Blessed By A Yandere Goddess

Chapter 87: The S-Rank Necromancer

"Verne, we can explain—"

"Oh, shut up, Tristan. I’ve seen enough."

At the name Verne, Ronan’s spine seemed to fold in on itself. He knew that name; everyone who followed hunter news in the past few years knew it.

The S-Rank Necromancer.

The one who had held back an unstable gate. The same man Ronan had gushed about when he first tested Sebastian.

"Verne...?"

Ronan muttered. Verne wasn’t just a prodigy like Kevin; he had experience to match his talent. Ten years spent entering portals and turning that experience into power.

His stats and level far surpassed Kevin’s. He was even the first S-Rank considered for elevation to a hypothetical SS-Rank, a rank the Association had refused to establish.

"Oh, it seems like you know me. Then I’m sure you know how I like to handle things."

He glanced around to confirm the streets were empty before looking back at them. He had been investigating Tristan and Yeula for a while now, ever since they convinced the higher-ups that the two of them should focus on one specific fixer.

It was suspicious, to say the least, especially since the two of them never returned enough worthwhile information to justify turning down other jobs from other fixers.

"Your two inside men have been sloppy, Shadow Porter."

Tristan’s jaw tightened.

"We didn’t—"

"You did. I’ve been watching you for two weeks. And tonight, I think I’ve gotten the full picture."

He snapped his fingers, and the entire street filled with the sound of rattling bones. The rooftops were packed with summons, as were the alleys and even a few apartments.

The entire area had been locked down from the start.

The necromancer had only meant for them to serve as extra eyes; what he hadn’t expected was for Ronan and Sarael to run into them and confirm their identities aloud.

Sarael had masked their appearance when they went out. But she hadn’t done the same for their voices; her abilities weren’t strong enough yet.

"I’m here to bring all four of you into custody. Any attempt to escape or resist will result in lethal force."

Verne said it flatly, more to avoid legal trouble than out of any real concern for the people in front of him. He had been in the business for years.

He knew the drill.

Ronan’s mind raced.

Verne. The Verne. The necromancer whose old clip he’d watched dozens of times. And now that hunter was standing in front of him, threatening to arrest all of them.

"Sarael."

He kept his voice low, barely a whisper.

"Can you teleport all four of us out of here?"

Sarael didn’t answer. She suspected the S-Rank in front of them would be perceptive enough to hear her, so she acted without replying and began teleporting.

But Verne wasn’t an S-Rank for nothing.

"Immobilitas."

He declared, and a wave of sickly green washed across the entire street. The shadows beneath Sarael’s feet writhed, completely preventing the teleportation.

"Nice try, but that won’t work."

Verne smiled, and Sarael decided to wipe that smug grin off his face with a tendril to the back of his head. But he turned and caught it with one hand before it could do any harm.

"Incredible use of ranged shadows... so this is how you managed to kill them back in the interrogation room."

Ronan wasn’t sure if he could take him on. Tristan and Yeula definitely couldn’t, but he and Sarael were a different story entirely. Sarael was a goddess, and he was on par with an S-Rank.

But Verne was theoretically an SS-Rank by hunter-gossip standards.

Ronan didn’t want to risk it. The mind that had survived Tartarus was already screaming at him to retreat immediately and not mess with the necromancer in front of him.

"Sarael, get ready to drag us out of here!"

Ronan knew Immobilitas prevented teleportation, but it definitely didn’t prevent every mobility spell in existence.

Especially not something as flexible as Sarael’s manipulation of shadows.

"Drag you out...? How do you suppose to do that? I’ve got you two surrounded—"

[Flesh Golem]

Verne didn’t get to finish as Ronan summoned the beast from the sky. Verne immediately snapped his mouth shut when he saw the colossal behemoth emerge from the darkness in the gap between the stars.

And it was falling fast and furious, at twice the strength of one that could crush S-Rank hunters.

Verne knew trouble when he saw it.

"Sweet mother of—"

"Sarael, now!"

Ronan screamed as the shadows beneath all of them climbed up to encase them like a cocoon as they escaped as flying spheres.

But Verne anticipated it, enclosing their exit while keeping his eye on the biggest thing on the battlefield.

Even so, the moment of distraction gave Sarael enough opening to break through his defensive line with sheer force, using the cocoon like a ram as they left the street entirely.

BOOM!

The golem crashed at the same time the four of them escaped. And Sarael immediately teleported them out the moment they got out of range of his teleportation blocker.

✧ ✦ ✧

THUD!

The four of them crashed gracelessly toward the forest floor, literally kilometers away from Verne and the city. Sarael had rushed the teleport but still made sure to block Ronan’s landing against a nearby tree with her own body.

The tree collapsed outright, while Sarael’s body was left untouched.

"Is everyone okay?" she asked.

She looked at Tristan and Yeula, who had taken a rougher landing than the two of them, then turned back to Ronan.

Tristan groaned from somewhere in the underbrush, and Yeula was already pushing herself up.

"We’re alive..."

Yeula managed, spitting out the leaves and dirt that got inside her mouth.

"Barely."

"What the hell did you just summon?"

Tristan was the next to stand, helping Yeula up as they both looked around at where they had ended up.

"Something that would hopefully kill him."

Ronan replied, already reassuring Sarael that she didn’t hurt him with the rushed teleportation.
