Chapter 64: 64. A silver veil woman

AT THE SAME TIME

XAVIER

I couldn’t stay there. The moment the system’s final message disappeared, I turned away from everyone.

"I need some air."I sighed.

"Wei." Lang Li immediately called after me.

"I just need a moment."I said.

I didn’t wait for an answer. I walked out of the kitchen and into the corridor, shutting the door behind me. The palace suddenly felt enormous, I kept walking. The memories wouldn’t stop replaying in my head, young Song Hue laughing in the rose garden. His mother holding me, Rosalie carrying me away, and then that final voice.

"Run, little prince."A voice said.

I stopped as my hands were trembling.

"Who was that?"I asked in a distance.

I couldn’t remember, that was the worst part. I had asked the system to show me the truth, and somehow I felt like I understood even less than before. Behind me, the kitchen door opened.

"Wei?"I heard similar voice.

Lang Li.

"I am fine."I quickly wiped my eyes.

"You aren’t."Lang Li said.

I turned around, Lang Li stood several steps away, but he didn’t approach immediately. He seemed to understand that I needed space, Song Hue appeared behind him, then Rosalie, then Lin Rui and Zhao Rui, Ana and Hin were there too. Apparently, my attempt to quietly disappear had failed spectacularly.

"Xavier..."Ana looked worried.

I looked at her.

"You don’t have to explain."She immediately softened.

That almost broke me. I lowered my head.

"I thought I finally understood who I was." I said.

"But every time I learn something about Wei’s past, I find another secret."My voice cracked.

"You don’t have to carry all of it tonight."Lin Rui slowly approached.

I looked at her as she gently held my hand.

"You are still our son."I said.

My eyes burned.

"Whatever happened before, nothing changes that."Zhao Rui nodded firmly.

"And you’re still our annoying little brother."Hin stepped closer.

"Very annoying."Ana immediately nodded.

"You two are terrible at comforting people."A tiny laugh escaped me despite everything.

"Yet you laughed." Ana smiled.

I looked down, then tears finally slipped down my face. Lang Li quietly stepped forward, he didn’t say anything, he simply opened his arms, for several seconds, I hesitated, then I walked into them. His arms wrapped securely around me, and for the first time since the memories returned, I allowed myself to cry.

I buried my face against Lang Li’s chest. The moment his arms closed around me, everything I had been holding back finally broke, I cried. Not quietly, not gracefully. I cried like a child who had spent years trying to understand a life that wasn’t even supposed to be mine. Lang Li didn’t say anything at first. One hand rested firmly against my back while the other gently held the back of my head. His warmth was strangely comforting.

"I don’t understand." I whispered between shaky breaths.

"What don’t you understand?"Lang Li lowered his head slightly.

"Anything." My fingers tightened around his clothes. "I don’t know who Wei was. I don’t know who took him. I don’t know why his memories were hidden. I don’t know why Song Hue remembers things I can’t. And now I am supposed to believe my entire childhood was taken from me?"

"You don’t have to understand everything tonight."Lang Li’s arms tightened around me.

"But I want to." I said.

"I know."He said.

"I want to know more about my parents. I want to know why they couldn’t find me. I want to know why I was separated from Song Hue."I said sadly. "And I want to know why everyone seems to know more about my life than I do!"

"You deserve those answers."Lang Li’s golden eyes softened.

"But what if I don’t like the answers?"I wiped my face angrily.

"Then you don’t have to face them alone."He said.

I stared at him as his voice remained calm, steady and certain.

"I won’t force you to remember anything, Wei."He said.

"You promise?"My eyes filled with tears again.

"I promise."He said.

I lowered my forehead against his chest again. For several seconds, there was only silence, then Ana quietly sniffled from nearby. I looked up and she was crying. Hin was also wiping his eyes.

"Why are you two crying?"I stared at them.

"She’s crying."Ana immediately pointed at Hin.

"You’re crying!"Hin pointed back.

"I’m crying because you’re crying!"Ana gasped.

"You’re both ridiculous." A weak laugh escaped me.

Lang Li’s lips curved into a small smile. Even Song Hue looked relieved to see me laugh, Rosalie, however, remained silent. She was staring at me with an expression I couldn’t read.

"EMOTIONAL STABILITY: 42% and 51% TRUST LEVEL: INCREASING. MEMORY RESTORATION: TEMPORARILY PAUSED."The system appeared.

"Paused?"I stared at the screen.

"SYSTEM: Host needs rest."A system said.

"For once, I agree with you."I sighed.

"HIDDEN MEMORY WARNING. THE NIGHT WEI DISAPPEARED CONTAINS MULTIPLE PARTIES. ONE PARTY PROTECTED HIM. ONE PARTY BETRAYED HIM.

ONE PARTY BENEFITED FROM HIS DISAPPEARANCE."But before the screen disappeared, another message appeared.

My smile vanished as I slowly looked toward Rosalie, then Lin Rui, then Zhao Rui, then Song Hue, and finally Lang Li. Nobody spoke. Because suddenly, I understood something terrifying. My disappearance hadn’t been an accident. It had been planned and somewhere in this palace, someone knew exactly why. Rosalie stood in front of me for a long moment. She had been quiet ever since the system revealed that the night I disappeared involved three different parties: one who protected me, one who betrayed me, and one who benefited from my disappearance. I could still feel Lang Li’s warmth beside me, his hand resting firmly against my back.

"Tell me."I looked at Rosalie.

"Xavier..."Her face tightened.

"No." My voice came out quieter than I expected. "Not this time."

"I don’t want another half truth."I swallowed.

"You’re right."Rosalie closed her eyes as she took a slow breath. "I will tell you everything I remember."

The room became completely silent, even Song Hue, who had been standing near the window, stopped moving.

"That night... I wasn’t supposed to take Wei away from the palace."Rosalie looked at him.

"What?"Song Hue’s expression changed.

"The late Empress ordered me to hide him. She specifically told me to take him somewhere safe and make sure nobody from the imperial court could find him."Rosalie looked down. "I followed her orders."

"So you did take me."My fingers tightened around Lang Li’s sleeve.

"Yes."She said.

"From Song Hue."I said.

"Yes."She said.

"Why did you tell me that you had taken him because my mother wanted to use him?"Song Hue stepped forward.

"Because I believed that was what was happening."Rosalie’s eyes filled with guilt.

Song Hue froze as Rosalie continued.

"The Empress knew that Wei and the young prince were becoming attached. She knew the court would eventually notice. She feared that someone would use Wei against Song Hue."She contunied.

"She wasn’t trying to separate you because she hated your bond."She looked at me.

"She was trying to save both of you."Her voice cracked.

"So you took me away."I stared at her.

"Yes."She said.

"What happened after that?"I asked.

"That is where everything went wrong."Rosalie’s face went pale.

"MEMORY RESTORATION AVAILABLE. EMOTIONAL STABILITY: 51%. WARNING: MEMORY CONTAINS TRAUMATIC EVENT. PROCEED?"The system flickered.

I hesitated, then I nodded.

"Show me."I said.

The world around me blurred. I was suddenly looking through the eyes of a child, young Wei, small hands, small feet. A little red cloak wrapped around his shoulders, and Rosalie was carrying me through a dark corridor.

"Don’t be afraid, little one." She whispered.

Young Wei buried his face against her shoulder.

"Where are we going?"He asked.

"Somewhere safe."She said.

"Will Mama come?"He asked.

"Your family will find you."Rosalie’s expression broke.

"Promise?"Young Wei smiled.

"I promise."Rosalie hugged him tighter.

They reached a small carriage waiting outside the palace. Rosalie climbed inside, the carriage began moving, for several minutes, everything was peaceful. The horses suddenly stopped.

"What happened?"Rosalie’s head snapped upward.

No answer as she opened the carriage door. A man stood in the road, black cloak, face hidden. Three armed men stood behind him.

"Stay behind me."Rosalie immediately grabbed young Wei.

"Give me the child."The stranger spoke.

"No."Rosalie’s face hardened.

"He doesn’t belong to you."He said.

"He belongs to his family."She said.

"The family that thinks he’s dead?"He asked.

Rosalie froze.

"They will continue believing that."The stranger laughed quietly.

"Who are you?"Rosalie’s blood ran cold.

"You don’t need to know."He said.

The memory shook as young Wei started crying.

"Run."Rosalie pulled him close.

She jumped from the carriage as the three men attacked. Rosalie fought desperately, she wasn’t a warrior, but she fought like a woman who had nothing left to lose. One attacker swung his sword, Rosalie dodged as another grabbed her arm. She kicked him away, then the cloaked man stepped forward.

"Enough." He raised his hand.

A strange symbol appeared. A wave of magic exploded through the road. Rosalie fell.

"Mama!"Young Wei screamed.

"Run, Wei!"Rosalie tried to stand.

But young Wei couldn’t move, the stranger walked toward him. Then another figure appeared, a woman: silver veil, dark blue robes.

"Touch the child..."She stepped between the stranger and young Wei. Her voice was ice. "And you will answer to me."

I suddenly opened my eyes and was back in a room. Who was that woman? Why she saved me?
