SLASH!
The blade came down, and total darkness followed.
Ronan didn't just cleave the Drowned God in half; he split the entire island. A perfect, searing line carved straight through its center, the sand along the cut flash-melting into glass. The surrounding water hissed and pulled back, steaming away from the heat of that single stroke.
[Area Cleared]
[Calculating All Loot]
"W-Woah..."
Allysane stood at the edge of the devastation, the lower half of her outfit dusted with sand kicked up by the shockwave. Her golden eyes were wide, fixed on the glowing furrow Ronan had left in the earth.
"You really were worth the money."
Ronan rolled his shoulder and sheathed his sword.
"Can't really show off much. It was way too weak."
Allysane didn't respond. He glanced back. Her face had gone pale. She was staring at her system screen, her lips parted, her expression caught somewhere between shock and dread.
"What happened?"
She didn't answer right away. Her fingers trembled slightly as she closed the window, then she finally looked at him.
"It's the eastern front..."
Her voice came out thin, like she could barely believe the words herself.
"They're all dead."

The journey back to the entrance was quieter than either of them expected. Their mission had been a success, but the other front hadn't been so lucky.
Allysane walked in silence, and Ronan found himself reversing their usual dynamic, trying to offer some comfort as they made their way back.
"It's not your fault."
"I know. The arrangement was supposed to put them in danger, not us. But..."
She sighed, letting her shoulders sag. She seemed less shaken than Ronan had initially thought. Her personality had made him forget she was still an S-Rank Hunter.
She'd probably lost other parties before. Maybe more than once. But even if the pain dulled over time, it never really went away.
"I'll take care of them. Don't worry."
"No." Allysane let out a small, tired giggle. "I've already seen enough."
She looked at him, and her smile felt deadly genuine.
"Let's kill them together."
They kept walking, the shoreline stretching ahead as they neared the ravine's entrance. But even before they reached it, Ronan felt it, five distinct presences approaching, each one radiating enough power to leave no doubt.
S-Ranks. All of them.
They'd already abandoned the eastern front and were moving to intercept them here.
"That's going to be a problem..."
Allysane muttered, and a second later, the sky lit up.
A massive fireball roared toward them, crossing the distance in seconds. But Allysane was faster, absurdly faster.
A wall of water erupted in front of them, meeting the fireball head-on with a hiss of steam and pressure. The impact shook the ground, but the barrier held.
"Nice reaction."
Ronan drew his sword. The dragon fire along the blade flared brighter, as if it could sense the approaching enemies. Allysane was already falling into position beside him, her hands raised, water gathering around her like a living cloak.
"Think you can handle two on your own?" she asked.
"Easily. But I think we should make this a free-for-all."
Allysane laughed. "Just don't die on me."
The five Dark Guardians emerged from the treeline in a loose wedge. They moved in perfect sync, the two wand-wielders at the back, the archer perched on a rock, the swordsman and glaive-user out front.
The two of them could tell they were built to kill.
"Go."
Ronan vanished.
He reappeared behind the archer, sword already mid-swing. The creature twisted, impossibly fast, bringing its bow up to block. The dragon blade sheared through the weapon and continued into its chest, cleaving it in two.
One down.
The glaive-user spun toward him, the polearm cutting through the space where Ronan had stood. He let it pass, stepping inside its reach, and drove the burning sword through its sternum.
Two down.
The sword-user was already moving, its blade descending in a two-handed overhead strike. Ronan caught the flat of the blade with his palm, let the force shatter against his skin, and snapped his foot into the creature's knee.
It crumbled. He finished it with a horizontal slash through the neck.
Three down.
The two wand-wielders turned their attention from Allysane and fired in unison. A combined beam of black energy, thick enough to vaporize stone.
[Abyssal Breath]
The dark torrent poured from his mouth and met the beam head-on. The collision detonated, shredding the ground between them, but Ronan was already moving through it. He came out the other side with his sword leading, and the first wand-wielder died before it could cast again.
Four down.
The second one retreated, wand raised, but Allysane was already there. A spiraling lance of pressurized water punched through its skull and out the other side.
Five down.
Ronan sheathed his sword and looked around. The battlefield was a ruin. Allysane stood a few feet away, breathing hard but smiling, her water still coiling around her like serpents.
"You killed four..." she said, her voice caught between awe and disbelief. "Four opponents that supposedly wiped out an entire front."
Ronan was about to reply when he felt it, a wrongness stirring in her shadow.
FWOOSH!
He moved without thinking, grabbing Allysane by the waist and pulling her back. She gasped, arms flying around his neck as he yanked her off her feet.
BOOM!
The spot where she'd been standing erupted in a geyser of pure darkness. The ground cracked, splintered, and the air itself seemed to shriek. Ronan landed several meters away, still holding her, his eyes already scanning for the next attack.
But the attack wasn't what made his blood run cold.
The sky was changing.
The violet light above dimmed, deepening into something darker, almost black. A moon rose where none had been before, pale and sickly, casting long shadows across the dead coastline. The sparse vegetation twisted, withered, and crumbled into gray husks.
The entire gate was transforming. And Ronan recognized exactly what it was becoming.
Tartarus-B.
"We need to go," he said, his voice tight. "Now."
