Chapter 16: Chapter 16 — Rebirth
Chapter 16 — Rebirth
The room was silent. Jacob’s breathing was slow and steady from the other side of the room, completely unaware of what Victor was doing. Victor sat cross-legged on his bed, his back straight and his hands resting loosely against his knees. After everything that had happened during the day, his body should have been exhausted. Yet his mind was clearer than it had been all day. He closed his eyes, and his consciousness descended inward.
The familiar darkness of his Inner World surrounded him. It was different from the physical world. There was no ceiling, no floor, no walls. Only an endless darkness that seemed to stretch in every direction. At the center of that darkness burned the Black Flame, its dark fire flickering silently against the void.
Victor’s attention immediately went toward his Core.
It floated beneath the Black Flame, suspended within the darkness like a small sphere of condensed energy. Victor stared at it. The Core had changed. It was still roughly the size of a marble, its surface carrying a faint bronze color, but it looked nothing like it had earlier that day. Energy seemed to pulse beneath its surface, causing faint waves of light to travel across it. It looked almost as though the Core were struggling to contain everything packed inside it.
Victor focused his senses. Then he noticed something he hadn’t seen before.
There was spiritual energy surrounding the Core. Not the faint, scattered energy that had existed within his Inner World before. This energy was vibrant. It shimmered in the darkness, almost golden in appearance, and moved with a strange liveliness.
Victor slowly turned his attention toward the Black Flame. The answer became obvious.
The energy from the Tier One herb he had absorbed earlier was still there.
When he had first absorbed the herb, most of its spiritual energy had gathered around the Black Flame. Now, only about half remained there. The rest had somehow found its way toward his Core.
Victor watched as another thin strand of energy emerged from the Black Flame. It traveled through the darkness before joining the energy surrounding his Core.
Victor’s eyes narrowed.
"So that’s what you’ve been doing."
The Black Flame wasn’t simply absorbing the energy.
It was processing it.
Refining it.
The energy that emerged from the flame was noticeably different from the energy that entered it. It was purer, more concentrated, almost as if the Black Flame had stripped away everything unnecessary before sending the useful portion onward.
Victor suddenly remembered the cultivation method buried within his bloodline.
The Black Phoenix cultivation technique.
The Black Flame wasn’t meant to exist independently of the cultivator’s Core. They were connected. The flame refined spiritual energy, while the Core provided the foundation necessary for the flame to continue growing. Neither could truly reach its full potential without the other.
Victor watched the energy continue flowing.
The Black Flame had spent most of the day nurturing his Core.
And now he understood why.
His Core was behind.
Far behind.
The Black Flame had already accumulated enough energy to reach its next stage, but Victor’s cultivation had not caught up yet. Rather than allowing that energy to go to waste, the Black Flame had been feeding the excess into his Core.
Victor looked at the sphere again.
It was saturated.
Completely saturated.
He could feel it.
There was no room left.
One more push.
That was all it needed.
Victor slowly reached toward the energy surrounding his Core with his consciousness. The moment he touched it, the entire Inner World seemed to respond.
The spiritual energy began moving.
At first, it was slow. A gentle current began circling the Core, carrying the refined energy around its surface. Victor watched carefully as the current gradually accelerated.
Faster.
Then faster.
The energy began forming a spiral.
Victor could feel the pressure building.
His Core began to rotate.
The bronze sphere spun slowly at first, then faster as the surrounding energy formed a tightening vortex around it. The light became brighter with every rotation, illuminating the darkness of his Inner World.
Victor’s breathing grew heavier in the physical world. Sweat began forming across his forehead. He could feel something happening inside his body.
The energy was no longer simply surrounding the Core.
It was entering it.
Thin streams of refined spiritual energy peeled away from the vortex and sank into the bronze sphere.
The Core trembled.
Victor’s expression tightened.
More energy entered.
The bronze surface began to glow.
It was almost like watching molten metal being poured into a mold. Every strand of energy that entered seemed to add another layer to the Core, strengthening it from within.
The Core began growing.
Barely at first.
Then Victor noticed it.
The marble-sized sphere was becoming larger.
Its surface became smoother, brighter, more solid.
The energy surrounding it continued spinning faster and faster, forming a violent vortex that seemed to pull everything toward its center.
Victor could feel the pressure inside his body increasing. His muscles tightened. His teeth clenched. Sweat rolled down his face.
Then something inside him gave way.
The vortex collapsed inward.
Every strand of spiritual energy was pulled toward the Core at once.
Victor’s eyes snapped open.
For a brief moment, there was complete silence.
Then—
Boom.
The energy erupted through his body.
Victor’s back arched as a wave of power surged through his muscles, bones, and spiritual pathways. His body trembled violently beneath the sudden flood of energy.
He gritted his teeth.
The pain wasn’t unbearable. It was more like his entire body was being forcibly rebuilt.
Something dark began leaking from his pores.
At first, Victor thought it was sweat.
Then he noticed the smell.
His expression changed.
A thick, black substance seeped from his skin, coating his arms and neck. It was disgusting, carrying the foul scent of impurities that had been buried inside his body for years.
The Black Flame was burning them away.
Victor’s previous cultivation had not been clean. He had reached Rank Four through ordinary cultivation, absorbing both the useful energy and the impurities that came with it.
Now the Black Flame was correcting that mistake.
The impurities were being forced out.
Victor’s body shook as more of the black substance emerged.
Then, slowly, the pressure disappeared.
The energy settled.
Silence returned.
Victor remained completely still.
Inside his Inner World, the Core floated quietly.
It was no longer the same size. It had grown slightly larger, and its bronze surface looked more refined than before. There was a subtle metallic shine running across it, as though it had been forged rather than merely cultivated.
Victor stared at it.
He knew.
Body Tempering — Rank Five.
A faint smile appeared on his face.
He had broken through.
But then his attention shifted.
The Black Flame was still burning.
Victor looked toward it.
The flame had changed.
The energy surrounding it was dense now, almost completely condensed. The remaining energy from the herb had been refined until there was almost nothing left to process.
Victor could feel something waiting inside the flame.
A threshold.
The final step.
Tier One.
The Black Flame needed a Tier One herb to reach its first stage, and Victor had already supplied it.
Now all that remained was to activate the change.
Victor focused on the flame.
It reacted immediately.
The dark fire began to grow.
It expanded slowly at first, stretching higher into the darkness. Its flames became more intense, swallowing the surrounding shadows as though the darkness itself were fuel.
Victor watched in fascination.
The flame grew larger.
Larger.
And larger.
Then, without warning—
It vanished.
Victor froze.
There was nothing.
The darkness returned.
For a moment, Victor wondered if something had gone wrong.
Then he noticed it.
A tiny ember.
It hovered in the darkness where the Black Flame had once been.
Small.
Almost insignificant.
But Victor could feel the difference.
This wasn’t the same flame.
The ember pulsed once.
A wave of darkness spread outward.
Victor felt the pressure.
It was stronger.
Far stronger.
The ember flickered again.
A thin black flame emerged from its center.
Then another.
The tiny flame began growing.
Not explosively.
Not violently.
It rebuilt itself piece by piece.
The Black Phoenix was reborn.
Victor suddenly understood.
The Black Flame didn’t simply become stronger.
It died and returned.
Every advancement was a rebirth.
The tiny flame continued growing until it became a small but incredibly dense black fire. Its edges were sharper now, its center darker than before, and the darkness around it seemed almost eager to disappear into its flames.
Victor stared at it in silence.
He could feel the power contained within that tiny flame.
It was smaller than before.
Yet somehow, it felt vastly more powerful.
Black Flame — Tier One.
Victor slowly smiled.
Then he felt something else.
A familiar sensation.
A connection stretching somewhere beyond his Inner World.
The Library.
Victor could feel it waiting.
For a moment, he expected the same force that had dragged him there before.
But it didn’t come.
Instead, he felt something different.
Control.
The connection was still there, but this time, he could decide whether to follow it.
Victor looked at the newly reborn Black Flame, then toward the distant sensation of the Library. He had questions. A lot of them. And there was only one person—or whatever the Library Spirit actually was—who might have some answers.
Victor took a slow breath.
"Guess it’s time to pay him another visit."
He focused his consciousness on the connection.
The darkness around him began to fade.
And Victor stepped toward the Library.
