Chapter 430: Pneumatic Romance
The world outside would continue to adapt to his absolute laziness, and he was entirely content to float above it all, perfectly untouched.
For the next three hours, the ultrasonic levitation field maintained a state of unyielding, zero-gravity perfection beneath the espresso linen megalith. The low-frequency acoustic hum operated as a continuous, cellular-level massage, lulling the Harem Council into a state of profound, chemically pure relaxation.
However, the human mind, even when completely shielded from the crushing gravity of the working class, occasionally craves a narrative.
Jennifer Aniston, who had successfully hijacked the administrative access to Vanguard’s ’Ghost Render’ artificial intelligence earlier that afternoon, was currently lying on her stomach, her legs kicking lazily in the air as she stared at the encrypted tablet.
"The sports sector is completely pacified," Jennifer announced softly, her fingers grazing the glass screen with the absolute minimum kinetic force required. "And the procedural dramas have been reduced to televised naps. But there is an entire genre of Hollywood cinema we haven’t ethically corrected yet, Alex."
Alex did not open his obsidian eyes. He remained perfectly centered in the floating pit, his breathing a slow, hypnotic metronome. "If the genre involves running, shouting, or emotional friction, Jen, it is mathematically obsolete. Do not force the machine to render sweat."
"It’s the romantic comedy, Alex," Courteney Cox chimed in, shifting her weight effortlessly across the frictionless cashmere to peer over Jennifer’s shoulder. "The entire nineties box office is built on them. And they are incredibly exhausting."
Gillian Anderson let out a husky, deeply cynical laugh, her head resting on Alex’s left bicep. "She’s right. The traditional rom-com climax is a biological nightmare. The male lead realizes he made a mistake, so he has to sprint through a crowded airport terminal, jump over a luggage carousel, and beg the woman to stay while breathing heavily under fluorescent lights. It’s an endocrine tragedy."
"Running through an airport implies a failure of initial communication," Alex drawled lazily, a faint smirk pulling at the corners of his mouth. "If you must sprint to secure a relationship, the relationship is aerodynamically flawed."
Angelina Jolie, her dark eyes shining with mischievous, shameless amusement, propped herself up on her elbows. "Prove it, Mr. CEO. Jen, use the voice-dictation on the algorithm. Give the supercomputer a standard rom-com prompt, but assign Alex as the male lead. Let’s see how the machine calculates his romantic friction."
Mariah Carey and Monica Bellucci instantly sat up, exchanging delighted, conspiratorial glances.
"Oh, this is going to be a disaster," Mariah giggled, clapping her hands softly. "The machine is going to crash trying to figure out how to make him chase a girl without standing up."
Jennifer grinned, tapping the microphone icon on the tablet.
"Prompt," Jennifer dictated clearly into the device, her voice echoing perfectly in the quiet, climate-controlled air. "Generate a standard, ninety-minute romantic comedy. The male lead is a photorealistic avatar of Alex Turner. The female lead is angry and is currently boarding a commercial flight to Paris at LAX to leave him forever. Alex must stop her. Render in high-definition and broadcast to the primary monitor."
She tapped the execution key.
The massive, sixty-inch Pioneer rear-projection monitor anchoring the patio flickered to life. The soothing, ambient blue twilight of the screen faded into a flawless, photorealistic establishing shot of the Los Angeles International Airport.
On the screen, a digital, highly stylized female actress was weeping softly near a departure gate, clutching a boarding pass. The camera zoomed in on her face, capturing the manufactured heartbreak designed to manipulate the viewer’s tear ducts.
The scene cut to the digital avatar of Alex Turner.
The living room erupted into immediate, breathless laughter. The digital Alex was not wearing a tuxedo or a stylish trench coat. He was wearing his exact, unbranded charcoal Loro Piana sweatpants. He was lying entirely flat on his back on a digital replica of the espresso linen sofa.
"I have to go to him," the digital woman sobbed on the screen, looking longingly out the airport window. "But he didn’t even chase me. He didn’t even run to the gate."
The camera cut back to the digital Alex. He let out a slow, deeply suffering sigh. He didn’t sit up. He simply reached out and picked up a heavy Motorola brick phone.
"Richard," the digital Alex murmured, his voice modulated to a flawless, ASMR-level baritone that sent shivers down the actual Jennifer Aniston’s spine. "A commercial airport relies on a punitive logistical loop. It forces human beings to stand in lines and endure the friction of security checkpoints. It is an ergonomic nightmare."
"What are your terms, sir?" the synthesized voice of Richard Vance Jr. replied over the speakerphone.
"Purchase the airport," the digital Alex commanded softly, staring blankly at his digital ceiling. "Execute a hostile buyout of the Los Angeles World Airports authority. Once the ink dries, you will issue a non-negotiable architectural mandate. Cancel all departing flights. Extinguish the runway lights."
In the Trousdale living room, Angelina Jolie buried her face into Alex’s shoulder, her body shaking with silent, hysterical laughter. "Alex! You’re buying the airport so she can’t leave!"
"It is a highly efficient geographical intervention, Angie," Alex noted seamlessly, his real eyes still closed. "If the plane cannot legally take off, the narrative tension drops to zero."
On the monitor, the digital Alex was not finished.
"Furthermore," the avatar continued smoothly, "walking from the terminal back to the exit requires an unacceptable expenditure of caloric energy for the female lead. Instruct Vanguard engineering to install a pneumatic transit tube directly into Gate 4. Place her in a cashmere-lined capsule and utilize differential air pressure to deliver her directly to this living room."
The scene on the television abruptly cut back to the airport. The digital woman was suddenly, gently sucked into a sleek, transparent polycarbonate tube. She traveled silently across the city of Los Angeles at high velocity, completely unbothered by traffic.
With a soft, pneumatic hiss, the tube deposited her directly onto the espresso linen sofa, right next to the digital Alex.
He didn’t move to embrace her. He simply looked at her with lazy, apex-predator clarity.
"Your flight was an aesthetic tragedy," the digital Alex whispered to her. "Please refrain from booking commercial transit in the future. It creates visual pollution in my airspace."
The screen faded to black. The entire ninety-minute rom-com had been mathematically resolved in exactly two minutes and fourteen seconds.
The Harem Council completely lost their composure.
Monica Bellucci threw her head back, letting out a rich, throaty laugh that echoed across the floating megalith. "It is the most aggressively Italian romantic gesture I have ever witnessed," she purred, wiping a tear of amusement from her eye. "Possessive, overwhelmingly dominant, and yet... it required absolutely no sweating. You didn’t even offer her a glass of water when she arrived."
"Hydration requires lifting a glass, Monica. She had just survived a pneumatic tube ride; I assumed she needed to rest," Alex defended his avatar flawlessly. "And frankly, the machine captured my operational ethos perfectly. Why sprint through a crowded terminal like a peasant when you can simply apply infinite liquidity to the Federal Aviation Administration?"
"It’s shameless," Gillian grinned, shaking her head. "You just ruined the plot of every Meg Ryan movie ever made. Women are going to watch this and realize that if a man truly loves them, he won’t stand outside their window with a boombox. He’ll just buy the mortgage to their house and legally forbid them from leaving."
"A boombox is a high-decibel auditory assault, Gillian," Alex replied smoothly. "A true gentleman ensures absolute acoustic silence."
Nearby, hovering roughly three feet off the terrazzo floor on his magnetic levitation cushion, Snoop Dogg was nodding in profound, philosophical agreement. He was lazily steering his cushion in slow, concentric circles around the zero-edge pool.
"The King is right, ladies," Snoop drawled, a thin, fragrant cloud of smoke trailing behind him. "Chasing someone implies they are running away. If you own the ground they are running on, there is no chase. It’s checkmate, nephew. Pure, unadulterated checkmate."
Keanu Reeves, floating upside down on his own cushion, simply smiled. "The pneumatic delivery system was a beautiful touch of empathy, Alex. You saved her from the LAX baggage claim. That is true romance."
Before the Brotherhood could further dissect the sheer, sociopathic romance of the ’Ghost Render’ algorithm, the heavy Motorola brick phone on the teakwood tray emitted its silent, red visual strobe alert.
"The external universe is relentlessly needy," Alex sighed, his head lolling lazily to the side. "Jen. Handle the noise."
Jennifer, laughing, snatched the phone and pressed it to her ear. "Tyrant Group."
She paused. Her eyes widened, and she immediately hit the speakerphone button, tossing the device onto the cushions.
"Make it brief, Richard," Alex commanded softly. "The Council is currently debating the aerodynamic properties of pneumatic romance, and I do not wish to be interrupted by a corporate ledger."
"I apologize for the intrusion, Mr. Turner, but the punchline is simply too historic," Richard Vance Jr. chuckled, the sound thick with dark, Ivy League ecstasy. "Jennifer’s broadcast command for the AI-generated film bypassed our internal servers. ’The Pneumatic Romance’ just aired live on the Hallmark Channel."
The living room fell into a stunned, delighted silence.
"Did the network executives experience localized, existential panic over the lack of a kissing scene in the rain?" Alex asked smoothly.
"They are functionally catatonic, sir," Richard laughed. "But the consumer response is catastrophic for the industry. The switchboards at 1-800-FLOWERS and every major diamond retailer are completely dead. The female demographic has universally decided that traditional romantic gestures are a sign of working-class desperation. They don’t want bouquets anymore, Mr. Turner. They want their husbands to purchase their local municipalities."
"Let them rewrite the standard of affection," Alex smiled lazily. "A purchased municipality is far more durable than a dozen roses. Unplug your switchboard, Richard. I am officially returning to my stasis protocol."
"Absolute radio silence confirmed, Mr. CEO. Have a flawless Sunday."
The line clicked dead.
Jennifer tossed the phone away, laughing helplessly. The corporate world was actively cannibalizing its own romantic tropes, television networks were broadcasting lazy checkmates, and the global standard for love had been permanently, financially inflated.
Alex shifted his weight slightly on the floating megalith. Because the entire sofa was suspended on the acoustic levitation field, the movement required zero kinetic resistance. Angelina and Gillian slid effortlessly against his sides, their cashmere garments generating absolutely no friction.
He pulled them closer, the ambient white noise of the climate control washing over him. The perimeter was secure. The rom-com industry had been pacified. He let his eyelids flutter shut, sinking perfectly into the ultrasonic hum of the espresso linen. The world outside would continue to adapt to his absolute laziness, and he was entirely content to float above it all, perfectly untouched.
