Chapter 183: The Double Extortion
Trousdale Estates, Los Angeles. Thursday, 7:15 PM PST.
The biological phenomenon of experiencing absolute, unadulterated peace for the first time in half a decade is a physically staggering event.
For Courteney Cox, the transition from the blistering, high-voltage terror of Soundstage 24 to the hyperbaric silence of the Trousdale fortress was equivalent to stepping off a speeding freight train onto a cloud. She lay completely flat on her back in the eastern quadrant of the fourteen-by-fourteen-foot espresso-colored linen megalith. She was still wearing her tailored studio wardrobe, but her bare feet were buried deep in the down-stuffed cushions.
Her chest rose and fell in a slow, shuddering rhythm as the [The Sovereign’s Embrace: Level 2] trait aggressively purged the toxic, accumulated cortisol from her bloodstream. The phantom knots in her shoulders, which she had carried for three seasons of network television, literally melted away into the Italian linen.
"I can’t feel my pager vibrating," Courteney whispered, her voice sounding incredibly small, yet profoundly safe, in the deadened acoustics of the vast living room. "My agent... the director... they aren’t screaming."
"Screaming is an admission of logistical failure, Court," a deep, rich baritone rumbled from the geometric center of the cushion pit.
Alex Turner did not open his dark, obsidian eyes. His hands remained comfortably laced over his stomach. The [Biological Endurance: Level 3 - The Immortal Sloth] trait kept his heart rate locked at a meditative fifty beats per minute, entirely unbothered by the fact that he had just casually absorbed a second primary cast member of the world’s most profitable sitcom into his shadow syndicate.
"The executives scream because they realize their entire multi-billion-dollar infrastructure relies entirely on whether or not you decide to stand on a piece of taped floor," Alex lectured smoothly, his voice acting as a hypnotic anchor. "By removing yourself from the floor, you have successfully reminded them of their own irrelevance. It is a highly therapeutic exercise."
Jennifer Aniston, curled up against Alex’s left side, let out a bright, airy giggle. She reached over and gently patted Courteney’s arm.
"Welcome to the quarantine, Court," Jennifer smiled radiantly. "The air is significantly better up here."
Mariah Carey, sitting cross-legged near the northern edge of the megalith, looked up from her international syndication ledgers. The Queen of Pop had fully transitioned into her role as a senior administrator of the Harem Council. She looked at the newest refugee with a knowing, fiercely protective gaze.
"You don’t have to go back until you are perfectly rested," Mariah promised. "And when you do go back, you will go back as an owner, not an employee."
Suddenly, the heavy Motorola brick phone, resting on the reclaimed teakwood coffee table just outside the perimeter of the sofas, erupted into its silent, red visual strobe alert.
Alex let out a long, heavy groan of profound spiritual suffering.
"The universe possesses a catastrophic inability to respect my evening decompression cycle," Alex complained blindly to the high, drywall ceiling.
Jennifer seamlessly executed her duties as the apex gatekeeper. She slid gracefully across the soft linen, plucked the heavy plastic device from the tray, extended the thick black antenna, and pressed it to her ear.
"Tyrant Group, Executive Office," Jennifer answered, her tone effortlessly shifting into a cool, impenetrable professional register.
"Ms. Aniston. Good evening," Richard Vance Jr.’s voice crackled through the receiver. The corporate attorney sounded impeccably sharp, though a distinct undertone of manic, high-stakes adrenaline laced his words. "I apologize for the intrusion, but I require Mr. Turner’s executive directive. I just received a panicked, highly erratic phone call from Gregory Hale."
Jennifer raised a perfectly sculpted eyebrow. She covered the mouthpiece, looking down at Alex.
"Alex. It’s Richard," Jennifer murmured. "Gregory Hale is panicking. He realizes Courteney is missing."
Alex didn’t sit up. He didn’t tense his heavily muscled, optimized shoulders. He simply let out a low, melodic hum of pure, predatory amusement.
"Put him on speaker, Jen," Alex drawled lazily. "I want to hear the exact frequency of the network’s despair."
Jennifer pressed the speakerphone button and set the heavy device on the cushion next to Alex’s head.
"Speak, Richard," Alex commanded smoothly. "And please inform me that the President of Network Broadcasting is currently experiencing a severe, localized neurological event."
"He is functionally catatonic, Mr. Turner," Richard chuckled, a dark, incredibly satisfied sound that echoed in the quiet room. "Gregory Hale called my direct line three minutes ago. He stated that Ms. Cox walked off the set at exactly 6:00 PM alongside Ms. Aniston, climbed into an unmarked, armored Vanguard vehicle, and vanished into the Hollywood Hills."
"An accurate assessment of the timeline," Alex noted.
"Sir, Gregory is terrified," Richard continued, the awe bleeding heavily into his tone. "He assumes that Tyrant Group LLC is actively executing a hostile, unilateral takeover of his entire primary cast. He is begging to know what your demands are to return his actresses to the studio lot."
Courteney stiffened slightly on the cushions, her ingrained industry paranoia momentarily fighting against the aura. "He’s going to fire me. He thinks I breached my contract."
"He isn’t going to fire you, Court," Alex corrected gently, his dark eyes finally opening to look at the ceiling. "He is going to pay you."
Alex turned his head slightly toward the speakerphone.
"Richard," Alex dictated, his voice dropping into a register of icy, absolute corporate sovereignty. "You will draft a secondary representation contract. Tyrant Group LLC officially assumes the exclusive management and negotiation rights for Courteney Cox."
"Understood, Mr. CEO. And the terms of the network ransom?"
"We are duplicating the Aniston Clause," Alex stated flawlessly, his [Business Management: Level Max] trait parsing the catastrophic financial blow he was about to deliver to Warner Bros. "Ms. Cox’s operational window is strictly locked from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM. No mandatory press junkets. No weekend reshoots. And she is immediately granted a two-percent backend participation point on all gross syndication revenue, retroactive to the pilot episode."
There was a profound, suffocating silence on the other end of the line.
"Mr. Turner..." Richard whispered, his Ivy League brain struggling to compute the sheer, unadulterated extortion. "You are demanding four percent of the network’s total gross syndication revenue across two actors. Sir, that is hundreds of millions of dollars in passive capital. Gregory Hale will have to justify this to the Time Warner board of directors. It is mathematically crippling."
"Gregory’s ability to justify his failures to his board is not my concern, Richard," Alex reasoned lazily, crossing his arms behind his head. "He can either surrender the four percent, or he can explain to his shareholders why his flagship, billion-dollar Thursday night comedy block permanently ceased production because his two lead actresses decided to take an indefinite vacation in my living room."
A sharp, breathless laugh escaped Richard’s throat. It was the laugh of an apex legal predator who had just been handed the ultimate, unbeatable hand of cards.
"It is a flawless, lethal guillotine, sir," Richard praised reverently. "By holding them both, you have completely neutralized any leverage the studio had to divide and conquer the cast. I will draft the demands and fax them to Gregory Hale’s private residence immediately."
"Ensure you include a penalty clause for the interruption of my evening, Richard. Add an additional fifty thousand dollars to their respective episodic quotes," Alex commanded smoothly. "Have a restful night."
"Absolute destruction confirmed, Mr. Turner. Goodnight."
Jennifer reached over and hit the end button, collapsing the antenna.
The silence inside the mid-century fortress rushed back in, heavy and absolute.
Courteney Cox stared at the ceiling, her mouth slightly open. Her brain was violently recalculating her entire existence. In less than ten minutes, while lying on a couch, the young man in the sweatpants had fundamentally rewritten her reality, securing her generational wealth and absolute creative freedom.
"You just robbed Warner Bros. blind," Courteney whispered, her voice trembling with a mixture of sheer terror and profound, intoxicating liberation. "You just stole tens of millions of dollars from them, and you didn’t even raise your voice."
"I am simply correcting an archaic labor imbalance, Courteney," Alex smiled, a slow, predatory smirk that completely belied his relaxed posture. "The network has been exploiting your exhaustion to line their own pockets. I am exploiting their panic to line yours. It is a highly equitable redistribution of wealth."
[DING!]
The ethereal, crystal-clear chime of the Superstar & Champion System echoed in his cerebral cortex, vibrating with a tone of ultimate validation.
The translucent blue interface materialized seamlessly in the darkness of his vision.
[System Milestone Achieved: The Sitcom Syndicate.]
[Description: The Host has successfully executed a dual-target, high-leverage corporate extortion maneuver against a Tier-1 Television Network. By monopolizing the primary assets of a flagship franchise, the Host has established absolute, undeniable operational dominance over the broadcast sector.]
[Reward: +40 System Points (SP). Target Loyalty (Courteney Cox): 85/100 (Unshakeable Allegiance).] [Current SP: 1290.]
Alex dismissed the glowing blue text with a lazy mental flick.
He didn’t need the system to validate the maneuver. The physical reality of his empire was undeniably perfect. The gold was secured in the subterranean vault. The major record labels were currently functioning as his uncompensated logistics divisions. And now, the television networks were actively bleeding capital directly into the offshore holding accounts of his inner circle.
"Now," the Slacker King announced softly to the room, pushing himself up from the down-filled cushions. "The administrative crisis has been entirely outsourced. The network is officially bleeding out. I believe this level of stress warrants immediate, aggressive caloric compensation."
He looked at Jennifer. "Gatekeeper. Has Platinum Concierge delivered the evening payload?"
Jennifer giggled, slipping gracefully out of the linen pit and padding barefoot toward the kitchen.
"Julian dropped the thermal bags at the Vanguard checkpoint twenty minutes ago, Alex," Jennifer confirmed, retrieving the massive, heavy insulated containers from the granite island.
She carried them back to the reclaimed teakwood coffee table, unzipping the heavy canvas. The rich, intoxicating aroma of authentic, imported Italian cuisine instantly flooded the air-conditioned space.
Julian had sourced an absolute masterpiece of comfort food. There were massive, steaming porcelain bowls of handmade pappardelle pasta coated in a rich, slow-simmered wild boar ragù. Flanking the pasta were platters of heavily toasted, garlic-rubbed crostini, massive spheres of fresh, weeping burrata cheese imported directly from Puglia, and two sweating bottles of vintage Barolo wine.
"Oh my god," Courteney breathed, her eyes widening as she pulled herself up into a seated position. The punishing, carb-starved diets mandated by the studio wardrobe department were instantly forgotten. "This is... this is spectacular."
"Carbohydrates are the foundation of a stable nervous system, Court," Alex lectured smoothly, taking a massive bowl of the wild boar ragù and sitting back into the deep cushions. "Eat the pasta. Your body requires the dense caloric load to repair the damage inflicted by fluorescent studio lighting."
The Harem Council eagerly dug into the feast.
The silence that fell over the megalith was not the tense, awkward silence of a corporate dinner party. It was the heavy, satiated silence of pure, unadulterated culinary euphoria. The pasta was flawless, the meat melting instantly on their tongues. Alex’s optimized metabolism instantly torched the heavy fats, converting them directly into raw kinetic energy without storing a single ounce of adipose tissue.
Monica Bellucci took a slow sip of the Barolo wine, her dark eyes reflecting the dim, ambient lighting of the living room.
"You know, Alex," Monica murmured, her rich Italian accent wrapping around the syllables. "Harvey Weinstein is currently attempting to rally the independent film financiers against you. And Warner Bros. is likely drafting emergency shareholder reports. The entire industry is coordinating against Tyrant Group."
Alex didn’t stop chewing. He swallowed, picked up his glass of sparkling water, and looked at the European icon with an expression of profound, spiritual boredom.
"Let them coordinate, Monica," Alex drawled lazily, resting his elbows on his knees. "Coordination requires meetings. Meetings require conference calls, powerpoint presentations, and international flights. They are going to spend millions of dollars and thousands of hours actively exhausting themselves."
He took a slow sip of his water, the [Aura of Tranquility] hardening into an impenetrable wall of sovereign peace.
"While they are burning themselves to the ground trying to figure out how to breach the perimeter," Alex continued, his deep voice carrying the absolute, uncompromising weight of the Slacker King, "we are going to finish this pasta, close the drapes, and actively ignore them until Monday morning."
Alex leaned back into the buttery black leather, closing his obsidian eyes.
"The velvet quarantine is officially in effect. Do not wake me up."
