Blood Queen Reborn

Chapter 188: Building Styles

The sight of the corpses was a startling one for the three of them, not because they weren’t starting to get used to them, but because it made them realize that they were all lucky. Vorden and Layla were able to survive because they both were capable of regenerating their limbs, and even Quinn was caught midair to avoid a fatal injury.

It led to the question of if their friends made it. There was a chance that Fex was able to survive due to him being a vampire, but the same couldn’t be said for Peter.

"Surely we’re not the only ones who survived right?" Layla cautiously asked.

The question was left hanging in the air. Although they didn’t know if the two were swallowed, so there was a hope that neither of them ended up in the caves with them.

"... This is a dangerous planet," Quinn commented.

Layla walked up to one of the corpses, and knelt down to their feet, bow slung over her shoulders.

"What are you doing?!" Vorden shouted.

"I don’t want to do this either, but I need to eat as many kinds of undead flesh as possible," Layla replied, then added, "Please don’t think less of me for this."

"Let’s just give her some privacy," Quinn said, and the two turned around.

Behind them, they could hear the sounds of Layla consuming, although it seemed like she was trying to chew slowly, as if to make quieter sounds.

"You know, it might be a bad thing if Layla were to evolve into her second subclass right about now," The system explained.

’What do you mean?’

"There is a chance, albeit a slim one, that Layla could evolve into a dangerous subclass, one that loses all of its memories and becomes a monster."

’And you didn’t think that would be important information to know sooner?’ Quinn questioned it.

He was continuing to realize just why exactly Erin had random bursts of anger. How could she not when there was a system voice purposely withholding crucial information from them?

"Well, now that I’m telling you this, that chance might’ve increased as she hadn’t eaten a lot of unique pieces of flesh so soon," the system said, "If only she needed to eat flesh once per day, that would’ve ensured she became a powerful subclass."

’...You really are a troublesome system,’ Quinn muttered in his mind.

"You two wanted me to give you more information, so I’m giving you more information."

Quinn silently groaned.

[4/7 unique humans eaten]

"Hey," Quinn turned to Vorden, "You promise not to tell anyone about Layla, right?"

Vorden smiled, "I don’t even know what you’re talking about," then winked.

Back with Logan and Fex, they were traveling towards the direction of the thing Logan took an interest with. As a way to get a better view of the massive cave system, Logan had diverted several of his spiders to travel the tunnels, and scan everything they saw to get recorded to his suit. Because of this, he knew exactly which direction to go.

"Hey, so what exactly is it we’re heading to?" Fex asked.

"I didn’t think you would be interested," Logan replied, "I have detected an anomaly deep within the depths of this cave system. There appears to be something massive, and vast, that requires my attention."

"I see."

’Alright so he’s not thinking about our watches, good. I think I’m in the clear,’ Fex thought.

They continued walking, Fex behind him as he was producing string. He hadn’t given up hope that his friends would come across it. Just in case.

"Hmm, interesting," Logan hummed.

Fex raised an eyebrow, "Why what’s—?"

He paused, and stared at the massive cavern in front of him, although describing it as a cavern was perhaps not the right word. What he had seen was clearly made by hand, sculpted out of a black stone in an expert manner.

"We’re here," Logan stated, then turned to Fex, "Alright, you can close your mouth now."

Fex hadn’t even noticed, but closed his previously dropped jaw.

The thing that had brought Fex for a loop was the town in front of him, vast structures and buildings of all kinds. Stores, houses, infrastructure, and more. It could clearly support a thousand people, and the ceiling was large enough for a personal plane to comfortably fly around.

Towards the center of the strange town was a round, tower-like structure, but despite its impressive height, could not reach the even taller ceiling.

Fex stared, "Hey, can you see what I’m seeing right now? I’m not seeing things, right?"

"Indeed it is," Logan replied, "It is in fact a—"

’—Vampire settlement,’ Fex thought.

"—Dalki settlement," Logan said out loud.

If the sight of the town had thrown Fex for a loop before, he was now in an even worse one. In his heart and mind, what he was seeing was most definitely the familiar feeling of home. The very same deep black stone that he had grown up seeing everywhere. The only notable difference was the type of construction style, but even back home, not all buildings were stylized the same way.

As for Logan, he had extensive records of dalki settlements memorized, the likes of which had also used the deep rich black stones. It was a strange durable material that none of the human scientists figured out, so they kept to using galathrium. Although Logan’s intelligence was impressive, even the average human would recognize this as a dalki settlement.

’Dalki settlement? I’m not going crazy, right?’ Fex repeated the thought.

Either way, he kept his mouth shut.

"This is quite the important discovery," Logan noted, "An orange portal planet such as this one having an old abandoned settlement likely means the dalki wanted some sort of resource from this planet, although, it is strange there appears to not be a single sign of living dalki around. Judging from my spiders’ scanners, this is an old abandoned settlement, which leads to the question of why they left."

As far as Fex could hear, he noticed that Logan was right, there really weren’t any other living beings, and from the windows, he saw they were empty, devoid of furniture. It led to Fex having the same question as well.

The more he thought about it, the more he felt like his brain was getting fried. It made him want to just tell Logan the truth about vampires so they could figure it out together.

’I don’t get it, if he thinks this is a dalki settlement, but this looks like a vampire one, then what’s that supposed to mean? I mean, it’s underground, so maybe vampires really did live here?’ Fex thought, scratching his head, ’Are the two linked? But I barely even heard of the dalki before I got here, why would they build like us?’
