Chapter 46: 46. Night cuddles?

I sat on the edge of the enormous bed and immediately regretted looking at it. My face was already warm, now it somehow became even hotter.

"Why am I blushing this much?" I covered my cheeks with both hands.

This was ridiculous. Lang Li hadn’t even done anything, he had simply been gentle with me. Somehow, that was worse, I glanced toward him. He was standing near the window, quietly looking outside. Then he turned, our eyes met. I immediately looked away.

"Are you uncomfortable?" He asked.

"No!" I shouted.

Too fast. He raised an eyebrow.

"I mean... I’m fine."Lang Li said.

"You can rest."He walked closer, but stopped several steps away.

I nodded. My heart continued pounding.

"Ding. Emperor Lang Li relationship affection: 35%."A system said.

"Please stop."I nearly buried myself under the blankets.

"Did you say something?"Lang Li frowned.

"No." I pulled the blanket over my knees. "I was talking to myself."

He looked unconvinced, but thankfully didn’t ask further. For once, the system stayed quiet. I stared at the floor. Being around this man was becoming increasingly dangerous for my composure. An hour later, the room had become completely quiet. I was still sitting on the bed, staring out the window, when Lang Li finally approached.

"You should sleep."He said.

"I know."I said.

"May I?"He paused.

"May you what?"I glanced at him.

"Lie down."He said.

"Fine."I shifted slightly.

Lang Li climbed onto the other side of the bed. I expected him to keep his distance. Instead, after a few quiet moments, his arm gently settled around me.

"Your Majesty?"I froze.

"You’re shaking." Lang Li said.

"I’m not."I said.

"You are." Lang Li said.

I swallowed. His embrace wasn’t demanding. It was simply warm and steady. Slowly, I relaxed against him.

"Ding. Emperor Lang Li relationship affection: 36%."A system said.

I closed my eyes. Of course. Even when nothing happened, my heart still found a way to betray me. I thought Lang Li was going to keep his arm loosely around me, I was wrong. A few quiet moments passed before his arm tightened around my waist, drawing me closer until my back rested comfortably against his chest.

"Your Majesty?"I immediately went stiff.

"You’re holding me rather tightly."I said.

That answer did absolutely nothing to calm me down. Then he lowered his head slightly and nuzzled against my hair, almost absentmindedly, as though he had found the most comfortable position and had no intention of moving. My face became unbearably warm.

"What are you doing?"I asked.

"Getting comfortable."He said.

"You have an entire enormous bed." I reminded him.

"And you are warmer."He said.

I stared at the wall. That was not a reasonable answer. At all. His chin eventually settled near my shoulder, and I could feel his breathing gradually become slower. I tried shifting forward, his arm tightened as I stopped.

"You’re not letting me move."I said.

"You were comfortable a moment ago."He said.

"I still am."I said.

"Then stay."He said.

I opened my mouth and nothing came out. Because, annoyingly, he was right. I was comfortable. More comfortable than I wanted to admit. I carefully relaxed against him again. Lang Li seemed to notice immediately. His hold softened, and he gave another quiet nuzzle against my hair. My heart skipped.

"Ding."A system said. "Emperor Lang Li relationship affection: 37%."

"Why?"I stared at the ceiling.

The system remained silent.

"Why does everything become complicated when I’m comfortable?"I sighed.

"You should sleep, Wei."Lang Li shifted slightly behind me.

His voice had become quieter.

"Alright."I nodded.

For several minutes, neither of us spoke. The palace outside was completely silent, no servants, no ministers, no gossiping omegas, no mysterious imperial documents. Just the quiet room and the steady warmth behind me. I slowly closed my eyes. Then Lang Li gently rested his forehead against the back of my head. I smiled despite myself. Maybe just for tonight I could stop worrying about everything. Sometime during the night, I woke up slightly. Something felt different. Lang Li’s breathing had changed. I slowly opened my eyes.

"Your Majesty?"I asked.

No response. Then I felt him move behind me. His inner wolf had apparently surfaced while he slept, his expression was still peaceful, but there was something distinctly different about the way he held me. His wolf seemed much more instinctive, protective, and affectionate. He buried his face against my hair again. Then he nuzzled me.

"Seriously?"I froze.

Another gentle nuzzle. His arm tightened around me.

"Your wolf is clingy."I stared into the darkness.

Lang Li remained completely asleep. His inner wolf gave another contented little movement, apparently deciding that I was exactly where I belonged.

"Fine. Just for tonight."I sighed.

I carefully settled back against him. His wolf immediately relaxed.

"Ding. Emperor Lang Li relationship affection: 38%."A system said.

"Don’t tell me anything else."I closed my eyes.

The system went silent and for once, I was grateful. I thought the night had finally settled down. I was wrong. Lang Li shifted behind me again, still completely asleep. His arm tightened around my waist, and he pulled me closer until my back was pressed comfortably against his chest.

"Your Majesty..." I whispered.

No response. He simply nuzzled against my hair again, his breathing warm against my neck.

"You’re really clingy when you’re asleep."I sighed.

Another sleepy nuzzle. I couldn’t help smiling a little, then I noticed something else. His breathing had become heavier, his hold was getting tighter, he seemed restless, shifting slightly as though his body was reacting to the warmth and closeness without his conscious mind realizing it.

"Are you dreaming?"I blinked.

Lang Li only made a quiet, sleepy sound and tucked his face closer against my shoulder. I immediately felt my face heat.

"Ding." The system appeared. "Emperor Lang Li’s physiological response is increasing."

"He’s still asleep."I stared at the notification.

"Correct."A system said.

"And he doesn’t realize it?"I asked.

"Correct."He said.

I slowly looked toward the sleeping Emperor. His expression was completely peaceful. He had absolutely no idea that his own body was betraying him.

"This is going to be an extremely awkward morning."I covered my face.

Lang Li nuzzled closer again.

I froze.

"Please stop."I groaned.

He didn’t. Apparently, sleeping Lang Li had decided that personal space was no longer a concept. Morning arrived far too quickly. I was still half asleep when I felt sunlight across my face. Lang Li was still behind me, completely asleep, one arm loosely wrapped around my waist.

"You’re still here..."I blinked.

Before I could move, the bedroom doors suddenly opened.

"Good morning, Lag-"Empress Dowager began speaking.

Behind her, my mother Lin Rui stopped too. Silence. Both women stared at the bed, then at Lang Li, then at me, then at Lang Li’s arm around me.

Lin Rui slowly raised one hand. The Empress Dowager looked at her. They exchanged a single knowing glance. Then they made a high five.

"What are you two doing?!"I stared at them in horror.

"Nothing."Lin Rui covered her mouth, barely containing her laughter.

"That was definitely not nothing!"I gasped.

"We were merely celebrating a successful morning."The other Empress Dowager smiled innocently.

"What successful morning?!"I gasped.

Lang Li finally stirred.

"Why are you shouting?"His eyes opened slowly.

"THEY’RE HERE!"I pointed toward the doorway.

He looked over. Both mothers immediately stood perfectly straight.

"Good morning." Lin Rui said.

Lang Li stared at them, then he looked down as he realized his arm was still around me. His expression went completely blank.

"Mother."I watched the realization travel across his face.

"Yes, dear?"The Empress Dowager smiled.

"Leave."He said.

"Of course."She immediately turned around.

Lin Rui followed her, still smiling.

"Did you see that?"As the doors closed, I heard her whisper.

"I saw everything."His mom said.

"Excellent."Lin Rui nodded.

"This palace is impossible."I buried my face in my hands.

"I agree."Lang Li sighed beside me.

"WEI!" Then, from the hallway Lin Rui’s delighted voice echoed through the corridor.

"Please let the floor swallow me."I groaned.

"Ding. Emperor Lang Li relationship affection: 40%."A system said.

I closed my eyes in defeat. I decided escaping was my only option.

"I should probably go make breakfast." I took one step toward the door, then Lang Li reached out and caught my wrist.

"Wait." Before I could react, he gently pulled me back onto his lap.

"Your Majesty!"I gasped.

A palace maid entered at exactly the wrong moment.

She froze, I froze, Lang Li remained completely calm.

"I-I apologize!"The maid’s face turned bright red.

She immediately turned around and fled.

"That is going to become a rumor."I covered my face.

"Probably."Lang Li looked entirely unbothered.

"This palace is hopeless."I groaned.
