Blood on the Canvas, Gold on the Screen
Chapter 179: The Preemptive TrophyChapter 178: The Preemptive Trophy
Trousdale Estates, Los Angeles. Tuesday, 2:00 PM PST.
There is a profound, almost terrifying difference between a momentary pause in a frantic schedule and true, permanent stasis.
In the high-octane ecosystem of 1996 Hollywood, true stasis was considered a myth. Even billionaires on vacation carried heavy satellite phones and spent hours screaming at their brokers from the decks of their yachts. But inside the mid-century fortress hovering above the Los Angeles basin, stasis was not a myth. It was a biologically enforced, heavily guarded reality.
The newly activated [The Velvet Anchor: Level 1] passive trait was operating with silent, reality-bending efficiency.
The sprawling living room was bathed in the soft, diffused light of the California afternoon. The heavy, automated blackout drapes were retracted just enough to allow a warm, golden glow to wash over the pristine white terrazzo floors, intentionally avoiding the center of the room.
In the heart of the fourteen-by-fourteen-foot espresso-colored Italian linen megalith, Alex Turner lay in a state of absolute, flawless hibernation.
He was wearing a fresh set of unbranded, midnight-blue Loro Piana cashmere loungewear. His breathing was a slow, hypnotic rhythm. The system trait didn’t just repair his muscles; it actively halted the biological aging process of stress. There was not a single micro-expression of tension on his remarkably handsome face. He looked like an apex predator perfectly preserved in amber.
Surrounding him in the plush, down-filled arena, the Harem Council was experiencing the miraculous side effects of the Emperor’s aura.
Jennifer Aniston lay on her stomach, her bare legs kicked up behind her. She was casually flipping through a thick, glossy architectural digest. For the first time since she had booked her record-breaking sitcom, she hadn’t looked at a clock in forty-eight hours.
To her right, Monica Bellucci was gracefully reclining against a mountain of silk pillows, her dark eyes closed as she listened to the faint, rhythmic trickling of the zero-edge pool outside the open sliding glass doors.
Mariah Carey sat cross-legged near Alex’s feet, holding a delicate ceramic cup of herbal tea. The Queen of Pop looked radiant. The chronic inflammation that used to plague her vocal cords after recording sessions was entirely gone, chemically purged by the hyperbaric field of peace.
"It has been three days," Mariah whispered softly, her honey-colored eyes scanning the silent room. "Richard hasn’t called. The fax machine hasn’t made a single sound. I think the industry actually believes we disappeared off the face of the earth."
Jennifer turned a page in her magazine, a lazy, contented smile touching her lips. "They don’t think we disappeared, Mary. They know exactly where we are. They are just mathematically terrified to breach the perimeter. Alex explicitly told Richard to initiate a total communications blackout. A blackout means any attempt to contact us is treated as a hostile act."
Monica opened her eyes, a dark, incredibly amused smirk pulling at her features.
"The entire continent of Europe is currently paralyzed because I refuse to return my agent’s phone calls," the Italian cinematic icon murmured, her rich accent thick in the quiet air. "The Venice Film Festival committee sent a handwritten letter to my old apartment in Rome, begging me to attend. I instructed my former housekeeper to throw it in the trash. The liberation is... intoxicating."
In the center of the cushions, Alex Turner shifted his weight microscopically. He didn’t open his eyes, but a low, resonant hum vibrated from his chest.
"Film festivals require standing on cobblestones in expensive footwear, Monica," Alex drawled lazily, his deep baritone rolling smoothly over the linen. "Cobblestones are an archaic, ergonomically disastrous form of paving. We do not engage with bad infrastructure."
Jennifer giggled, reaching out to gently trace the hem of his cashmere t-shirt. "You’re awake, Mr. CEO. Or are you just sleep-talking about municipal paving standards again?"
"I am hovering in a state of advanced metabolic equilibrium, Jen," Alex corrected, keeping his eyes firmly shut. "And I am actively ignoring the fact that my internal clock suggests it is time for an afternoon snack. Chewing requires jaw engagement."
Before the Council could debate the caloric expenditure of retrieving a pastry from the kitchen, the absolute silence of the fortress was pierced by a soft, discreet electronic chime from the Vanguard intercom panel near the front entryway.
Alex let out a long, heavy groan of profound spiritual agony.
"The Iron Curtain is apparently malfunctioning," Alex complained blindly to the ceiling. "Thorne knows the blackout protocol. This is a Tier-One violation of my peace."
Jennifer seamlessly transitioned into her role as the apex gatekeeper. She slid out of the linen pit with frictionless grace, padding barefoot across the cool terrazzo floor to the teakwood wall panel.
"Report, Thorne," Jennifer whispered, her tone dropping into a cool, impenetrable register.
"Ms. Aniston. I sincerely apologize for the localized disruption," Elias Thorne’s crisp, digitized voice filtered through the speaker. The ex-Secret Service commander did not sound panicked, but there was a distinct note of dry, professional disbelief in his tone. "The perimeter remains secure. However, we have a highly anomalous diplomatic situation at the base of Loma Vista Drive."
"Define anomalous, Thorne," Jennifer instructed. "Did a studio executive try to climb the hill?"
"Negative, ma’am. It is not a studio executive," Thorne replied. "It is the President of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association. He is accompanied by two armed guards from a private armored transport firm. He is demanding an audience with Mr. Turner."
Jennifer frowned, her brow furrowing in confusion. The Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) were the organizers of the Golden Globe Awards. They were a notoriously elite, highly secretive cabal of international journalists who wielded immense power over the cinematic awards season.
"The Golden Globes?" Jennifer asked, looking back toward the megalith. Mariah and Monica sat up, their industry instincts momentarily flaring. "Thorne, Richard explicitly sent a rejection letter to all award circuits last week. We told them to mail the trophies to the law firm."
"I am aware of the directive, Ms. Aniston," Thorne confirmed. "However, the President of the HFPA claims he is not here to invite Mr. Turner to the ceremony. He claims he is here to proactively deliver the trophy."
The silence in the living room was absolute.
Jennifer stared at the intercom panel. "He is trying to deliver a Golden Globe to the front gate? Before the nominations have even been announced?"
"Precisely, ma’am," Thorne said, a hint of dark amusement bleeding into his professional baritone. "He stated that since Mr. Turner refuses to attend the telecast, the HFPA board held an emergency, unrecorded vote this morning. They unanimously awarded ’The Sovereign’ the Golden Globe for Best Motion Picture - Drama. He is currently standing at the barricade holding a velvet box containing the physical statue. He insists on handing it directly to the CEO as a gesture of ’profound artistic respect’."
On the Italian linen sectional, Monica Bellucci let out a sharp, breathless gasp.
"Mio Dio," Monica whispered, covering her mouth. "They are capitulating before the race even begins. They are so terrified of Alex completely delegitimizing their award show by ignoring it, they are literally driving to his house to hand him the trophy in secret just to secure his association."
It was a masterpiece of institutional desperation. The HFPA knew that if The Sovereign won an Oscar and ignored it, the Golden Globes would look entirely irrelevant if they didn’t honor the film. They were trying to buy the Slacker King’s goodwill with preemptive, unearned metal.
"Alex," Jennifer called out softly, looking at the sleeping titan. "The President of the Golden Globes is standing at the bottom of our driveway holding a trophy. He wants to give it to you."
Alex didn’t move a single muscle. His dark eyes remained closed.
The [Business Management: Level Max] trait instantly parsed the political maneuvering of the HFPA. It was a pathetic, sycophantic attempt to breach his perimeter using prestige as a Trojan Horse.
"Jen," Alex murmured lazily, his voice echoing with absolute, unyielding sovereignty. "Does the Golden Globe trophy possess a wide, flat, heavily weighted base?"
Jennifer blinked, confused by the architectural inquiry. "I... I think it’s a metal globe resting on a marble pedestal. Yes, it has a flat base."
"Excellent," Alex drawled. "Tell Thorne to accept the delivery. Do not let the HFPA President past the barricade. Do not allow him to take a photograph of the transaction. Thorne will take the box, and he will tell the President that Tyrant Group LLC graciously accepts his donation of office supplies."
"Office supplies?" Mariah giggled, walking over to stand beside Jennifer.
"Yes, Mary. Office supplies," Alex sighed sufferingly. "I instructed Richard to use the Oscars as bathroom doorstops. We can use the Golden Globe to prop open the heavy acoustic door in the tracking room when Gus comes in to sweep the floors. It will save the old man from having to wedge a piece of cardboard under the hinges."
Jennifer let out a bright, ringing laugh of pure, unadulterated joy. She pressed the intercom button.
"You heard the CEO, Thorne," Jennifer commanded smoothly. "Accept the hardware. Dismiss the President. Inform him his contribution to our facility’s ventilation protocol is highly appreciated."
"It will be executed exactly as ordered, Ms. Aniston. The perimeter will be cleared in sixty seconds."
The intercom clicked dead.
Jennifer turned around, leaning her back against the teakwood wall. She looked at Mariah and Monica. The three women were grinning, completely intoxicated by the sheer, unapologetic arrogance of the man sleeping on the sofa.
He hadn’t just broken the Hollywood establishment. He had reduced their most sacred, coveted idols into literal door wedges, and he had done it without ever putting on a pair of shoes.
"I think I need to frame this moment in my memory forever," Monica smiled, walking back toward the linen pit. "An entire organization of elite international journalists just begged a twenty-two-year-old to accept their highest honor, and he is going to use it to let fresh air into a dusty warehouse."
Alex finally shifted his weight, slowly pushing himself up into a seated position. He ran a hand through his messy hair, opening his dark eyes to look at the Harem Council.
"Prestige is entirely subjective, Monica. Utility is an objective, mathematical truth," Alex reasoned flawlessly. "A trophy sitting on a shelf collects dust. A trophy propping open a heavy steel door prevents hinge degradation. I am simply optimizing the asset."
He stood up, his bare feet padding softly across the white terrazzo. He bypassed the dining table and walked directly toward the chef’s kitchen.
"Now," the Slacker King announced, opening the heavy glass door of the Sub-Zero refrigerator. "The administrative anomaly has been successfully neutralized without requiring my physical presence at the gate. I believe this victory warrants immediate caloric compensation."
He pulled out a massive, pre-prepared thermal container that Platinum Concierge had delivered earlier that morning.
"Julian successfully procured authentic, imported Japanese Hokkaido milk bread, paired with a reserve batch of Madagascar vanilla bean butter," Alex dictated, setting the container on the granite island. "I am going to consume a terrifying amount of carbohydrates, and then I am going to return to the megalith and actively refuse to acknowledge the existence of the cinematic sector for the rest of the week."
Jennifer, Mariah, and Monica didn’t argue. They practically glided toward the kitchen island, perfectly content to feast on imported luxury and watch the outside world burn itself to the ground, safe and eternally rested behind the impenetrable walls of the Slacker King’s empire.
