Building a Perfect Territory in the Mist
Chapter 65 - 59: Gathering, Experts AboundChapter 65: Chapter 59: Gathering, Experts Abound
At 8:30 in the morning, Shen Xing shot out of bed after receiving a call from the Anomaly Handling Bureau.
After a quick wash-up, he pushed his wheelchair out of his rented apartment.
The elevator reached the first floor.
The moment he came out, he saw a black van parked by the roadside, completely unmarked.
Standing beside it were several men and women in black suits with serious expressions.
Before he could get closer, a middle-aged man with a neat side part and a refined face strode up to greet him.
"Hello, Mr. Shen Xing. I’m the one who just contacted you by phone."
The middle-aged man smiled and professionally presented his credentials.
Shen Xing glanced at the ID, confirmed it was legitimate, and nodded.
"You two, come over and help Mr. Shen Xing into the van," the middle-aged man said, waving to those behind him.
A few of the suited agents stepped forward without a word and, working together, steadily lifted Shen Xing, wheelchair and all, into the van.
Then, the others filed into the vehicle as well.
CLANG.
The door shut, the engine started, and the van sped away from the old district.
Inside the van, Shen Xing sat with the other black-suited agents.
The middle-aged man sat across from him, his hands folded on his knees, his posture as proper as if he were attending a formal conference.
"Mr. Shen Xing, allow me to introduce myself. My surname is Yuan, and my name is Yuan An."
He extended a hand, his tone gentle and refined. "I am currently an Operator with the Anomaly Handling Bureau and the person in charge of this transport mission."
Shen Xing shook his hand. "Hello."
Seeing that he was easy to talk to, the middle-aged man, Yuan An, relaxed slightly. "For you to be selected by the higher-ups to participate in the Foggy Void Realm, Mr. Shen Xing, you must be one of the most outstanding Lords."
"And you’re so young, too. Your future is truly limitless."
Shen Xing glanced at him, thinking, ’This guy’s a pretty good judge of character.’
"Not at all. I’m only able to participate in this Void Realm because Captain Zhou Zheng helped me. It has little to do with me," he replied humbly.
"You’re being too modest," Yuan An said with a smile. "Even if Captain Zhou Zheng recommended you for the spot, you still need to have sufficient strength yourself. Otherwise, you wouldn’t have passed the higher-ups’ review."
After that, Yuan An continued to make idle small talk with Shen Xing, trying to find topics of conversation.
However, he mostly asked about personal matters, like Shen Xing’s family situation and relationship status.
It felt like a background check, which made him a little uncomfortable.
Yuan An seemed to notice his reaction and handed him a bottle of water. "Mr. Shen Xing, are you perhaps dissatisfied with our arrangements?"
"No, it’s just that I’m used to dealing with Zhou Zheng," Shen Xing said, shaking his head. "You all are so formal. I’m not quite used to it."
Yuan An was taken aback for a moment, then chuckled. "My apologies. Captain Zhou Zheng is indeed a bit unconventional, but he is quite capable."
Shen Xing nodded, bringing the awkward conversation to a close.
To be honest, even though Zhou Zheng was a bit of a slacker and didn’t seem very reliable, he still preferred dealing with him.
These guys in suits were too formal, and it made him subconsciously tense up.
In silence, the van slowly drove toward their destination: Bright Moon Bay Park.
The park was located in the northwestern suburbs of Jiang City. It was a relatively obscure wetland park that didn’t see many visitors on a typical day.
Ever since the Fog leak incident occurred there, the entire area had been sealed off.
The official story was that a minor geological subsidence had occurred inside the park, and a safety inspection was underway.
However, as the ’Foggy Void Realm’ continued to form, the Fog grew thicker and thicker, and the anomaly in that area could be seen from a great distance.
Many passersby uploaded videos to short-video sites or their Friends Circles, leading to a massive number of shares and a lot of attention.
The authorities quickly issued a notice explaining that due to continuous subsidence, some kind of toxic substance from underground had leaked, and they were dispatching Experts to investigate.
The notice was quite convincing, even including a few photos of personnel in hazmat suits collecting samples.
Honestly, if Shen Xing hadn’t encountered that "game," he would have actually believed it.
As he mulled over these random thoughts, they soon arrived near Bright Moon Bay Park.
Just as in the short videos, he could see a vast area shrouded in Fog from a distance.
Through the dense Fog, he could faintly make out the swaying silhouettes of trees, a few pieces of deserted park equipment, and extinguished streetlights.
The Fog stopped at the edge of the park, which was cordoned off with red warning tape.
BEEP BEEP—
The official vehicle honked its horn as it drove down the empty street, with starkly different scenes flashing past on either side of the windows.
To the right were rows of buildings and shops—the normal architecture of a modern city.
To the left, the Fog roiled and surged, as if stepping into it would mean entering another world.
A few minutes later, the official vehicle pulled into a parking lot near the park.
The lot had been cleared of all vehicles, and numerous container-like prefabricated buildings had been set up nearby, serving as a temporary base.
Before he even got out, Shen Xing spotted two familiar figures—a man and a woman—through the window.
The man was burly and wearing a shell jacket despite the hot weather, with a black sling bag so stuffed it was bulging, making him look like he was about to go on a hike.
The woman was slender, wearing a long-sleeved T-shirt with Hatsune Miku printed on it and a pair of skinny jeans, looking as though she was half-asleep.
It was none other than Qin Lang and Xu Jiayi.
When the van door opened and they saw Shen Xing being lifted out by the men in black, the two of them immediately hurried over.
"Hey guys, I can take it from here."
Qin Lang chuckled, skillfully taking the wheelchair from the agents’ hands and pushing Shen Xing forward.
"You two got here pretty early," Shen Xing said, turning his head.
"Ugh, don’t even get me started."
Qin Lang shook his head with a sigh. "I knew we were entering the Foggy Void Realm today, so I planned to get some rest early and build up my energy."
"But I was too damn nervous to sleep and ended up staying awake all night. So, I figured I’d just come over early."
"Jiayi lives nearby, so she got here early too."
Shen Xing smiled. "Did they say when we’re entering the Void Realm?"
Xu Jiayi replied from the side, "We need to go to the registration point first."
"Then at twelve noon, all the players will enter together."
Shen Xing nodded. ’They’re running this pretty officially,’ he thought.
As he pushed the wheelchair, Qin Lang said, "I took a look around just now. There are a lot of top players here. It looks like all the really badass players from the forums showed up."
"We should keep a low profile later. We don’t want to get targeted by these big shots and farmed like a walking EXP pack."
Shen Xing glanced around and could indeed sense many powerful auras.
A few of them even gave off an oppressive feeling of invincibility.
The three of them made their way to a prefabricated building on the west side of the parking lot.
They passed many other players along the way.
Like them, most players were in groups of two or three, though there were also quite a few lone wolves.
Some players noticed them, and their eyes widened in surprise upon seeing Shen Xing in his wheelchair before they quickly looked away.
Soon, they arrived at the registration point.
There were two or three players in line ahead of them, so they waited patiently.
After about ten minutes, it was their turn.
The person handling registration was a woman in uniform with a remarkable air about her.
She looked to be in her early thirties, with light makeup that gave her a poised and graceful appearance.
A nameplate on her desk read—Jiang Rong.
She looked up at them and smiled. "Please state your names, Lord Level, and the star-rank of your strongest Soldier Type."
The three of them exchanged a look, a flicker of hesitation in their eyes.
The woman named Jiang Rong saw through their thoughts and said with a faint smile, "Don’t worry, it’s just for a simple statistical survey."
"If you’re worried about exposing your strength, you can just give a rough estimate for everything but your name."
Hearing this, their worries eased somewhat.
Shen Xing went first. "Shen Xing, Level 6. Strongest Soldier Type is an Elite Three-Star Beastman."
Qin Lang reported next, "Qin Lang, Level 5. My Soldier Type is an Elite Three-Star Half-Elf."
"Xu Jiayi, Level 5. Soldier Type is an Elite Three-Star Stone Giant."
Jiang Rong’s ten fingers danced across the keyboard, rapidly recording their information.
"Not bad at all."
She offered a word of praise, then took out three diamond-shaped crystals that emanated a Blue light and placed them on the desk.
"These are your Void Realm Crystals. Please keep them safe."
The three of them looked down. The crystals were about as thick as a thumb, and each displayed a number: 45, 46, and 47.
"What are these?" Qin Lang asked, confused.
"Someone will explain them to you in a bit. Just take them for now."
Jiang Rong spoke in an unhurried manner, her magnetic voice seeming to carry a special kind of Magic Power that subconsciously calmed one’s mind.
The trio didn’t want to waste any more of her time, so they each picked a numbered crystal and put it in their pockets.
Shen Xing took number 45, Qin Lang took 46, and Xu Jiayi took 47.
Then, they went to a temporary waiting area behind the parking lot.
The area looked like what was once the park’s entrance. Through the hazy fog, they could vaguely see an ornate stone gate.
There were also some decorative stone statues nearby, but they had been stained black by the fog.
The three of them looked around. A good number of players had already gathered here.
Most of them were very aloof, standing in corners with their arms crossed, giving off a "keep your distance" vibe.
Of course, there were also some more active people striking up conversations with other players, seemingly trying to invite them to team up.
As mentioned before, players were allowed to form teams inside the Void Realm.
Furthermore, those qualified to participate in the Foggy Void Realm were the cream of the crop among Jiang City’s new players. They were all powerful, and by joining forces, they might be able to obtain even more resources inside.
A couple of players approached them, wanting to team up with their group of three.
However, when they saw Shen Xing in his wheelchair, they froze. Then, they shook their heads in regret and turned to leave.
"Hey! What’s their problem?!"
Qin Lang was instantly indignant and started forward to argue with them.
Shen Xing stopped him, saying calmly, "That’s a perfectly normal reaction."
"After all, the Foggy Void Realm isn’t just full of treasures. It’s also full of dangers."
"A single mistake could even get you killed, so of course, everyone wants to find more reliable teammates."
After a pause, he looked at the two of them. "You guys could go find other people to team up with, you know."
Qin Lang shot him a look and said dismissively, "Tch. Other people might not know you, but do you think I don’t?"
"If you dare to enter the Void Realm, you must be confident you can handle it. You would never take a risk otherwise."
"I’m sticking with you. I’m waiting for you to carry me!"
Xu Jiayi, her arms crossed, said coolly, "I don’t like dealing with strangers."
Shen Xing smiled and didn’t press the topic further.
Next, Qin Lang began to introduce some of the more notable players to the other two.
"See that woman over there? The one in jean shorts with legs for days."
He pointed to a woman who was over 180cm tall with tanned skin and a beautiful face. "Her name is Yu Feifei, nicknamed the ’Jaguar.’"
"Apparently, she has some kind of Special Ability. Her burst speed can hit 55 meters per second, with a top speed of over 200 kilometers per hour. And that data is from half a month ago."
"Combined with her dual blades, even some Elite Level Soldier Types are no match for her."
Next, he pointed to a young man on their right. "And that guy over there in the sunglasses, that’s Gu Feng. He’s the one who boasted on the forums that he’d take first place. Rumor has it he already has an Extraordinary Level Soldier Type."
"But don’t worry. We’re entering a One-Star Secret Realm this time, so you can’t summon Extraordinary Level Soldier Types inside."
Qin Lang then looked at a relatively short man not far away. "And the guy in the leather jacket, that’s Xiang Dong."
"He’s only 160cm tall and doesn’t look very threatening, but he’s a multi-time mixed martial arts champion."
"In the last two player-versus-player battles, he even tore his opponent’s Elite Soldier Type apart with his bare hands. The guy is terrifying!"
