Chapter 86: Chapter 86 — The Monkey Fist Stele

Chapter 86 — The Monkey Fist Stele

Victor and Monkasa eventually arrived at the training grounds.

Monkasa led Victor toward a large wooden house sitting on the ground.

The building was fairly big, and as they stepped inside, Victor couldn’t help but feel like he had walked into some kind of guild hall.

Lava Rock Monkeys were scattered throughout the room.

Some were sitting together and talking.

Others were quietly cultivating.

A few were gathered around discussing the Monkey Fist technique.

Victor’s eyes wandered across the room as Monkasa led him toward the counter.

An old Lava Rock Monkey sat behind it.

His gray hair was beginning to thin, and wrinkles covered parts of his weathered face. He looked like someone who had been alive for a very long time.

Monkasa approached the counter.

"Hey, Monkola."

The old monkey opened his eyes and smiled.

"Ah, hello, boy. How have you been?"

"I’ve been good. I’ve been good. I just recently hit the Beginner Rank in the Monkey Fist technique."

Monkola smiled.

"Ah, that’s good. You’ve been training hard."

He looked toward Victor.

"Well, who’s this?"

Monkasa glanced toward Victor.

"Ah, this is Victor. He wanted to apply to join the Monkey ranking system."

Monkola looked at Victor.

"Ah, well hello there, Victor. Nice to meet you."

Victor nodded.

"Pleasure to meet you as well."

Monkola smiled.

"It doesn’t take much to join. More than anything, it’s the willingness."

He leaned back slightly.

"By joining, you’re agreeing to fight. Anybody in the Monkey ranking system can be challenged at any time, especially those ranked lower than you."

Victor nodded.

"I understand."

"Good."

Monkola reached beneath the counter and pulled out a small pad of ink.

He placed it in front of Victor.

"Stick your hand in there."

Victor did as he was told.

He pressed his ink-covered hand against a sheet of paper.

Victor looked at the mark left behind.

He assumed this was simply the Lava Rock Monkeys’ way of signing things.

Once it was finished, Monkola handed him a small metal card.

Victor looked down at it.

A single number was engraved across its surface.

289

Victor stared at the number for a moment.

A small smile appeared on his face.

"Thank you."

Monkola nodded.

"Well, if that’s all, I’m going back to taking my nap. You two have fun."

The old monkey leaned back in his chair and closed his eyes.

Monkasa turned toward Victor.

"Come on."

He led Victor toward one of the walls.

A massive ranking board covered most of it.

Hundreds of names filled the board, beginning with the highest-ranked fighters at the top and continuing downward.

Monkasa found the very bottom.

He picked up a piece of chalk and wrote Victor’s name beside the number 289.

Then he stepped back.

"You’re officially part of the ranking battles."

Victor looked at his name.

He had officially entered the system.

Monkasa grinned.

"Now we can go check out the Monkey Fist Stele."

Victor nodded.

The two left the hall and headed straight for the stele.

It didn’t take long before they arrived.

The area around the stone was crowded with Lava Rock Monkeys.

They weren’t fighting.

Instead, they were sitting throughout the surrounding area, many with their eyes closed as they cultivated while facing the stele.

It almost looked as though they were trying to gain enlightenment from it.

Victor and Monkasa walked through the crowd until they found a spot close enough to see the stele clearly.

Monkasa sat down.

Victor followed, sitting beside him.

For the first time, Victor got a proper look at the Monkey Fist Stele.

His eyes immediately moved toward the bottom.

There it was.

The upside-down flask.

Victor’s heart skipped a beat.

Monkasa had been telling the truth.

The symbol really was here.

Victor stared at it for several moments.

So I’m in the right place.

The thought filled him with excitement.

If the symbol was here, then there was a good chance Monkasa had been right about the lava pool as well.

The lava pool.

The Prime Ape’s cultivation chamber.

Victor’s eyes narrowed.

If the lava pool really was inside the Prime Ape’s cultivation chamber, then there was only one way for him to find out what was waiting there.

He needed to become the Prime Ape.

But first...

If he wanted to become the Prime Ape, he was going to need to become much stronger.

Victor turned his attention back toward the stele.

He began studying the Monkey Fist technique.

It didn’t take long for him to understand its basic structure.

There were three stages.

Beginner.

Intermediate.

Advanced.

Each stage allowed the user to draw out a greater amount of strength from the technique.

The first stage was simply learning how to properly use it.

Beginner.

Victor’s eyes narrowed slightly.

The description immediately reminded him of the fight he had witnessed from the elevator.

Those strange steps.

The awkward movement.

The gradual gathering of Spiritual Energy.

Then the final punch.

It matched perfectly.

Victor understood the technique quickly, but understanding it was one thing.

Learning it was another.

A technique like this wouldn’t be mastered in an instant.

It would take time.

Victor remained seated beside Monkasa.

Neither of them spoke.

The sounds of the surrounding monkeys slowly faded into the background as Victor continued staring at the Monkey Fist Stele.

For now, he simply watched.

And learned.

The two of them remained there for several hours.

Victor’s eyes never left the stele.

He studied every movement described in the technique, trying to understand how the strange footwork was supposed to draw Spiritual Energy into his fist.

The explanation seemed simple enough.

Move his feet.

Build momentum.

Allow the Spiritual Energy to follow that movement, spiraling through his body like a tornado before converging into his fist.

Then release it.

Victor tried to understand the process again and again.

But no matter how many times he read through the technique, something wasn’t clicking.

He couldn’t feel the energy moving the way the technique described.

He couldn’t create the spiral.

And without that, he couldn’t even begin to properly execute the first stage.

Hours passed.

Victor eventually leaned back slightly.

I made almost no progress.

Normally, once he understood how something worked, he could at least begin experimenting with it.

But this was different.

Understanding the theory wasn’t enough.

His body needed to understand it as well.

Victor turned his head toward Monkasa.

The Lava Rock Monkey was already looking at him.

A small smile appeared on Monkasa’s face.

"You’re probably getting pretty tired."

Victor blinked.

"Yeah, a little."

Monkasa stood up.

"Let’s find you somewhere to stay for the night."

Victor looked at him.

"Find me somewhere to stay?"

"Yeah."

Monkasa stretched his arms.

"There are a bunch of extra empty houses around here. We can find one for you to stay in."

Victor nodded.

"That sounds simple enough."

Monkasa grinned.

"It is."

The two stood up and began making their way back toward the massive tree system where the Lava Rock Monkeys lived.

Victor glanced back at the Monkey Fist Stele one last time.

He still couldn’t understand it.

But he had a feeling he would be spending a lot more time staring at that stone.
