The prince arrived earlier than expected. Instead of coming in the morning, as he had said, he showed up at four A.M., opening the doors to our quarters dressed in nothing but white to blend in with the snow.
"I’m surprised you two are still awake. I thought I’d need to wake you all up first."
His gaze settled on Anastasia, who was still asleep after wandering the Frostlands with hardly any rest, thanks to those fox distractions.
She had more than earned it, and the prince did not object. Her help with the trolls had been enough to make him lenient.
"But I suppose you two will do. She deserves the rest."
The prince crossed to the window and peered out at the empty, frozen garden.
"I need your rank before I can assign you a task."
"Why are you doing this yourself? Don’t you have a messenger?"
"No. Given the nature of my plan, I don’t want to risk anyone betraying me."
Ronan nodded. He didn’t ask for their exact stats, only their rank, and that was something he could provide without issue.
"S-Rank."
Ronan said it with confidence, even though he hadn’t had a rank evaluation in years. Beating Kevin was enough to justify it.
"S-Rank? Then I suppose I’ll be raising your payment."
"Are you seriously taking what I said at face value?"
"No. I can tell you’re not lying. Besides, if you’re training a girl that could kill trolls, then that means you’re already reasonably powerful."
"I’m guessing there are other clues that would show we’re not lying besides those two reasons?"
"Mhm, but I won’t elaborate on them."
The prince gave a brief reply and tossed a small gem to him. Sarael caught it with a shadowy tendril before placing it in his palm.
"It’s a coordinate stone. Go to that location and gather as much paperwork as you can. I don’t care if you slaughter the entire place, just make sure they think it came from a psychopath and not royalty."
Ronan smirked. That certainly made things easier. Murder would not be his first choice, of course, but it was reassuring to know it wasn’t forbidden.
"And for my student?"
"I’ll watch over her while you two are gone. She saved the lives of potentially dozens of elven knights. She deserves that much."
"Good for her~"
Sarael hummed at the prince’s answer, amused and pleased that her tutor in all things feminine was getting what she wanted.
Ronan pocketed the gem and glanced at Sarael. She was already moving toward the door, her shadows rippling with quiet anticipation.
"One more thing."
The prince added as Ronan reached the door.
"The location is a supply depot. It’s supposed to be secure. If someone’s been tampering with logistics, there will be records."
"And if there aren’t?"
"Then bring me whoever’s in charge. Alive, if possible. Dead, if necessary."
✧ ✦ ✧
The coordinate stone led them to a supply depot buried in the side of a frozen cliff just outside the city’s walls, its entrance disguised as a natural ice formation. Ronan and Sarael stood at the edge of the treeline, watching the facility from a safe distance.
The depot was active. Guards patrolled the perimeter, their breath misting in the cold air, and lights burned behind the frosted windows carved into the cliff face.
Only Snow Elves would be comfortable enough to have something like that as actual architecture. The cold alone would probably slow most guards.
"Four guards at the entrance," Ronan said. "Probably more inside."
"Do you want me to kill them?"
Sarael asked it the same way someone might offer to pick up groceries.
"Not yet. Let’s try the quiet way first."
Ronan summoned the ghoulish archer from before and ordered it to sprint as fast as it could from one alley to the other right in front of them.
Throwing a stone was a distraction, but it was primitive. A literal ghoulish archer made of shadows moving like something out of a ghost story, however? That was far more effective.
[Shadow Merge]
He teleported the archer just as the guards’ patrol collided at the entrance. That was when Ronan gave the order, and the archer began to move.
The guards immediately spotted the unnatural shadows shifting through the snow. The clacking of its quiver was more than enough to undermine its natural camouflage.
"Is that...?"
"What the hell?"
"Was that a wraith?"
The guards muttered to each other, but as expected, they were trained enough not to chase it down immediately.
Still, that was enough. Ronan only needed the archer to catch their eye. His unbreakable invisibility in the shadows would do the rest, allowing him to enter without being spotted.
Ronan moved through the entrance like a breath of cold air, invisible and silent. The interior was lit by the same cold lanterns that lined Frostheim’s streets.
The architecture was unmistakably elven, all curves and spiraling patterns that were carved directly into the cliff, which would have been beautiful if Ronan had time to appreciate them.
The main corridor branched into three directions.
Left led to what looked like storage rooms, crates stacked high enough to brush the ceiling. Right opened into a barracks, where the faint sound of snoring suggested at least a few guards were off-duty.
Straight ahead was a reinforced door with a heavy lock.
That was where the records would be.
Ronan pressed his back against the cold stone and waited. A guard passed within inches of him, close enough that Ronan could smell the faint frost-mint scent of elven rations on his breath.
But the man didn’t even pause.
[Lover’s Protection] held firm.
When the corridor was clear, Ronan slipped toward the reinforced door. The lock was complex, but he wasn’t planning to pick it.
[Shadow Merge]
He teleported directly behind it, lucky enough that the lights left a gap of shadow stretching from the entrance to the other side of the door.
He was now inside what looked like the most secure room in the entire place, and he hadn’t had to kill anyone yet.
Now, the problem was the paperwork itself.
There was more than Ronan had expected.
"...Guess I’m making multiple return trips."
