CLANG!
The third prince parried with his blade, using the opening to drive his sword deep into a cloaked elf’s chest. He sidestepped another blade before it could cut his shoulder, then decapitated the attacker in one clean motion.
"Has he gone insane!?"
He barked, kicking the next attacker in the chest and sending him straight into a pile of crates.
Of all the things he’d expected, an ambush in a back alley on his way to meet informants wasn’t one of them.
It was way too open and public for his brother to even attempt.
"I’m afraid so."
A voice echoed from above. A man sat on a boarded-up windowsill, well dressed in a suit despite the cold, his face hidden behind an eye mask.
Whoever he was, his attacker was arrogant enough not to bother hiding the rest of his face.
"I’m guessing my brother sent you?"
"Guess? Isn’t it obvious?"
The masked man jumped off the sill and landed on the ground without even a grunt from a four-story drop.
Whoever he was, he was definitely a hunter, a human hunter.
"Whatever my brother’s paying you. I’ll double it."
"Double?"
The attacker laughed, running a hand through his hair as he kicked over a dead body in his path.
The Third Prince didn’t wait for him to finish. He lunged, his blade aimed at the masked man’s throat.
He didn’t need to wait to know what that laugh meant.
The masked man sidestepped, faster than any human should have been able to move. The prince’s sword cut through empty air, and a fist buried itself in his ribs before he could recover.
The prince stumbled back, gasping. His armor had absorbed most of the impact, but the force behind the blow was staggering.
This wasn’t just any hunter. This was someone who’d trained to kill things far stronger than elves.
"Not bad."
The masked man said, shaking out his hand.
"You’re faster than I expected. But you’re still just a prince who’s never fought anyone stronger than himself."
"I’ve fought plenty."
"Trolls? Beasts? Other elves?"
The masked man laughed again.
"Please. Don’t be ridiculous."
He cracked his neck.
"But... honestly? I expected more."
He moved. The prince barely got his sword up in time to block the first strike, but the second caught him across the jaw. The third drove into his stomach. The fourth sent him crashing into the alley wall, his sword clattering from his grip.
The masked man stood over him, flexing his fingers.
"Any last words? I’ll pass them along to your brother. Consider it a professional courtesy."
The prince spat blood onto the snow. His vision was swimming, his ribs screaming with every breath. But his eyes were still sharp. Still defiant.
"Just one question."
"Since you’re dying anyway. Go for it."
"What’s your favorite food?"
The attacker’s mind visibly froze at the off-topic question. His mouth opened, already preparing to ask what in the world he meant, before he suddenly found his left arm detached from the rest of his body.
"W-What?"
"Sure are lucky you were ambushed in shadows. Wasn’t that hard to track you down."
Ronan’s voice echoed behind the attacker. And he didn’t even wait, attempting to regenerate his arm and grab Ronan by the face to slam him down.
But to his surprise, there was still no arm.
It hadn’t healed.
The stump that remained had been corroded by shadows.
"Poison...?"
He tried to reach for his pocket, but Anastasia was already on it, firing an enhanced bullet from her gun and severely dislocating his shoulder.
It wasn’t enough to sever it like Ronan had, but it was enough to stop him from doing what he’d planned, so Sarael’s shadow tendrils could finish the job, ripping it apart like paper.
"This is certainly unexpected..."
Ronan raised a brow at the attacker’s casualness. The man was acting like he didn’t have two of his limbs completely severed.
"You’re a tough bastard, aren’t you—?"
Ronan stopped as a sudden splash of blood hit his back. The attacker in front visibly recoiled when it happened, as if struck himself.
"Another one was hiding in your shadows...?"
The real attacker asked, staring at Sarael’s fist buried deep in his chest, gripping his heart just enough to keep him alive.
The one standing before Ronan was just a clone.
"Die."
SPLAT!
The man collapsed dead onto the snowy floor. Sarael hadn’t even given him the chance to speak, crushing his heart without hesitation.
Ronan noticed her intentions immediately. Instead of scolding her for killing a possible source of information, he patted her head.
He didn’t need her to say how she felt to know what was going on.
And he certainly wasn’t the type to go against her when she was in this mood. She had already proven before that she could still kill him when high on emotions.
"Thanks for the save, but you could’ve spared him."
The Third Prince grunted as he took Anastasia’s hand and pulled himself back to his feet, leaning against the wall to catch his breath.
"That isn’t really an option."
Anastasia replied, side-eyeing Sarael, who was staring at the dead body with sheer, utter contempt. The Third Prince swore he could feel some of that lethality directed at him as well.
And he wasn’t imagining it. Right now, Sarael was holding herself back from killing anything associated with the Second Prince.
To her, anyone tied to that dynasty deserved to be snuffed out and tortured until they understood the real meaning of pain.
And that was something Ronan still didn’t know, no matter how used to Sarael he had become.
The Third Prince wiped blood from his mouth and straightened his armor. His ribs were definitely cracked, and his jaw would be swollen for days, but he was alive.
Given the ambush, that was more than he’d expected.
"Your timing is impeccable."
He said, his voice hoarse.
"I assume this wasn’t a coincidence."
"We’ve been looking for you after dealing with our own ambush."
Ronan knelt beside the dead clone, examining the body. It was already dissolving into a dark mist, leaving nothing behind but the blood that had splattered across the snow.
But the real attacker was still there. Lying dead on Sarael’s foot.
"Figured you’d get attacked as well."
