Chapter 105: Chapter 105 — Beyond the Door
Chapter 105 — Beyond the Door
A week had passed since Victor and Lyra had entered the mysterious chamber and been forced into the strange Soul Bond.
The biggest improvement had been the Soul Chain.
When they had first awakened, the distance between them had been limited to roughly six feet. Now, after a week of being connected, that distance had doubled.
Twelve feet.
It wasn’t freedom, but it was certainly better than being forced to stay within arm’s reach of each other.
Victor had also noticed another change.
His comprehension had increased dramatically.
The Soul Bond seemed to have affected more than just his soul. His ability to understand techniques, circulate energy, and grasp concepts that had previously felt difficult had all improved.
He had especially noticed it with Flash Step.
The technique was changing.
He could feel it.
He was only one step away from reaching the Intermediate stage.
Who would have thought soul power could be so useful when it came to comprehending techniques?
Unfortunately, not everything had changed.
Victor and Lyra’s relationship remained almost exactly where it had been when they first awakened.
They still hadn’t had a proper conversation about what they were going to do next.
Victor had tried.
Several times.
Most attempts had ended with Lyra glaring at him.
He had quickly learned that silence was usually the better option.
However, things had to change.
Victor sat cross-legged on the stone floor, thinking.
They had stayed inside the chamber long enough. Victor could feel that Lyra had basically healed from her injuries.
There was nothing left to gain from remaining here.
Eventually, Victor opened his eyes.
He stood and stretched before walking over to his belongings.
He grabbed his pack and began gathering everything he had collected.
The map came first.
Victor carefully rolled it up before placing it inside.
Then he gathered the writings and records that had been sitting on Samal’s desk.
There was no way he was leaving those behind.
Once everything was packed, Victor threw the bag over his shoulder.
He looked toward Lyra.
"Hey, Shadow Fox."
Lyra ignored him.
Victor waited.
Maybe she hadn’t heard him.
He tried again.
"Hey, Shadow Fox."
This time, he said it slower.
A small twitch appeared above Lyra’s eye.
Victor sighed.
He knew what he had to do.
"Lyra."
Her head snapped toward him.
"Don’t you dare say my name, human."
Victor waited.
Lyra huffed quietly, clearly irritated.
"What do you want?"
Victor looked at her.
"We need to leave the chamber."
Silence filled the room.
Lyra stared at him.
Then her expression hardened.
"Have you forgotten about the beast waiting to eat us outside the door?"
Victor smiled.
"It might be gone by now."
Lyra snorted.
"And if it isn’t?"
"We can’t live here forever."
She stared at him for several seconds.
Eventually, she sighed.
"Fine."
Victor nodded.
He walked toward the stone door.
Then stopped.
He stared at it.
There was only one problem.
He had absolutely no idea how to open the damn thing.
Victor looked along the walls, searching for anything that might resemble a mechanism.
After a few moments, he spotted something.
A small stone button was embedded into the wall beside the door.
Victor pressed it.
A series of mechanical clicks echoed through the chamber.
The massive stone door slowly separated from the center.
Just like before.
Victor waited until the opening was large enough before cautiously looking outside.
Nothing moved.
No sign of the Barganchula.
Victor slowly reached for his dagger.
He held it in front of himself.
Nothing.
The dagger remained dark.
Victor lowered it slightly.
"Looks clear."
He stepped through the doorway.
Lyra followed behind him.
The moment they exited, the stone door slowly closed.
The chamber disappeared behind them.
Darkness swallowed the cavern.
Victor took another step.
Then stopped.
His eyes widened.
He could see.
The cavern was completely dark, yet Victor could make out the walls, the uneven ground, and even the faint outlines of distant trees.
He blinked several times.
What the hell?
He looked around.
This should have been impossible.
Then the answer suddenly clicked.
The Soul Bond.
Apparently, the strange connection between him and Lyra had given him another ability.
Night vision.
Victor turned toward Lyra, ready to tell her.
Then he saw the look on her face.
She was already glaring at him.
Maybe he’d keep that information to himself.
He turned away and continued walking.
The two of them moved through the cavern in silence.
Eventually, they reached the location where they had made camp before the Barganchula had chased them deeper into the cave system.
Victor recognized the entrance almost immediately.
He stepped forward.
Then froze.
His entire body went still.
Blood covered the ground.
The enormous Barganchula lay motionless in a pool of its own blood.
Its massive body was sprawled across the ground.
Its head had been completely severed from its body.
Victor stared.
For several seconds, he couldn’t process what he was seeing.
What... killed it?
It had been powerful enough that Victor and Lyra had barely escaped it.
Yet now it was dead.
And whoever had killed it had done so with enough force to remove its head.
Victor’s expression became serious.
Whatever had killed the Barganchula was far more dangerous than anything they had encountered so far.
Lyra stood beside him.
Her expression was just as frozen.
Victor could tell she had reached the same conclusion.
Neither of them spoke.
They simply stared at the corpse.
After several seconds, Victor finally broke the silence.
"We should leave."
Lyra nodded.
"Quickly."
Victor walked over to where he had hidden her weapons, picked them up, and handed them to her.
Victor glanced at her.
He briefly considered picking her up and activating Flash Step.
Before he could say anything, Lyra glared at him.
"Don’t even think about it."
Victor blinked.
"I know what you were thinking."
She looked ready to attack him if he even got close to her.
"Use your technique. I can follow just fine."
Victor considered it for a moment before deciding to take her word for it.
He turned toward the forest.
He lowered his body slightly.
Spiritual Energy surged through his legs.
Then—
Flash Step.
Victor vanished forward.
His body shot through the forest like an arrow.
Branches blurred around him as he accelerated between the trees.
For a moment, he couldn’t see Lyra.
Then a shadow moved beneath his feet.
Victor glanced down.
A figure emerged from his shadow.
Lyra.
She landed lightly and immediately began sprinting behind him.
Victor’s eyebrows rose.
So that’s how she keeps up.
Every time Victor activated Flash Step, Lyra disappeared into the shadows before reappearing behind him.
The two of them moved almost perfectly together.
Neither slowed down.
The forest rushed past them as they continued deeper into the unknown.
And neither of them knew what they were going to find next.
