Chapter 102: Chapter 102 — The Soul Chain
Chapter 102 — The Soul Chain
Lyra woke up in a complete daze.
Her vision was blurry, and it took several moments for everything to come into focus. There was a strange ache within her inner world, an unfamiliar sensation she had never experienced before.
As her consciousness slowly returned, she noticed something warm beneath her head.
Then she heard a faint sound.
Thump.
Thump.
A heartbeat?
Lyra’s brows furrowed.
Confused, she slowly opened her eyes.
The first thing she noticed was that her arms were wrapped around someone.
Her eyes widened.
Her head was resting against Victor’s chest.
For several seconds, she simply stared.
Then her expression immediately changed.
She scrambled backward, practically throwing herself away from him.
"What the hell...?"
Lyra stared at Victor.
He was still unconscious, lying motionless on the stone floor.
Anger slowly filled her eyes.
She had spent so much time trying to keep her distance from this human, and somehow, she had ended up sleeping in his arms.
Her hand moved toward Victor’s dagger.
She could kill him right now.
He was unconscious.
He wouldn’t even have a chance to react.
Her fingers moved closer.
Then she stopped.
Something inside her resisted.
Lyra frowned.
She didn’t understand.
Why couldn’t she kill him?
Her eyes remained fixed on Victor.
Then the memories returned.
Everything she had experienced in the vision came rushing back.
And then she remembered Victor.
She remembered his past.
His mother.
His father.
The little boy forced into a situation no child should ever have experienced.
Victor killing his own father simply to survive.
Lyra’s hand slowly moved away from his dagger.
For the first time, she felt something she didn’t want to admit.
Pity.
She still hated humans.
She still hated Victor.
But after seeing what he had experienced, a small part of that hatred had become harder to maintain.
Lyra turned away from him.
She scooted farther across the stone floor, putting as much distance between them as possible.
She needed time to think.
But almost immediately, something caught her attention.
A chain extended from her hand.
She stared at it.
It was unlike any ordinary chain.
The links were made from a strange mixture of black and purple energy, each one roughly three inches in size. They were solid enough to appear almost physical, yet faint Spiritual Energy continuously flowed through them.
Lyra followed the chain with her eyes.
It stretched across the room.
Roughly six feet.
The other end was connected to Victor’s right hand.
Lyra’s expression changed.
She reached down and grabbed the chain.
She pulled.
The chain didn’t move.
She stood and took several steps backward.
The moment she reached the end of its range, an invisible force stopped her.
Lyra frowned.
She could feel it.
The chain wasn’t simply attached to her hand.
It was connected to something much deeper.
Her soul.
She immediately understood that removing it wouldn’t be simple.
Lyra slowly sat back down.
She closed her eyes and focused inward.
Her consciousness entered her inner world.
The moment she looked around, she froze.
Her eyes widened.
Her Core had changed.
She had been Rank 9 before.
Now...
Rank 10.
And she wasn’t merely at the beginning of Rank 10.
Her cultivation had reached the upper portion of the realm, dangerously close to its peak.
Lyra stared at her Core in disbelief.
But that wasn’t all.
Something else was burning within her inner world.
A flame that looked like a shadow.
She stared at it.
A small black flame quietly burned within her inner world.
Lyra’s expression filled with confusion.
What had happened to her?
She remained still, staring at the strange flame and her transformed Core.
Nothing made sense.
Then, behind her, something moved.
Victor stirred.
His eyes slowly opened.
He pushed himself upright and looked around the chamber.
His gaze eventually landed on Lyra.
She was sitting roughly six feet away from him, her back partially turned toward him.
Victor frowned.
Then he looked down.
His eyes widened.
A strange purple-and-black chain extended from his right hand across the stone floor.
He followed it with his eyes.
The other end was connected to Lyra’s left hand.
Victor reached toward it.
The moment his fingers touched the chain, he felt something familiar.
He could feel it deep within his soul.
Victor’s expression became serious.
He sat there quietly for several seconds, trying to understand what had happened.
Then the memories returned.
The forest.
The young Shadow Fox.
Her parents.
The humans.
He finally understood.
The girl in the vision had been Lyra.
He knew her name now.
And he understood something about her that he hadn’t before.
Her hatred of humans.
Victor lowered his gaze.
After everything she had experienced as a child, he couldn’t blame her.
He still didn’t trust her.
He would still have to watch his back around her.
But he no longer wanted to make things harder for her.
Victor slowly shook his head, clearing his thoughts.
Then he closed his eyes and focused inward.
His consciousness entered his inner world.
The moment he saw his Black Flame, he froze.
It was stronger.
Far stronger.
Victor stared at it in disbelief.
His soul power had improved dramatically.
The flame was significantly more powerful than before.
Then he looked toward his Core.
Rank 9.
Victor’s eyes widened.
He had been Rank 8 before the Twin Flame Flower.
Somehow, the process had pushed his cultivation another step forward.
A small smile appeared on his face.
He had gained more than he could have imagined.
Not only had his Soul Power grown stronger, but his cultivation had advanced as well.
Victor remained in his inner world for several more seconds, studying the changes.
Eventually, he exhaled.
There was too much to understand.
He needed a moment to process everything.
Victor withdrew his consciousness from his inner world and opened his eyes.
He sat quietly on the stone floor.
His gaze moved toward the strange chain connecting his hand to Lyra’s.
For the moment, neither of them understood what the Soul Bond had truly done.
But one thing was already clear.
Neither of them was getting away from the other anytime soon.
