Bang!

Two pillars of flame erupted from the entrance tunnel.

Arnold Schwarzenegger strode onto the stage, but to everyone's surprise, he wasn't cosplaying Guile this time. His signature blond flattop was still there, but instead of Guile's absurd hairstyle, it had been trimmed to a far more normal length. Two streaks of dark blue face paint ran across his cheeks, his expression stern and focused.

As the spotlight fully illuminated him, the audience finally got a clear look at the outfit stretched tightly over his massive frame. A silver-gray metal shoulder pad sat on his right shoulder, though no one could quite tell what purpose it served.

"We can see that Arnold has changed up his look today," Vivian's voice rang out through the speakers as she explained the costume to the crowd.

"He looks just like Brian Battler, who will be appearing in the new title!"

"Brian Battler! Star player of the NFL's Dallas Cowboys!"

"Will he become the backbone of the American Sports Team and lead them to victory in the KOF Tournament? Let's find out together!"

Beside Vivian, Ethan glanced at Arnold's surprisingly fitting appearance and clicked his tongue.

What a shame.

Nikaido Benimaru's towering blond hair would have been perfect for further reinforcing the Guile image Arnold had spent so long building.

Unfortunately, Benimaru was supposed to be a lean rich playboy. The character simply didn't match Arnold's imposing physique.

In the audience, John was practically beating Mike's shoulder raw with excitement.

"M-M-Mike! Look! It's Schwarzenegger! The real Arnold Schwarzenegger!"

John had watched every movie and played every game featuring his idol. But seeing him in person was an entirely different experience.

"Dude, I can see him. Stop hitting me..." Mike winced, feeling his shoulder on the verge of dislocation. "Maybe you'll even get an autograph after the show. GAMENOVA gave you an all access pass, didn't they?"

He glanced at the special ticket John was clutching. Unlike everyone else's, it had been personally gifted by GAMENOVA. Honestly, Mike was a little jealous.

"When I find the legendary Pokémon No.151, I'll get treatment like that too."

Arnold waved to the crowd and struck a classic football charging pose before taking his position on one side of the ring.

"And his opponent…"

Ethan's voice echoed through the arena, immediately drawing everyone's attention back. The lights obediently swung towards the opposite tunnel.

Who else could it be?

After spending so much effort building up these two iconic media figures, GAMENOVA was obviously going to use them to the fullest.

"A dragon in motion, thunder in his fists, Brandon Lee!"

Brandon appeared at the far end of the entranceway. Unlike Arnold's serious demeanor, he wore a confident, almost provocative smile, continuously greeting the cheering audience around him.

He wasn't dressed as Fei Long, or Bruce Lee, this time either. Instead, he wore a blue vest over a white hoodie, paired with white athletic shorts.

"Let's see whether Sie Kensou can lead the Psycho Soldier Team to ultimate victory!"

As the announcement concluded, Brandon stepped onto the ring platform and faced Arnold directly. For fans deeply immersed in GAMENOVA culture, the sight was almost enough to send them into sensory overload.

"Looking at this atmosphere, it seems these two are finally settling things tonight."

Ethan joked, leaning forward slightly and raising his voice.

"Now then, let's welcome tonight's referee, Sam! Please verify that both competitors are ready!"

Sam hurried up onto the ring. After nervously checking and recalibrating both arcade machines one final time, he flashed an OK sign towards the commentary booth.

The screens immediately lit up. Moments later, the giant projector switched from the stage camera feed to the live gameplay display.

The broadcast screen split into three sections: Gameplay, player cameras, and commentary desk.

The gameplay naturally occupied the largest portion. The title screen flashed in sync with an energetic soundtrack.

THE KING OF FIGHTERS '86

There was no subtitle, no prefix. Just one giant title.

The King of Fighters '86.

"A spin-off? Wait... no."

John blinked.

He had originally assumed King of Fighters was merely a subtitle. Something like, Street Fighter: King of Fighters.

But this presentation made GAMENOVA's intentions crystal clear. This was being launched as an entirely new franchise. That left many fans confused.

Why?

Why create a brand-new IP when Street Fighter was already an established success? Wouldn't that just split their own audience? After all, both were fighting games. So, wouldn't it be easier to keep everything under one banner?

Meanwhile, Sam quickly verified the Hitbox settings attached to both cabinets before disappearing from view.

Arnold and Brandon exchanged glances. Though both men remained perfectly in character, neither was any less nervous than everyone else.

Just remembering the brutal training sessions from the previous week made their hands ache. An exhibition match wasn't nearly as easy as it looked.

Arnold acted first. Following the rules, he selected three members of the American Sports Team in succession. His opening fighter was Lucky Glauber.

"You can pick three characters at once?"

Both John and Mike immediately spotted the significance of the mechanic. In the Street Fighter they knew, nothing like this existed. Yet they had no trouble understanding the idea.

"This is basically Pokémon's consecutive battle system adapted into a fighting game."

It was obvious. When one fighter was defeated, the next teammate would enter the ring. Only after all three characters had fallen would the match truly end.

"Using that in a fighting game is genius."

Mike's eyes lit up. The mechanic introduced countless new possibilities. Even choosing your team composition became part of the battle itself.

Different characters had different strengths, weaknesses, and move sets. Naturally, some would counter others. The strategic depth was immediately apparent.

"Although..."

John, being more familiar with Street Fighter, quickly identified a potential issue.

"A normal match already takes a while. With this format, it could take five rounds or more before a winner is decided."

"If matches run too long, players might get tired, and spectators could get bored."

From his perspective, Street Fighter's traditional one on one format allowed competitors to focus entirely on pure execution. And while the team battle system sounded exciting in theory, it introduced a serious concern, no round reset.

If health, super meters, and other resources carried over between fighters, then even accumulated meter could be inherited. In that case, how exactly would balance be maintained?
