Chapter 143: 143: Saying Goodbye (2)
Jake blinked. "Me?"
"Yes."
"Why?"
"Because one day some of them may die for you. You should at least know what they were called."
Jake became quiet.
Jenny looked at Lucard for a long moment. Her face softened slightly, though sadness touched her eyes. "That was harsh."
"It was true."
Peter looked at Jake. "Young Lord, learning names is also part of leading."
Jake nodded slowly. "I will learn them."
Lucard continued, "Do not gather too many at once. Begin with ten. Watch them for stealing, lying, cruelty, fear, and obedience. Hunger makes thieves. That is expected. Cruelty makes future traitors if not corrected early. If they can be corrected, keep them. If not, release them before they learn too much."
Jenny picked up a blank paper and began writing. "Ten orphans. Age fifteen and above. Basic food and bedding. Peter and Brant training. Records under my control."
Lucard nodded. "Good."
Brant asked, "Where should we find them?"
"Not from one street," Lucard said. "Spread the search. Gravehold has graveyard children, market children, abandoned servant children, and children of dead hunters. Take Lysa for scouting. She knows how to speak with rough people better than noble servants do. But she does not go alone. Two Ash Wolf members go with her."
Brant accepted the order. "Yes."
Peter looked at Lucard. "Young Master, with respect, teaching orphans while recovering may slow my aura practice."
"It will help it."
Peter paused. "How?"
"Crimson Guardian Sword is a guard sword. You grow faster when you understand what stands behind you. Teaching weak children will irritate you. Protecting them during training will steady you. When they fall, you will learn patience. When they fear, you will learn pressure control. When they improve, your aura will learn what it means to stand as a wall."
Peter absorbed those words carefully.
Lucard added, "Also, it keeps you from doing something stupid while I am gone."
Jake nodded seriously. "That is important."
Peter looked at him.
Jake quickly looked away.
Jenny almost smiled.
For a moment, the room felt like a family again. Not safe. Not whole. But alive.
Then Jenny placed the pen down. "When are you leaving?"
"Tonight."
Jake stood up again. "Tonight?"
"Yes."
"That is too fast."
"No. It is already late."
Jenny’s face became tense. "You just spent three days keeping Peter alive. You have not rested."
"I do not need much rest."
"That does not mean you need none."
Lucard looked at her. "If I stay longer, more people will know my routine. More eyes will mark the house. More questions will gather around where I go and who I speak with. Leaving quickly is cleaner."
Brant said, "Do you want escorts?"
"No."
Peter immediately objected. "Young Master, traveling alone is dangerous."
Lucard looked at him. "For other people."
Peter pressed his lips together. He wanted to argue, but even he knew normal guards would only slow Lucard down. The enemies who could threaten Lucard would not be stopped by weak escorts. The enemies who could be stopped by escorts were not worth taking escorts for.
Jenny asked, "Will you tell us where you are going?"
"No."
Her eyes hardened.
Lucard added before she could speak, "If you do not know, no one can force it from you. That is safer."
Jenny hated the answer because it made sense.
Jake looked down. "Will you come back?"
Lucard looked at him. "Yes."
"When?"
"As soon as possible."
"You said that before."
"And I returned."
Jake could not argue with that, so he only sat down again with an unhappy face.
Lucard walked to the table and placed a small pouch beside Jenny’s papers. "Emergency gold coins. Do not spend them unless Peter, Brant, and you agree together. Use Marovain credit for normal needs until the remaining nine million gold coins arrive. If Robi delays too long, remind him politely once. If he delays after that, tell him I will return."
Jenny looked at the pouch, then at him. "You think that will work?"
"Yes."
Brant’s mouth twitched slightly.
Lucard placed another folded paper on the table. "This contains training rules for Peter and Brant to follow. It also contains house safety rules. Copy them by hand. Do not let servants take the original."
Jenny picked up the paper. "You prepared this already."
"Yes."
"You decided before telling us."
"I decided after Peter survived."
Peter lowered his head. "Young Master, is my breakthrough the reason you feel safe enough to leave?"
"One reason," Lucard said. "Not the only one. The decree protects the city. Imperial guards are now posted here. The royal office is watching Gravehold. Robi will not allow trouble near his own gifted house because it would shame Marovain. Velkhur cannot attack openly. Ravencroft is frightened. Karswell is hiding. Brant and Peter can protect the house from ordinary danger. Jenny can manage people. Jake can learn."
He looked at them one by one.
"I will send messages often."
Jenny’s expression softened at that.
That difference mattered.
Jenny stood and walked to him. For a moment, Lucard thought she might scold him again. Instead, she adjusted the collar of his black coat, the way an older sister might prepare a younger brother before a journey.
"Come back uninjured," she said.
Lucard looked down at her hands.
"I will."
Jake came around the table and hugged him.
Lucard became still.
Jake’s voice was muffled against his coat. "Do not take too long."
Lucard looked at Jenny over Jake’s head. She did not rescue him from the hug.
So he placed one hand awkwardly on Jake’s shoulder. "Train while I am gone."
"I will."
"Listen to Jenny."
"I will."
"Do not annoy Peter while he heals."
Jake hesitated. "I will try."
"That is not enough."
Jake sighed. "I will not annoy Peter while he heals."
Peter said from his chair, "Thank you, Young Lord."
Brant lowered his head. "Young Master, I will guard them with my life."
Lucard’s eyes moved to him. The sleeping egg inside Brant’s body pulsed quietly under Lucard’s distant sense.
"I know," Lucard said.
Brant did not understand the full meaning, but he accepted the words as trust.
Lucard looked at Peter. "Recover. Train. Teach. Protect."
Peter forced himself to sit straighter. "Yes, Young Master."
Lucard left the study, but he did not leave the house immediately.
He returned to his room and closed the door behind him. A small travel bag waited on the table. He opened it and checked everything with quiet patience. Two sets of plain dark clothes, a thin cloak without any family mark, a small knife, bandages, dried meat, a water pouch, writing paper, ink, and a pouch of gold coins. He did not take anything that would make him look rich. A traveler with too much wealth invited thieves, questions, and wasted time.
After that, he opened a bag and took out a map of the lands around Gravehold. He spread it across the table and looked over the roads, forests, old ruins, hunting regions, and villages. His finger stopped near the eastern road first. Then it moved toward the old knight grounds Peter had mentioned, then toward a monster hunting area marked near a broken border fort after the next city.
Places with blood.
Places with danger.
Places where desperate people gathered.
Those were the places where Lucard could grow.
He folded the map and placed it inside his coat. Then he sat down and closed his eyes. His blood sense moved inward. The unnamed mother blood bug slept inside the blood chamber near his heart. Three parasite eggs remained hidden near it. Two had already been placed inside Brant and Lysa. The remaining three would be kept for better use on the road.
Lucard sent a quiet command through his blood.
"Sleep. Eat. Wait."
The blood bug obeyed.
Then Lucard checked his own condition. His body was steady. His wounds were gone. His strength had reached Level Twenty Nine, only one step away from the Third Blood Circle, Blood Mage Vessel. That one step mattered more than comfort. If he stayed in Gravehold and waited under imperial protection, he would only become a guarded piece on someone else’s board.
Lucard did not like being anyone’s piece.
He changed into plain black travel clothes and wore a rough cloak over them. Then he used a small blood-shape spell on his face. His cheeks became slightly thinner. The line of his jaw changed a little. His eyes looked more tired. It was not a full disguise, but it was enough that a careless person would not connect him to the Mudblood Heir too quickly.
Before leaving, he wrote one more note and placed it on the desk.
Do not leave the city.
Do not trust sudden invitations.
Do not answer questions about the seal.
Train every day.
Build the house before I return.
He looked at the note once, then turned away.
In the corridor, a servant lowered his head. Lucard stopped beside him and said, "No one enters my room unless Jenny commands it. If anyone asks where I went, you know nothing."
"Yes, Young Master."
Lucard walked through the hall and reached the back door. For a moment, he listened to the house behind him. Peter’s breathing was weak but stable. Brant was speaking to the night guards near the yard. Lysa was helping organize the Ash Wolf watch. Jenny and Jake were upstairs.
The house was still fragile.
But it was no longer helpless.
Lucard opened the back door and stepped outside.
Beyond Gravehold waited enemies, monsters, blood, and the strength he needed.
He pulled the cloak over his shoulders and disappeared into the evening streets.
