XAVIER
Lang Li’s words barely registered as my eyes were still fixed on Song Hue. Then my vision blurred. I appeared in a brand new location.
"Ding. Memory fragment unlocked."A system said.
I grabbed the edge of the table. The courtyard disappeared, I was small again. Much smaller. I was standing beneath a flowering tree, holding someone’s hand. A boy. I couldn’t see his face clearly, but I knew him. It was Song Hue. His black hair was unmistakable, and his small hand was wrapped tightly around mine. Then suddenly, an adult pulled me away. I stumbled while the boy reached for me. I could feel his hand trying to grab me and failing instead.
"Wait!"He tried to grab me.
I tried to turn back, but the woman holding my hand wouldn’t let go. Her face was clearer than the boy’s. Elegant, beautiful, wearing the crimson robes of the Blood Moon imperial family. She knelt beside me and gently adjusted my fingers around a wooden flute.
"Don’t be frightened." Her voice was warm. "Keep playing."
"Who are you?"I stared at her.
"I am someone who wants you to remember this melody."She smiled sadly.
The memory shifted. I was sitting beside her while she patiently taught me how to play. The same woman, the same flute. The same melody I had somehow remembered years later. Then someone called from behind her. It was the same voice I have heard before.
"Mother!" I heard voice as the woman turned.
The little black haired boy was standing there. Song Hue. The memory shattered. I gasped as my eyes snapped open. Madam Qiao was staring at me. I could see worry at her face, and I could tell that they saw my facial expression as the system had shown me yet another flashback.
"Wei?"Lang Li immediately stepped closer.
I couldn’t answer. It was too hard to explain everything without making others suspicious about it. I was glad that nobody asked about it anymore.
"Memory recovery: 25%."The system flickered.
"That woman from my memories.."I swallowed.
"What woman?"Madam Qiao’s expression changed.
"She taught me the flute."I explained.
Huan had gone completely pale as I looked toward Song Hue.
"She was his mother."Huan said.
"Prince Song Hue’s mother..."Madam Qiao slowly lowered her book. Her voice became barely audible. "The previous Blood Moon Empress."
"She’s dead, isn’t she?"I stared at her.
"She passed away years ago."Madam Qiao nodded.
My hands tightened around the flute. Then another realization hit me, she hadn’t been a random woman teaching a child music. She had known me, she had personally taught me, and she had been standing between Song Hue and me when someone came to take me away.
"Someone took you from him."Lang Li’s expression darkened.
"I think so."I looked at him.
Across the courtyard, Song Hue suddenly looked toward me. His dark red eyes widened as if he had just remembered the same thing. After dinner, I escaped the palace. Not literally. Unfortunately, the guards would probably have noticed.
I simply went for a walk through the garden after finishing dinner for everyone. The evening air was cool, and for once, nobody was asking me about royal blood, mysterious boxes, ancient songs, or childhood memories. I desperately needed that, I reached the small pavilion near the lake. Unfortunately, Ana and Hin were already there. Ana looked at me, then at Hin, then back at me.
"You’re doing the face."She said.
"What face?"I frowned.
"The dramatic face."Ana said.
"I don’t have a dramatic face."I said.
"You absolutely do."Hin nodded seriously.
"Can I have five minutes?"I sighed.
"Of course."Ana smiled.
I sat beside them. For several seconds, I said nothing.
"I remembered something."Then I quietly spoke.
Their expressions immediately softened.
"About original Wei?" Hin asked.
"Yeah."I nodded.
They already knew the truth. They knew I was Xavier, not the original Wei. They knew the memories weren’t mine, yet somehow I kept inheriting pieces of his life.
"I remembered being a child." I explained. "There was another boy."
"Song Hue."Ana immediately understood.
"Yeah." I stared at the lake. "I couldn’t see his face properly, but I knew it was him. Someone pulled me away from him."
"And the woman?"Hin frowned.
"His mother." Ana’s eyes widened. "The previous Blood Moon Empress?"
"She taught me how to play the flute." I nodded.
Silence settled between us.
"She knew me." I whispered. "She knew original Wei."
"And you don’t know why."Hin gently placed a hand on my shoulder.
"No." I rubbed my face. "I don’t even know why I ended up in the Lycan Kingdom. Every answer gives me another five questions."
"That’s because your life has terrible organization."Ana nodded solemnly.
"What?"I looked at her.
"Whoever wrote your backstory clearly didn’t believe in keeping things simple."She shrugged.
"At this point, I’m expecting you to discover you’re secretly the founder of three empires."Hin nodded.
"Please don’t say things like that."I stared at them.
"Fine. Two empires."Ana grinned.
I laughed despite myself, then the laughter faded.
"I’m scared." I admitted quietly.
Ana immediately wrapped her arms around me. Hin joined a moment later and I found myself trapped between them.
"Hey." Ana whispered. "You’re not alone."
"Whatever happened to original Wei, you’re Xavier now. You don’t have to carry his loneliness by yourself."Hin nodded.
My throat tightened as I leaned into them.
"Thanks."I whispered.
"And if another mysterious royal artifact appears tomorrow, we’re throwing it into the lake."Hin nodded.
"Deal."I laughed.
"Except the flute."Hin raised a finger.
"Fine. Except the flute."I sighed.
For the first time that evening, the weight in my chest became a little lighter. I still didn’t know who had taken young Wei away from Song Hue. I didn’t know why the previous Blood Moon Empress had taught me that song, and I certainly didn’t know why my life had become completely different from the novel, but at least I had two idiots willing to sit beside me while I figured it out.
