Chapter 112 — The Ancient Tomb

Victor and Lyra spent most of the rest of the day recovering.

The battle had taken more out of them than either wanted to admit.

Victor’s Spiritual Energy had eventually returned to a comfortable level, and the pain in his shoulder had faded to something manageable.

Eventually, Victor opened his eyes.

He stood.

His body felt considerably better.

His Spiritual Energy had recovered enough that, if something attacked them, he could at least defend himself.

Victor looked down at Lyra.

She was still cultivating.

He decided not to disturb her.

Instead, he began walking around the chamber.

He made a slow lap around the room, examining everything they had previously overlooked.

That was when he noticed another entrance.

Or what was left of one.

Victor approached cautiously.

The entire doorway appeared to have been destroyed.

The metal around the entrance had been burned away, its edges warped and melted as though something incredibly corrosive had eaten through it.

Victor frowned.

He looked beside the doorway.

Another plaque was embedded in the wall.

He brushed away the accumulated dirt.

LEVEL FOUR

Victor stared at it.

Then he looked at the ruined entrance.

Level Four.

Whatever waited beyond it was probably going to be worse than what they had already encountered.

But they couldn’t stay here forever.

Victor turned around.

Lyra had already opened her eyes.

She looked toward him.

"I think it’s time we continue."

Lyra nodded.

She stood.

The two of them approached the entrance together.

Victor drew his dagger.

Lyra summoned her two blades.

They stepped through.

A narrow hallway stretched ahead of them.

Roughly twenty feet.

Victor moved slowly.

Lyra followed closely behind.

Neither wanted to discover another surprise the hard way.

They reached the end of the hallway.

Victor carefully rounded the corner.

Then stopped.

His eyes widened.

The room wasn’t nearly as large as the previous chambers.

But it was still enormous.

Roughly half the size of a football field.

The entire room appeared to have been constructed from the same strange, diamond-like material they had seen before.

Gemstones and jewels had been embedded throughout the walls.

Intricate patterns covered nearly every surface.

Whatever this room had once been used for, it had clearly been incredibly important.

But Victor barely noticed any of it.

His attention was drawn to the center.

A single coffin stood there.

Unlike every other coffin they had encountered, this one was completely transparent.

Victor could see something inside.

He slowly walked toward it.

Then he noticed something else.

At the far corner of the room was a massive hole.

It was enormous.

Nearly large enough for an elephant to walk through.

The edges had been burned and warped.

Victor stared at it.

Then looked back at the coffin.

"So that’s how the Cyclops Spiders got in here."

They had entered through this opening.

Victor turned toward Lyra.

She was staring at the room with confusion.

She didn’t seem to understand what any of this meant.

Victor didn’t blame her.

He turned back toward the coffin.

A set of stairs descended toward it.

Victor slowly walked down.

Each footstep echoed through the enormous chamber.

When he finally reached the bottom, he stopped.

His breath caught.

Inside the crystal-clear coffin lay a human.

The body had been perfectly preserved.

The man looked almost as though he had simply fallen asleep.

Victor stared at him.

Samal.

There was no mistaking that face.

Victor had seen it in visions, paintings, and statues. He knew those features well enough that seeing them on a perfectly preserved body sent a chill through him.

Victor stepped closer, unable to take his eyes off the body.

Then something caught his attention.

Behind the coffin stood a stone tablet. A pillar rose from its center, and atop it stood another statue.

Victor looked at the statue.

The figure looked almost identical to the man lying inside the coffin.

At least, that’s what he initially thought.

But something was wrong.

Victor didn’t feel anything.

No surge of enlightenment.

He frowned.

Then he read the inscription carved into the stone tablet.

In loving memory of my son.

Beneath it were another few words.

I will miss you more than the stars in the sky.

Victor’s eyes moved lower.

Day of Death: Year 127,000

He froze.

His mind immediately put the pieces together.

"His son..."

Victor looked back at the body.

Then at the statue.

The face was similar to Samal’s.

But it wasn’t Samal.

It was his son.

Victor’s gaze returned to the inscription.

In loving memory of Liam.

Liam Samal.

Victor stared at the name.

"Liam..."

He looked at the preserved body again.

Now the resemblance made sense.

Liam had inherited many of his father’s features.

Victor slowly circled the coffin.

Then something caught his attention.

A ring rested on Liam’s chest.

It was black.

A thin silver circular design wrapped around its center.

He could feel an unusual energy coming from it.

Something he had never encountered before.

Victor stared at it for several seconds.

Then his eyes moved toward the statue.

He approached it.

His hand slowly rose.

Victor placed his palm against the statue.

The moment he touched it—

Everything changed.

A strange force surged through him.

Victor froze.

His vision disappeared.

The room vanished.

And a scene from the distant past filled his mind.

At the exact same moment, Lyra felt something pull through the Soul Bond.

Her eyes widened.

She had been following Victor throughout the chamber, watching him examine the strange human body and the statue without understanding what any of it meant.

But the moment Victor touched the statue, she felt it.

Something had activated.

Her connection to him suddenly became incredibly strong. She could feel the Soul Bond pulling at her consciousness.

Lyra’s body froze.

Then—

Both Victor and Lyra collapsed.

Their bodies struck the floor almost simultaneously.

Their eyes closed.

Their consciousness was pulled somewhere else.

Somewhere far beyond the crypt.

And once again, a memory belonging to the distant past began to unfold.
