Chapter 37: 37. Bed grounded at healer office

A FEW HOURS LATER

XAVIER

The first thing I noticed was the smell of herbs. Again. Apparently, I was becoming a regular customer at the palace healing wing. My eyelids felt impossibly heavy. I slowly opened them. White curtains, a wooden ceiling, a small table beside the bed. And several familiar faces staring down at me.

"Oh, good." I blinked.

"He’s awake."Ana was standing beside the cot with her arms crossed.

"Master Wei?"Hin immediately leaned closer.

"I am alive." My voice sounded weak.

"Unfortunately." Ana said. "You are also awake."

"That doesn’t sound comforting."I frowned.

"It isn’t."Ana said

I tried to sit up. Immediately, a hand pressed gently against my shoulder.

"No."I heard a similar voice.

I looked up. A palace healer stood beside me.

"No?"I asked.

"You are staying in bed."He said.

"But I feel fine."I said.

"You fainted."The healer stared at me.

"Briefly."I sighed.

"You collapsed in front of three royal delegations."He said.

"Oh."I sighed.

"And you were unconscious long enough for everyone to panic."A healer added.

"Everyone?"I slowly looked around.

A voice came from the doorway.

"Everyone." Lang Li.

I froze. He entered the room with his usual calm expression, but his golden eyes immediately settled on me.

"You fainted again."He said.

"I didn’t do it intentionally."I looked away.

"I know." I said.

He walked closer. I tried sitting up again, the healer immediately pushed me back down.

"No."He said.

"Why is everyone so determined to keep me in this bed?"I stared at him.

"Because you keep trying to leave it."He said.

"That’s because I don’t like beds."I said.

"You like beds perfectly well when you’re sleeping."Ana snorted.

"That is different."I sighed.

Lang Li pulled a chair beside the cot and sat down.

"You’re staying?"I looked at him suspiciously.

"Yes." He said.

"Why?"I sad.

"Because the healer ordered you to rest."He said.

"Did you order him to stay?"I looked at the healer.

"No."He said.

"I’m staying anyway."Lang Li calmly folded his arms.

I sighed. Of course. Then I noticed Zhao Rui and Lin Rui standing outside the room, Huan was behind them. The moment Huan saw me awake, he looked relieved. But he also looked nervous.

"You."I narrowed my eyes.

Huan froze.

"Me?"He asked nervously.

"You still owe me an explanation."I said.

"I know."He nodded.

"What did you know about the flute?"I asked.

Huan opened his mouth as Lang Li’s gaze shifted toward him. Huan immediately closed it and Ana raised an eyebrow.

"This is getting interesting."She said.

"It is not interesting." I muttered.

The healer adjusted my blanket.

"No arguing."He said.

"I’m not arguing."I said.

"You are."He repeated.

"I am questioning."I said again.

"From bed."He said.

"Fine."I sighed.

Hin brought me a cup of water. I took a sip. For a few moments, everything was quiet. Then the system appeared.

"Ding."A system said.

"What now?"I immediately groaned.

"Host recovery status: stable."A system said.

"Good."I said

"Physical activity restriction: active."A system said.

"How long?"I stared at it.

"Until medically cleared."A healer said.

"Can I at least walk to the kitchen?" I asked.

"No."A healer said.

"Can I cook?"I asked.

"No." A healer said.

"That is cruel."I looked horrified.

"Finally, something that actually scares him."Ana laughed.

"You will rest."Lang Li’s expression softened slightly.

"But who will cook?"I asked.

"I can."Ana raised her hand.

"That makes it worse."I stared at her.

"Excuse me?"She gasped.

Hin giggled, even Lang Li looked amused. For the first time since I woke up, the tension in the room eased, but when I glanced toward Huan again, he wasn’t laughing. He was staring at the floor, and that reminded me. There was still something he wasn’t telling me, something about the flute. Something about my memories and whatever had happened before I ever became Chef Wei. I slowly sank back against the pillow. Fine, I would stay in bed, for now, but the moment I was strong enough to stand I would find out what Huan knew. I had barely settled back against the pillow when the door opened again. I expected another healer. Instead, Lin Rui walked in carrying a steaming bowl of stew. Behind her came Zhao Rui carrying another tray.

"What?"I blinked.

"We heard you woke up."Lin Rui smiled.

"So we brought you something warm to eat."Zhao Rui carefully placed the tray on the table.

I stared at the stew then at them.

"Did everyone decide I can’t feed myself anymore?" I asked.

"At the moment?" Lin Rui smiled. "Yes."

Before I could respond, another voice came from behind them.

"Move."A voice said.

Everyone turned as Lang Li entered carrying yet another bowl. I stared at him, then at the bowl, then at Zhao Rui, then at Lin Rui. There was a long silence.

"I brought food."Lang Li calmly walked toward my bedside.

Lin Rui slowly looked at her son then at the bowl in his hands, then back at him.

"You brought him food too?"Her eyebrows rose.

"He needs to eat."Lang Li nodded.

"How thoughtful."Lin Rui looked delighted.

"Please don’t start." I covered my face.

Zhao Rui looked between the three bowls.

"Perhaps we have overdone it."He said.

"Three royal meals."Ana immediately whispered to Hin.

"Chef Wei is being treated like a national treasure."Hin nodded solemnly.

"I can hear you." I muttered.

"Which one do you want?"Lang Li sat beside my cot and placed his bowl down.

I stared at the ridiculous collection of food.

"The stew."I said.

"Mine?"Lin Rui immediately smiled.

"Yes."I hesitated.

Lang Li looked at his own bowl.

"Mine is also stew."He said.

I stared as they were practically identical.

"Why are there two stews?"I slowly pointed.

"Because apparently everyone wants to make sure you eat."Lin Rui laughed.

"At least he is being well cared for."The healer walked in, stopped at the sight of the food, and sighed.

I took a small spoonful. It was delicious.

"This is really good."I nodded.

Lin Rui looked pleased. Lang Li immediately pushed his bowl closer.

"Try mine." He said.

"Your Majesty, I am not eating two bowls."I blinked.

"Half."He said.

"Still too much."I said.

"Three spoonfuls."He said.

"You negotiated food?"I stared at him.

"I negotiated with you."Lang Li said.

Ana turned away, desperately trying not to laugh then Lin Rui suddenly looked at Lang Li.

"Since when did you start bringing food to someone personally?"I asked.

Lang Li paused, the room became quiet. He glanced toward me.

"Since Wei stopped taking care of himself."He said.

My face warmed. Lin Rui’s smile became enormous.

"Oh."She grinned. "I said nothing."

"You are thinking loudly."I sighed.

Zhao Rui coughed into his hand, even the healer looked amused. I wanted the bed to swallow me.

"Ding. Emperor Lang Li affection: 23%."A system said.

"Not now!"I nearly dropped my spoon.

Everyone stared at me. Lang Li frowned.

"What happened?"He asked.

"Nothing." I lowered my head.

"Ding."But then another notification appeared. "Important memory activity detected."

Before I could ask what it meant, the door opened again.

Mei Lin stepped inside carrying a small plate.

"I heard you were awake."She said.

She smiled and placed a flower shaped pastry beside my bed.

"I brought this for you. You always seem happier when you’re eating."Mei Lin said and smiled.

"You didn’t have to."I blinked.

"I wanted to."She said.

"Thank you, Mei Lin."I smiled.

Across the room, Lang Li suddenly became very quiet. I glanced at him as his golden eyes were fixed on the pastry, then on Mei Lin, then on me.

"Ding. Emotional fluctuation detected." A system said.

"Don’t."I sighed.

"Current emotion: Jealousy."A system said.

"Of course."I sighed.

"I’m not jealous."Lang Li frowned.

Nobody had accused him. Mei Lin covered her mouth, trying not to laugh, I looked between them.

"Your Majesty, she’s just being kind."I said.

"I know."He said as he stared at the pastry again.

"I simply don’t understand why she brought you food."He said.

"Because she’s my friend?"I blinked.

Lang Li went silent. Mei Lin’s smile became awkward. Then Lin Rui quietly whispered to Zhao Rui.

"He really is jealous."She said.

"Quite badly."Zhao Rui nodded.

I sighed and took a bite of the pastry, it was delicious.

"I can bring better pastries."Lang Li immediately stood.

"Your Majesty..."I began.

"I can."He said.

Mei Lin giggled. I looked at Lang Li, completely confused. Why was he competing with Mei Lin over a pastry? And why did the thought of him being jealous make my face warm?

"Ding. Emperor Lang Li affection: 24%."A system said.

"Stop!"I nearly choked.

Everyone stared. I covered my face because this was becoming ridiculous.
