocking my escape as his golden eyes never left mine.

"You were going to leave." His voice was calm.

"I... delivered your dinner."I said.

"You almost agreed."He said

"Agreed to what?"I asked, confused.

"To leaving."He said.

"Hua Jin’s invitation?"It took me a second to understand. "I declined."I said.

"You thanked her."He said.

"Because she was being polite."I said. "She already left."

His gaze searched my face as though trying to decide whether to believe me.

"I don’t like people trying to take what’s mine."Lang Li said.

"Your Majesty?"My heart skipped. "I s-should go."

"You go when I allow you to go."He said calmly, as his hands pinned me tighter to a wall.

"My lor- mhm?!" Makes a muffled gasp as he feels Emperor’s lips on mine.

Lang Li mouth crashed against mine with a sudden, violent hunger. It wasn’t a gentle kiss, it was a claim. His lips were firm and demanding, his tongue pushing past my teeth to taste, to dominate, to silence the stuttered protest. His free hand came up, fingers tangling deep into my hair, tilting my head back at an angle that forced me to take the kiss fully. The scent of cedar and cold metal flared, thick and suffocatingly Alpha in the small space between them. He broke the kiss just as abruptly as he had started it, leaving me breathless and trembling against the wall. Emperor’s forehead rested against mine, his breathing ragged, his eyes dark with a possessive fury that hadn’t quite settled.

"Don’t speak her name again." He rasped, his voice raw. "Not in this room. Not in my presence."

He didn’t move away. If anything, he pressed closer, his chest firm against mine, his weight pinning him more securely against the cold brick wall.

"The envoy left." He repeated, his voice dangerously low, "And yet you still bring her to my lips with your words. Do you have no sense of self preservation, servant?"

He reached down, his hand sliding from my hair to the collar of his shirt, gripping the fabric with a slow, bruising tightness. He leaned in until his lips were brushing against my ear, his voice barely more than a vibration.

"Tell me." He murmured. "Did she offer you anything? Jewels? Silk? A place by her side that isn’t here, at my feet?"

"N..no..." I gasped lightly in surprise at his touch.

Emperor’s grip on the collar tightened just enough to make my breath catch. He watched the way my throat moved with that small gasp, his eyes tracking the vulnerability like a man watching a flame flicker in the wind.

"No." He repeated, his voice dropping to a silkier, more dangerous register. "Good. Because she couldn’t give you what I can."

He released the collar, but his hand didn’t fall away. Instead, his palm slid upward, his thumb tracing the line of my collarbone with agonizing slowness. The heat from his touch was a stark contrast to the cold brick pressing into my back.

"You are mine for the duration of this night." Emperor said, his gaze locking onto mine with an intensity that felt almost physical. "Not hers. Not the envoy’s. Mine."

"Emperor is triggering ’ownership event’. What you choose?"A system suddenly announced.

"An ownership?"I asked.

"He wants to make you his for the night."A system explained. Do you agree?"A system asked.

"Make me ’his’? Wait, doesn’t that mean."I whispered under my breath. "He is male! I also male! What is he thinking?"

I looked at his dark golden eyes, and I knew that I had to do something, before it will happen without my permission to it.
