Helena briefly opened her eyes and saw the gloomy expression on Sarah’s face, and smiled warmly.

"Don’t worry, lady. I’ve already prepared myself for this the moment I entered the military. I knew one day, I’ll have to deal a damage or two."

Then Helena grinned mischievously.

"Why do you think I keep Grayson alive and tolerate him this much? My rich, peaceful retirement life after the military is in the hands of that bastard."

"As long as you’re happy," Thiago said as he continued examining the wound and scrape more.

Meanwhile, outside, two men were still in a deadlock with another high-ranked Zerg.

Regardless of Grayson’s orders, Ciel’s was still rolling around, trying to find an angle to quickly snatch Catalina from Keres’s forelimbs at a sign of an opening.

This is my fault.

The thought kept circling back in his head, unable to get over it.

If he had been faster, if he had been more serious, if he had maintained top condition all the time, this wouldn’t have happened.

But in reality, how could it be just his fault? Or rather, it was no one’s fault. Because no one foresaw this all happening.

They did all they could and thought of the possible variables. But no one could’ve known that Catalina would show up in here without saying anything.

But Ciel, even if he was already an adult, was still inexperienced enough as a soldier to express frustration all over his face.

Despite Grayson ordering him not to move or even breathe, meaning don’t express himself, Ciel couldn’t help but grind his molars.

He learned that the second-hardest thing to do in a situation like this was to do nothing.

Grayson was also frustrated; his plasma gun still aimed at Keres, locked into a deadlock. Catalina was already ready to die, and Keres also kept yapping around.

BANG!

It didn’t come from him but somewhere inside the building. Things seemed to be getting heated up inside if it was getting louder.

The sound didn’t make anyone in here flinch undisturbed. Grayson hoped that Keres panicked a little. It was Ciel who had been warming up, searching for an opening that could come in and save Catalina.

But a high-ranking zerg was still an intelligent being amongst the zergs to be able to remain composed in that moment.

They must be having another headache over there. Grayson thought.

His stress levels were getting higher by the second. He wanted nothing more than to abandon everything, everyone, and turn around, sprint across the lawn, and go help Colonel Vane.

Because Colonel Vane was alone, keeping a huge zerg that mounted Ethan and the unconscious Neville inside the barrier, unable to get away easily.

But as much as he loved to do that and helped as many as possible. This, in front of him, was the most urgent.

Keres watched Grayson struggle with morbid glee.

"You seemed to be sweating hard, General. Forgive me—former General."

Keres’s voice came out layered, mocking.

"What are you waiting for?"

"Ah—are you hoping for me to get distracted by that loud sound?"

Keres continued, narrowing its bloody red eyes, grinning mockingly.

"I’m sorry, I’m not the type to get distracted that easily. How about sacrificing a fresh flesh or two, that might work. Who knows?"

"Seriously, do you think that sound is enough to distract me? Man, you’re looking down at me too much."

Seeing no reaction from Grayson, Keres continued cockily as he tightened his limbs around Catalina. It made her cry another level as one of her shoulders seemed to have popped.

"I’m waiting here~ how long do I have to wait? Please. I don’t have much patience."

Grayson sent a warning fire, making Keres instinctively loosen his grip just a little from Catalina.

Despite his irritating reflexes, Keres clicked, pleased that he got Grayson’s full attention again.

"It must be agonizing. There he goes—"

A barbed limb tilted, lazily, toward the ridge where Ethan and the mount were dwindling into the dark.

"—your little boyfriend, riding off into the night in another man’s arms. And you can’t move from here. You can’t do anything."

The mandibles spread in the zerg approximation of a grin.

"Tick, tick, tick. How long do you think he would remain unconscious before waking up and finding everyone dead? Do you think he would get PTSD bad enough to be in a coma?"

Keres tapped his other limbs, thinking this was an interesting topic to linger on.

"You’re running out of time, Maxwell. You know that, yes? But don’t worry too much, clearly, that guy holding your little boyfriend didn’t want to kill him. At least that would give you some peace of mind, yes?"

Grayson’s jaw tightened, but he refused to talk. He even stopped Ciel from cursing Keres.

"Oh, just a crazy realization—"

Keres pressed, because cruelty bored him when it wasn’t as witty.

"You could’ve ended all of this in twelve seconds. One launch and one shot. Your SSS-grade unit would kill anyone and anything in the way, and you’ll live a happily ever after."

He paused and made a soft, theatrical sound of recollection, the chitin around his mouthparts curling.

"Oh. Oh. That’s right. Silly me. Your SSS-grade mecha is currently buried under several thousand tons of debris in the Mecha Research Institute, isn’t it? How careless of me."

The hum sharpened with glee.

"Whoops."

Inside Grayson, something finally clicked in his brain.

He did not take the bait. He did not get angry—or rather, he was very angry. But he took Keres’s gloating and happy blabbing into account to extract free information out of him.

This zerg already knew that he couldn’t get back his mecha.

Grayson technically should’ve gotten back his mecha when he got out of the Mecha Research Institute with Neville. However, he went back and had the researchers add something for him.

In the end, his mecha remained and was moved to the lowest basement level in the institute. Because the sole entrance to that basement level was inaccessible due to the debris, it was impossible for him to get back in time.
