AT THE SAME TIME
XAVIER
The tea room had gone completely silent. I was still holding the empty pastry tray when the doors suddenly opened.
"Your Majesty. The delegation from the Red Moon Flower Empire has arrived." A palace guard stepped inside and bowed.
Lang Li immediately straightened. The Empress Dowager lowered her teacup.
"Already?" She asked.
Before anyone could answer, another announcement echoed through the hall.
"His Imperial Majesty of the Red Moon Flower Empire!"
"Her Imperial Majesty, the Empress Dowager of the Red Moon Flower Empire!"
My hand froze around the tray as the enormous doors opened. A man wearing deep crimson imperial robes entered first. His presence alone silenced the entire room. Beside him walked an elegant older woman dressed in red and gold. The Red Moon Flower Emperor and his mother. They walked several steps into the room. Then the Empress Dowager stopped as her eyes moved across the room, they passed over Lang Li, the other omegas, the servants, then stopped on me. Like she had just seen a ghost. The Emperor followed her gaze, his expression changed instantly. His eyes widened, the room became completely silent. I looked behind me. There was nobody there, they were looking at me.
"Why are they staring at me?" I whispered.
"Ding. Important identity recognition event detected."A system said.
My heart started pounding. The Red Moon Flower Emperor took one slow step forward. His eyes never left my face. The Empress Dowager covered her mouth. Her eyes became glassy.
"No." She whispered.
Everyone in the tea room looked confused. Lang Li’s golden eyes narrowed.
"Your Majesty?" He asked carefully.
The visiting Emperor didn’t answer.
He continued staring at me, then his mother whispered something that made my blood run cold.
"Those eyes." Her voice trembled. "That hair..."
"It can not be."She took another step toward me.
I instinctively stepped backward. The pastry tray suddenly felt extremely heavy in my hands, the entire palace seemed to hold its breath. And for the first time since arriving in this world, I had the terrifying feeling that someone was looking at me not as Chef Wei. But as someone they had been searching for all their lives.
By evening, the entire palace seemed to have transformed. Lanterns covered the courtyard, long tables were filled with food, and musicians played softly while performers prepared traditional dances. Apparently, when an imperial delegation arrived, the palace did not believe in simple dinners. I stood in the kitchen with Ana and Hin, watching dish after dish leave the kitchen.
"Roasted duck!"I shouted. "Lotus soup! Spicy fish! Crystal dumplings! Flower pastries!"
The servants carried everything toward the banquet hall. I followed with the final tray. When I entered, everyone was already gathered. Lang Li sat at the head of the table, while the Empress Dowager sat beside him. Across from them were the visiting Emperor and Empress Dowager of the Red Moon Flower Empire. The atmosphere was formal, but surprisingly warm. I placed the final dishes down. The visiting Empress Dowager immediately looked at me again. That stare still made me nervous.
"Allow me to formally introduce myself."The Emperor of the Red Moon Flower Empire finally stood. He placed one hand over his chest. "I am Emperor Zhao Rui, ruler of the Red Moon Flower Empire."
"And I am Empress Dowager Lin Rui."The woman beside him smiled softly. "I am honored to finally meet you."
Before anyone could explain, the musicians began playing. The dancers entered the courtyard, their red and gold robes flowing as they performed a graceful traditional dance. Everyone watched quietly.
"Why do I feel like something enormous is about to happen?"Ana leaned toward me.
"Because it probably is."I swallowed.
Across the table, Empress Dowager Lin Rui continued watching me. Then she whispered something to Emperor Zhao Rui. His expression softened, and suddenly both of them looked at me with unmistakable emotion. For the first time since the delegation arrived, the tension in the room slowly faded. Everyone was finally eating. Emperor Zhao Rui picked up a piece of roasted duck and took a bite.
"Excellent."His eyes immediately widened.
"Really?"I blinked.
"The meat is tender, and the seasoning is perfect."He nodded and took another bite.
"Thank you, Your Majesty."I smiled despite myself.
Beside him, Empress Dowager Lin Rui tried the lotus soup.
"This is wonderful."She paused. "Did you prepare this?"She looked toward me.
"Yes." I nodded.
"You have quite a talent, Chef Wei."She smiled warmly.
"I just enjoy cooking."I rubbed the back of my neck.
The spicy fish disappeared next, then the crystal dumplings, then the roasted vegetables. I watched as the visiting Emperor actually reached for another dumpling himself.
"This is the best diplomatic dinner I have had in years." Lang Li said.
A few ministers laughed. Even Lang Li looked amused.
"I am pleased our guests are enjoying themselves." He said.
"More than enjoying ourselves. We are impressed."Emperor Zhao Rui raised his cup.
"Your chef has made this visit memorable."He glanced toward me.
"Thank you."I suddenly felt awkward under everyone’s attention.
"Master Wei, they really like your food."Ana was standing behind me, looking ridiculously proud.
"I noticed."Hin quietly whispered.
Then dessert arrived. Flower shaped pastries, honey cakes, and fruit tarts were placed across the table. Empress Dowager Lin Rui picked up one of the flower pastries. She stared at it for a moment before taking a bite. Her expression changed, for some reason, she looked almost emotional.
"This flavor." She slowly looked toward me. "You made this?"
"Yes."I nodded.
"It reminds me of something."She smiled faintly.
"Something good?"I asked.
"Very good."She looked at me for several seconds.
Emperor Zhao Rui quietly placed his hand over hers. They exchanged a look I couldn’t understand. I suddenly felt nervous again as then the Emperor raised his cup.
"Chef Wei." She looked up.
"Chef Wei." Emperor Zhao Rui repeated, looking directly at me.
"Yes, Your Majesty?"I asked.
"We would like to speak with you privately after dinner."He said.
"Me?"I asked.
"Yes. We have something important to discuss."The Empress Dowager Lin Rui nodded.
Lang Li’s golden eyes immediately narrowed. The Empress Dowager beside him looked equally confused.
"Is something wrong?" She asked.
"Nothing is wrong."Emperor Zhao Rui shook his head.
That somehow made me even more nervous.
"Then why do you want to meet him?"She asked.
"Because there are questions only Chef Wei can answer."Lin Rui smiled softly.
"Ding. Suspicious family event detected." I swallowed as the system appeared.
"Family?" I whispered.
Everyone stared at me and I really wanted to run.
