Chapter 83: Chapter 83 — A Nasty One
Chapter 83 — A Nasty One
Victor looked across at the Shadow Fox.
She stood roughly fifteen feet away from him, her twin blades still held loosely in her hands.
Victor’s expression remained serious.
But then a faint smile appeared on his face.
"A little hostile, aren’t we?"
The Shadow Fox’s eyes narrowed.
Before she could respond, Victor disappeared.
Flash Step.
His body blurred across the distance.
In the blink of an eye, he appeared directly in front of her.
The Shadow Fox’s eyes widened.
She hadn’t expected him to move that quickly.
Victor didn’t give her time to recover.
His fist shot straight toward her face.
She reacted instantly.
One of her arms came up, knocking his fist aside before it could connect.
Victor’s eyes flicked toward her.
Fast.
The Shadow Fox twisted her body.
Her movement flowed naturally into a spinning slash.
One blade swept toward Victor’s neck.
Victor immediately pulled his head back.
The blade passed just inches from his throat.
He could feel the wind from it brush against his skin.
Before Victor could counter, the Shadow Fox continued her rotation.
Her second blade followed the first, cutting through the space where his body had been moments earlier.
Victor dashed backward, putting distance between them.
The Shadow Fox stopped spinning.
Her purple eyes remained locked onto him.
Victor stared at her for a moment.
She hadn’t hesitated.
There was no wasted movement in her attacks.
Every motion seemed to naturally flow into the next.
Victor suddenly pushed off the ground.
He slid forward, lowering his body as his leg swept toward her ankles.
The Shadow Fox reacted immediately.
She jumped.
Victor’s foot passed beneath her.
For a brief moment, her body was suspended in the air.
Victor planted both hands against the ground.
Using the momentum from his slide, he pushed himself upward.
His body folded low before his legs shot into the air.
His foot rose toward her chin.
The Shadow Fox’s eyes widened slightly.
She twisted her body in midair.
Victor’s foot passed just beneath her jaw.
Damn.
She had managed to react even while airborne.
Victor barely had time to register it.
Then—
She disappeared.
Victor’s eyes widened.
He recognized the technique.
Shadow Step
A dark blur appeared beneath a nearby tree.
The Shadow Fox stood there as though she had never moved.
Victor barely had time to land before she vanished again.
His instincts screamed.
He turned.
The Shadow Fox appeared behind him.
One of her blades flashed toward his neck.
Victor ducked.
The blade sliced through the air above his head.
He felt the sharp edge pass close enough to raise the hairs on the back of his neck.
Victor immediately reached backward.
His hand caught her wrist.
The Shadow Fox’s eyes widened.
Victor twisted his body and pulled.
Her feet left the ground.
He threw her over his shoulder.
Her body flew through the air.
Victor followed the motion, intending to slam her into the ground.
But the Shadow Fox twisted.
Her body rotated in midair.
At the last moment, she released herself from Victor’s grip and landed on her feet.
Her boots barely made a sound against the ground.
The instant her feet touched the earth, one of her blades shot toward Victor’s chest.
Victor sidestepped.
The blade passed dangerously close to his torso.
He stepped inside her guard.
The Shadow Fox’s eyes widened.
Victor leaned forward.
Bang!
His forehead slammed into hers.
The impact forced her head backward.
The Shadow Fox stumbled several steps before regaining her balance.
Victor immediately regained his stance.
The two stared at each other.
Neither moved.
For several seconds, the forest was completely silent.
The Shadow Fox slowly touched her forehead.
Her expression had changed.
She had expected the human to be weak.
She had been wrong.
He was good.
Far better than she had expected.
More importantly, he was difficult to predict.
Every time she changed her approach, he adapted.
He didn’t fight like someone with years of refined martial training.
His movements were rough.
Sometimes even strange.
But they were effective.
The Shadow Fox glanced toward the Lava Rock Monkey.
The large monkey had already gotten back onto his feet.
He was still rubbing his jaw, but he was clearly recovering.
She looked back at Victor.
If she continued fighting, the monkey would eventually join in.
She didn’t know how strong he truly was, but she had no intention of finding out while already dealing with this human.
The Shadow Fox lowered her blades slightly.
She stared at Victor for another moment.
She could probably defeat him.
But it wouldn’t be easy.
And she wasn’t willing to risk serious injuries.
"We’ll continue this another time, human."
Victor’s eyes narrowed.
Before he could respond, her body blurred.
She vanished into the shadows.
Victor remained still.
He waited.
A few seconds passed.
He carefully scanned the surrounding forest.
She was gone.
Only then did Victor relax.
He reached up and rubbed the side of his neck.
The cut from earlier had already stopped bleeding.
The blood had dried against his skin.
Victor wiped it away with his fingers.
"That woman..."
Footsteps sounded behind him.
Victor turned.
The Lava Rock Monkey was slowly walking toward him.
The massive man stopped a few feet away.
Then he gave Victor a wide grin.
"I appreciate the help, friend."
He glanced toward the forest where the Shadow Fox had disappeared.
"That Shadow Fox is a nasty one."
Victor looked at him for a moment.
I didn’t really have much of a choice.
Still, he gave the monkey a small nod.
"Don’t worry about it."
The monkey laughed.
Then he held out his hand.
"The name’s Monkasa."
Victor looked at the offered hand for a moment before grabbing it.
"Pleasure to meet you. I’m Victor."
Monkasa’s grin widened.
"Victor, huh?"
He released Victor’s hand.
Victor took a moment to think.
The lava rock region.
That was where he had been trying to go this entire time.
He had spent hours following the map, only to lose his way after the Jagged Wasp incident.
And now, somehow, he had ended up meeting someone from the very place he was trying to find.
Looks like I got pretty lucky with this encounter.
Monkasa suddenly slapped a hand against his stomach.
"Since you saved my butt back there, why don’t I treat you to a meal?"
Victor raised an eyebrow.
"A meal?"
"Yeah."
Monkasa grinned.
Victor thought about it for a moment.
Then he smiled.
"Sure. Let’s do it."
Monkasa turned around and started walking.
Victor followed behind him.
The two disappeared into the forest, heading toward the lava rock region.
