Chapter 44: Chapter 44 — What Remains
Chapter 44 — What Remains
Victor awoke several hours later.
At first, he didn’t know where he was.
Everything was blurry. His vision drifted in and out of focus while his mind struggled to pull itself from the darkness of unconsciousness. For several long seconds, he simply lay there, staring upward without really seeing anything. His thoughts felt distant and sluggish, as though his mind had been wrapped in a thick layer of fog.
Then the memories returned.
They hit him all at once.
Victor’s eyes widened slightly as his body remembered everything his mind had forgotten. The feeling of branches whipping past him. The sound of something massive crashing through the forest behind him. The desperate realization that no matter how fast he ran, the Panther was faster.
Then came the moment he had nearly died.
Victor sucked in a sharp breath, immediately regretting it as agony spread through his body.
Victor slowly closed his eyes again and allowed the pain to settle into something he could tolerate.
Victor remained where he was for several more minutes. He allowed his breathing to stabilize while his mind gradually cleared. Every instinct told him to get up and figure out where he was, but his body made one thing painfully clear.
He wasn’t going anywhere quickly.
Eventually, he carefully began shifting toward the nearest wall. The moment his body moved, pain shot through him, forcing his jaw to tighten. His injured arm shifted slightly at his side, hanging uselessly.
Victor leaned his head back against the ground and closed his eyes for a moment.
After everything that had happened, the broken arm barely surprised him.
Slowly, and with considerable effort, Victor began dragging himself toward the wall. He used his good arm and his legs, moving inch by painful inch across the cold stone floor. Every movement caused the wounds across his stomach to protest, but eventually, he reached the wall and leaned himself against it.
Then he slowly crossed his legs.
The last time he had been seriously injured, cultivation had helped him recover.
The energy moving through him encouraged the bloodline to awaken, and that awakening seemed to stimulate his natural recovery.
Victor took a slow breath.
Then he closed his eyes.
He began cultivating.
Slowly, the familiar sensation returned.
Spiritual energy flowed through his body and gathered around his core. Deep within him, the black flame flickered weakly, almost appearing as exhausted as Victor himself.
Then something changed.
Warmth slowly spread through his body.
Victor remained still.
Minutes passed.
Then hours.
He continued cultivating.
The pain didn’t disappear, but it gradually became easier to tolerate. His breathing stabilized. The blood that had continued to seep from his stomach slowly began to stop.
Eventually, Victor opened his eyes.
Victor stared at the wounds.
It hadn’t magically erased his injuries.
But it had kept the worst of them from becoming fatal.
His arm, however, was another matter entirely.
Victor looked toward it.
It still hung uselessly at his side.
He sighed.
"I won’t be using this arm for awhile."
He had no idea how long.
Victor wasn’t a doctor. He had no idea how quickly a shattered arm would heal, even with his bloodline helping him recover. All he knew was that he wasn’t going to be using it anytime soon.
After resting for several more minutes, Victor slowly uncrossed his legs and pushed himself onto his knees. He planted his right hand against the wall and carefully forced himself upward.
And for the first time since waking up, Victor finally looked around.
He froze.
This wasn’t a natural cave.
His eyes slowly moved across the surroundings.
The walls were made from stone, but they had clearly been cut and shaped by human hands. The ceiling was supported by old wooden beams, most of them darkened and partially decayed after countless years of neglect. Dust covered nearly everything.
Broken furniture was scattered throughout the room.
Victor stared.
He had gone from running through an enormous underground forest...
To standing inside what looked like a cellar.
"What the hell..."
His voice echoed softly.
The place had clearly been abandoned for an incredibly long time.
Victor could see it everywhere he looked. Wooden shelves had collapsed under their own weight. Containers that might have once held food or supplies had rotted away completely. Pieces of broken furniture were scattered across the floor, their original purpose almost impossible to determine.
And yet the structure itself remained.
Victor slowly walked forward, carefully placing one foot in front of the other.
The more he explored, the more the place began to resemble a small underground living space rather than a simple cellar. There was an area that appeared to have once contained several beds, though only broken frames and decayed pieces of wood remained. Another room looked like it had once been used as a kitchen.
A large stone cooking area sat against one wall.
The place was decently sized.
Large enough for several people to have lived here.
Victor frowned.
Who had lived here?
And how long ago?
His attention moved across the room again.
That’s when something caught his eye.
A piece of old material hung crookedly against one of the walls.
Victor slowly approached.
At first, he assumed it was simply another piece of ruined cloth. But as he got closer, he realized there were markings across its surface.
A map.
Or at least...
Part of one.
Victor carefully reached toward it with his good hand.
The material was ancient and fragile. The upper portion had been completely destroyed, leaving only the lower half intact. Whatever information had once been displayed there was gone forever.
Victor studied what remained.
Unlike the maps he remembered from Earth, there were no names or written instructions. Instead, everything had been illustrated.
Symbols.
Pictures.
Landscapes.
At first, most of it looked meaningless.
Then Victor noticed something familiar.
His eyes narrowed.
One side of the surviving map showed a forest.
Vegetation had been carefully drawn across the surface, along with areas that appeared to have once been deliberately maintained.
His attention shifted to the right.
There was a large circular structure.
Victor stared at it.
The design reminded him of an ancient colosseum. Large pillars surrounded an open central platform, almost like a training ground.
Victor slowly looked upward.
Then back toward the map.
The realization settled in.
That was where he had fallen.
Or at least, it had to be.
His eyes moved farther down.
A river.
Victor immediately recognized it.
The shape wound through the map before eventually reaching what looked like a waterfall.
His mind began putting everything together.
The river he had followed.
The waterfall where he had been staying.
The training grounds above him.
They were all here.
On the map.
Victor stood silently as he continued studying it.
Then his attention returned to the forest.
Something about it bothered him.
The map clearly showed vegetation and trees, but it looked organized. Contained. Nothing like the enormous, wild forest that existed now.
Victor slowly frowned.
Thousands of years could change a lot.
Maybe the forest had simply grown.
Maybe whatever had once existed here had eventually been swallowed by vegetation and forgotten.
Or maybe...
There was something else.
Victor shook his head.
He didn’t have enough information.
Not yet.
Then his eyes caught something else.
A symbol.
Victor leaned closer.
At the center of the map was what looked like an alchemical flask. It was held upside down by a hand, and liquid appeared to be dripping from its opening.
Victor stared at it.
The symbol was strangely beautiful.
Every line had been carefully designed, creating something that looked less like a simple mark and more like a piece of art.
But there was something unmistakable about it.
Alchemy.
An alchemist’s symbol?
Something belonging to whoever had created this place?
Victor carefully memorized the image.
The hand.
The inverted flask.
The liquid falling downward.
Then he looked toward the destroyed upper half of the map.
What had once been there?
What did the rest of the map show?
And why had someone created this entire place?
Victor eventually stepped away.
The answers weren’t going to reveal themselves simply because he continued staring at the wall.
So he began exploring the cellar again.
His footsteps echoed quietly across the stone floor as he moved into the largest room.
Then he stopped.
Something stood in the center.
Victor slowly raised his eyes.
A statue.
Even covered in dust and surrounded by centuries of destruction, it immediately commanded his attention.
Victor stood completely still.
For some reason, he had the strange feeling that whatever mystery this place held...
It began there.
